2. COVER CONVENTIONS
I based my magazine cover off of the conventions of an elektro
magazine cover, therefore this focused on the normal music
magazine conventions, such as a masthead, cover lines, a main
image, headlines a price and a barcode. Due to my magazine
being based on the dance genre I feel that using the
conventions and the overall structure of another popular dance
music magazine to be useful as it will make my magazine more
relatable to the real life elektro covers.
I decided not to break the regular conventions that are used in
music magazine covers, as the audience may not understand
the layout and structure of the magazine if the common
conventions are not used or if they are dramatically changed.
3. COVER FORMS
My cover has followed the house style of my magazine it has been used
throughout the contents as well as the article. Using this technique will
further illustrate that my magazine will be favoured by the audience as it has
been consistent with its forms and conventions.
Colours: The colours that I have used throughout my magazine are the same I
have used black and white to show contrasting colours and I have used the red to
add some vibrance to the pages and to allow the cover and contents to seem
more appealing and inviting.
Images: I took the images myself in a photo-shoot and manipulated them in
photoshop to make them suitable and fitting for the cover of my magazine. My
image has also followed conventions by placing the image in the centre of the
cover.
Text: The different sizes of the text will also show the different levels of importance
for different elements of the magazine.
Fonts: For the fonts that I have used, I have chosen a wide variety of styles and
colours to make my magazine stand out from others.
4. CONTENTS
CONVENTIONS
The overall layout and structure of my contents page was heavily
based off of an NME page, (seen in the top right corner). I used
this as my inspiration for my contents as NME is one of the most
popular magazines on the market, so they now what the
audience is looking for and they must know how all the
conventions work and how to make them work well, therefore I
have tried to replicate their design and structure. Also it is
conventional for all or most contents pages to contain a variety of
images, page number tagged next to the focus of the article and
for it also to continue using the house style and colour scheme
that is first seen on the cover.
5. CONTENTS FORMS
The forms on my contents page allow my magazine to stand out from the
others and the forms will mean that my magazine will fit the conventions
found in a music magazine.
Colours: I have used the same colours for my contents that I used for my cover
this has allowed me to keep to the house style that I set.
Images: Once again I took my own images for my contents page using the studio
set up in school, I continued to use this as I felt I would get the best quality
photographs possible from using the studio already in school. Afer this I edited
them in photoshop to make them look the best they can be for my contents page.
Text: The text that I have used in my contents is directly in context with the
coverlines that I have on the cover. The font and size of the text has roughly
stayed the same between my cover and contents. The larger text I have used for
the name of the artist is still larger than the summary of the article this allows the
reader to know who the article is about as maybe their favourite artist is featured in
one and if not it will just be easier to see what is in each article piece. I have also
changed the colours of the artist or bands name to further differentiate it from the
small summary.
6. ARTICLE
CONVENTIONS
I wanted my article to contain a question and answer style of interview as I felt that
this was the easiest to read and follow and would be the most understandable out
of the different types and styles that I could choose from for my article piece. I
used a Q&A of Usher that was published by Vibe magazine for the framework of
my article. I have followed the main conventions of an article in a music magazine,
these being a headline, a main image, an article and pull quotes.
7. ARTICLE FORMS
Colours: The colours in my article are the same as the cover and contents so that
the article will continue in using the house style of my magazine. I did this so that it
would not become confusing for the audience and it will keep all the pages of the
magazine connected and more understandable.
Images: The image that I took for my article was once again from using the studio
in school, after I took the best quality picture I could I then put it into photoshop
and manipulated it to make slight improvements and to make it fit into the space
that I had previously left on my double page article spread for it.
Text: My main body of text has been separated into two columns to make it look
more representable and easier to read, also I have made the questions bold so the
reader can see where one question ends and another begins so it just makes it
easier to follow for the reader. The pull quote I used next to the image is another
factor that ultimately attracts readers as it is a small extract of the full article and it
gives a little away of what the story is so people will want to read more. The drop
cap that I used is to basically show the reader where the main body of text starts.
Finally I used the columns so that all my writing could fit onto one side of the
double page spread and then the image of the focus of the article can also take up
a whole half of the double page spread.
