The document discusses whether logistics or supply chain management research is likely to have the greatest impact on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of humanitarian supply chains. It notes that both areas are important, as humanitarian operations require directing material and information flows. The value of research is highlighted in addressing challenges such as redundant operations, late deliveries, and incomplete information through improving coordination, developing decision models, and proposing simple logistics solutions.

Efficiency
• Efficient: no waste of resources
• Metric: logistics costs
• Effective: supply those in need
• Metric: demand coverage

Disasters occure everywhere in the world and there is no safe place anymore because of climate change and other reasons. Disasters from ….
Disasters affect millions of people and every year the number is increasing more and more. In this lecture we are looking into how we can help these people.
My journey in humanitarian supply chains was not straight forward. and this started from Bam …
More than 7m were affected and approx. 2000,000 people were in need of food items immediately. Several others in need of shelter, hygiene kits and etc. So this is were the supply chain and logistics comes in.
So there are some major needs and because of those needs some specific relief items have to be delivered into the hands of affected people timely.
- Such operations have also to be cost efficient because saved money could be used to help more people or use faster transportation, like helicopters. Just for your information Every round trip of helicopter would cost nearly 12000 USD while the same shipment on the ground would cost 400USD.

Logistics bottlenecks;
Information gaps;
communication issues;
Local market:
This is what researchers try to do for many years now We’ve got some results with some success and some of them without any application in the field. Why? (some avenues for future)
what we need to encourage the research on that topic vey well oriented on both sides logistics side and SC side in order to improve the practitioners life

Adapting from private sector: Monitoring chain of custody, using best practices for warehousing and transport
Contracting with private sector: warehousing and transport providers
Collaborating with private sector: end to end planning, budgeting, manufacturing, international freight, security
Stewardship; actors, sectors and functions: long term partnerships with service providers, private sector invests further, manager/expert on hold capacity to engage
