The Return on Investment of Professional Coaching
There has been a lot of discussion about the ROI of professional coaching. The
attention to ROI of coaching tackles this issue from a number of angles:
· Is there one?
· If there is, what is it?
· How do we measure it?
· When? And, How? is coaching best used?
And, lest you imagine this discussion only happens in the corporate context of
coaching, let me assure you that it is not the case!
The questions "Does coaching work?" And specifically, "Will it work for
me?" are ubiquitous among all people thinking about supporting themselves and the achievement
of their goals with coaching.
My own take on this is naturally that coaching works a great deal better than anything other
process, to achieve targeted personal growth.
I'm sure we all could agree that coaching is effective – or we wouldn't be coaches. Right?
However, the question of the ROI is not really for us. For others must see coaching as valuable in
order to invest in it! Coaching is expensive – and it should be. It is a very intensive 1:1 process
which requires a great deal of training, experience and commitment on the part of the coach. Much
research has been done to help organizations make decisions about their resource allocation in staff
development. It turns out that their research applies to professional coaching that is used for
personal ends just as well. Andrew Neitlich (Head, Center for Executive Coaching) has compiled
some good data on the return on investment in coaching (CLICK here for the article).
Here are some interesting statistics:
• The International Coach Federation has found an average return of $4.30 and $7.90 for every $1
invested in professional coaching (through a review of studies conducted by a wide variety of
organizations).
• ICF also found that training combined with coaching increases productivity by four times more
than training alone (which makes sense given that coaching works over time to reinforce the work of
training, and also given the research that almost 85% of most training content is lost after two
weeks).
• Fast Company Magazine did a survey and found that 92% of leaders being coached said that they
plan to use a coach again.
• Companies that provide coaching report benefits through improvements in:
– Productivity
– Quality
– Organizational strength
– Customer service and reduced customer complaints
– Retention, especially among those receiving coaching
– Cost reduction and bottom line profitability
Since many of our members are not organizational or executive coaches specifically, I want to point
out how these same results apply outside of the organization:
• Individuals that engage professional coaching experience improvements in:
– Personal productivity
– Improved time management
– Improved strength in relationships
– Improved ability to navigate conflict
– Greater commitment to life goals
– Improved relationship with money
Executive coaching receives much attention, hence its ROI is studied. However, just like the internet
was initially invented to improve communication and data resource management for the military, but
now is widely used for by more than 50% of the world's population – research on executive coaching
ROI applies for personal coaching as well. Further research data shows:
• Executives and leaders receiving coaching report these benefits:
– Improved working relationships with direct reports
– Improved working relationships with immediate supervisors
– Better teamwork
– Improved working relationships with peers
– Greater job satisfaction
– Reduction in conflicts
– Improved organizational commitment
– Stronger relationships with external customers

Passion is a concept that’s talked about a lot in the business, career, coaching
and leadership arenas – employee engagement, mission statements, finding a
calling. But passion is much bigger (and deeper) than what happens M-F 9-5.
It’s a life skill – a stance – that helps bring vitality to all our engagements: work
life, family life, school life, love life, creative life, social life, and spiritual life.
Passion is the impulse toward growth and aliveness, and not only helps awaken
us from the trances and torpors of daily life, but is a survival mechanism,
because our attachment to life depends on our interest in it.
This presentation is about what inspires passion and what defeats it, how we
lose it and how we get it back – both for ourselves and our clients. It’s not just
about finding a passion, but living passionately. Not just passion as a place we
get to, but a place we come from, whether in the arenas of creativity and self-
expression, service and spirituality, adventure and discovery, or relationship.

CREDENTIALING & CORE COMPETENCIES SIG
September 14, 2017
6:00 - 6:50pm
This SIG supports coaches who are navigating the process of
ICF Credentialing, with special focus on the key criteria that
ICF uses – the Core Competencies!
The Core Competencies/Credentialing SIG will have Dr.
Michael Marx as guest speaker on Thursday, September 14th
at 6:00 PM. The core competency is Ethics and Standards.
Dr. Marx will be sharing the common issues where coaches
sometimes violate the ICF Code of Ethics. Come with your
questions!
5. Dr. Marx holds an EdD degree, an MBA, and the PCC
credential. He is imminently qualified to speak on this
subject, as he leads the ICF Global Ethics Community of
Practice and sits on the Internal Review Board – the team
that reviews coaches who have been charged with an ethical
violation. Dr. Marx is the author of the book Ethics in Risk
Management for Christian Coaches.

6. ICF-CO Membership - Feedback
In the last month, the Board has reached out to you to get feedback on your experience
as an ICF-CO member. If you took the time to chat with a board member, THANK YOU!
We are continuing this effort because we want to have as many member conversations
as possible.
Here is a sampling of what we’ve learned so far...
What members like about our chapter:
• Annual conference
• Virtual presentations
• Monthly meetings, especially the longer presentations with Q&A
• CCEUs
• Warmth of membership
• Meeting other coaches
What is least liked about our chapter:
• Distance to monthly meetings
• Squeezing in short sessions before the longer session at the meetings
• Challenges around navigating the credentialing process and wanting more support
• Not enough networking with other coaches
Recommendations for the chapter:
• Make webinars free for members
• Add networking events for members to connect more deeply
• Give some attention to life coaching in the programming versus
focus on leadership, business and executive
• Include live coaching demonstrations
• Promote visibility and value of coaching in the area
• More emphasis on relationship building over technology
• New member orientation
If you have been contacted by a board member (and you should have)
and haven’t connected yet, please help make the conversation happen. Your voice is important!
Thanks again and enjoy your summer!
