3. Why Citation Matter
1. Quality of your Research
2. Key Performance Index (KPI) & H-index
3. University Ranking
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
6. Title & Keywords
vWatch your title length and punctuation
• The impact and influence of research papers can be adversely affected by
long titles, too many authors and poor punctuation (2016).
• Based on a review of more than 150,000 papers submitted to the UK’s
Research Excellence Framework (REF) database in 2014, it is found that
articles with more succinct (short) titles had higher citation counts, as did
those with fewer authors.
• The study also found that citations increased with the use of colons in the
title, but decreased with the use of question marks.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
7. Uses of colons
1. To introduce elements of a list.
• The study's population consisted of the following groups: students, faculty, and staff.
2. To elaborate on a statement.
• The research question was as follows: What are teachers’ perceptions of teaching to the
Common Core State Standards?
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
9. vAvoid mentioning a country in your title, abstract or keywords
• Papers with country names in the title, abstract or keywords
systematically receive fewer citations, and are published in journals
with lower impact factors compared to papers without country names
in the same fields.
• The result of an analysis of 456,710 publications published between
2004 and 2011, suggests that country-level studies may be less
appealing to the international community compared to broader studies
on the same subject (Scientometrics, 2017)
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
10. vCarefully choose your keywords
• Choose keywords that researchers in your field will be searching for
so that your paper will appear in a database search.
• Use your keywords and phrases in your title and repeatedly in your
abstract. Repeating keywords and phrases will increase the likelihood
your paper will be at the top of a search engine list, making it more
likely to be read.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
11. Name & Affiliation
vUse a consistent form of your name on all of your papers
• Using the same name on all of your papers will make it easier for others to find all of
your published work.
• Make sure that your information is correct. Check that your name and affiliation are
correct on the final proofs of your manuscript and check that the paper’s information
is accurate in database searches.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
12. Publish Review Articles
• Review articles are commonly used to provide a broad overview of a
particular topic by synthesizing the existing research in that area.
Because of this format, they are often among a journal’s most read and
highly cited articles.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
13. Consider Open Access
• Some studies have suggested that open access papers are cited more
often than articles that are only available to subscribers. One thing is
certain: open access content has the potential to reach a much wider
audience, and achieve greater impact.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
14. Present your work at conferences
• Although conference presentations are not cited by other others, this
will make your research more visible to the academic and research
communities.
• Conferences are great place for networking & collaboration.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
15. Use social media
• Provide links to your papers on social media and your university profile page.
vFacebook
vTwitter
vResearchGate
vAcademia
vLinkdin

16. Altmetrics … is a term to describe Web-based metrics for the
impact of scholarly material, with an emphasis on social media
outlets as sources of data” (Shema et al. 2014).
• IMPACT STORY
• Almetrics
• PlumX

17.
18.
19.
20. Actively promote your work
• Talk to other researchers about your paper, even ones not in your field,
and email copies of your paper to researchers who may be interested.
Create a blog or a website dedicated to your research and share it.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
21. Visual Abstract
• A Visual Abstract is a graphic summary of the information from the
abstract of an article that is meant to convey key findings in a brief
format. The Visual Abstract serves an adjunct to help readers quickly
find the content most relevant to them that they want to pursue further
and read.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
24. Video Abstract
• A Video Abstract is an accompanying feature for research articles that
should attract viewers to the scientific paper.
• The aim of the Video Abstract is to promote the highlights of your
study.
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
25. Publish Hot Topics
• This could be a standalone article for a regular issue, or a special
section, issue, or supplement which examines the theme in more
detail.
• Example: Covid-19
@AP_Dr_Hasanain_Ghazi_2020
26. Cite Previous work
• Only if it is relevant to current research
• Too much will be self –citation
