What is geotechnical textiles?
• Textile products manufactured from
natural and man-made fibres, woven
and non-woven, used in geological
applications involving rock, soil, or
other natural elements in civil
engineering projects.
Functions
• Separation
• Reinforcement
• Filtration
• Drainage
• Protection
•Geotechnical textiles are used globally to
address dangers to infrastructure caused
by degradation and natural disasters.
GEOTECHNICAL TEXTILES
Benefits of Geotechnical
Textiles:
 Durability
 Initial Strength
 Ecologically Efficient
 Low Maintenance
 Customizable Fabric
Geotechnical textiles are incognito supporters of

Potential applications of
geotechnical textiles in NER
Topographic characteristics
of NER
• Floods and heavy rainfall
• Landslides and sinking
zones
• Road blocks
GEOTECHNICAL TEXTILES APPLICATIONS IN NER
Road constructed on both sides. 300
mtr stretch in between to connect
these sides is under heavy landslide
and no optimal solution is available
using conventional solution.
Landslide area
SITE IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH
•Heavy rain causes mud
slides in these regions
which restricts
commuting through these
roads.
•This is a very important
road connection as it
reduces travel distance
from Itanagar to
Guwahati by 50 kms.
•Very limited
conventional solutions
are available, but will
not stabilize the soil
conditions.
•An optimal solution may
be provided to these
conditions using
geotechnical textiles

SCHEMES ON TECHNICAL TEXTILES FOR NER
• SCHEME FOR PROMOTING USAGE OF GEOTEXTILES
IN NER
• SCHEME FOR PROMOTING USAGE OF
AGROTEXTILES IN NER.
SCHEMES FOR PROMOTING USAGE OF GEOTEXTILES
IN NER
• The Scheme was launched in March 2015.
• Aim is to promote usage of Geotechnical Textiles in the North
Eastern Region.
• The Scheme supports the incremental cost, if any, due to use of
Geotextiles for following areas:
• Road Construction,
• Slope Stabilisation
• Water Reservoirs
• Financial Outlay : Rs.427 Crore
• Duration : 05 Years ( 2014-15 to 2018-19)
• To demonstrate use of Geotechnical textiles as a modern
cost-effective technology in the development of
infrastructure in fragile geological conditions of NER
• To promote the use of geotechnical textiles material and
create a market for these products in the NER through
inducing demand side pull;
• Stimulate development of technical textile industry in the
NER
SCHEME OBJECTIVES
The scheme has two components:
• Component-I :Hard intervention (Rs374 Cr)
Under this component Incremental cost of the Pilot Stretches
of identified ongoing or new projects, due to application of
geotechnical textile solutions, will be reimbursed to the
State/Central Project Authorities;
• Component-II : Soft Interventions (Rs43 Cr)
Under this component activities such as site inspection and TEV
study, design solutions and DPR preparation, on site
monitoring and testing, specification formulation, training and
capacity building, awareness campaigns, market development
support, and evaluations studies etc will be funded directly by
the Central Govt. to the identified agencies;
• Administrative Cost of the Scheme: Rs 10 Cr
DETAILED SCHEME OUTLINE
1. Pilot Project identification : by Project Authority
2. Site inspection : by COE
3. DPR-1 of the pilot project :
• To be prepared by Project Authority based on traditional solution.
• Cost of DPR to be funded by Project Authority
4. DPR -2 of the pilot project :
• To be prepared on Geotechnical textiles-based solution by the agency nominated by
the Central Government (COE Geotech) with the participation Project Authority
• Cost of preparation of DPR will be funded by Central government
• DPR 2 would also include bid specifications for geotechnical textile material for
floating tender
SCHEME IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY
5. DPR 1 (traditional solution) will be compared with DPR 2
(technical textiles-based solution)
Following scenarios may emerge:
1) DPR 1 < DPR 2: Example, DPR 1(Rs 100) < DPR 2 (Rs 110). Rs 100 by State Govt; Rs 10
+ Technical support and soft interventions by Central Govt
2) DPR1 = DPR2: Cost borne entirely by Project Authority. Technical support and soft
interventions from Central Govt
3) DPR 1> DPR 2: Savings accrued to Project Authority. Technical support and soft
interventions from Central Govt
6. The Project Authorities may dovetail financing of their pilot
projects from any other source, including Central Plan
assistance, as per the original project. This scheme will support the
incremental costs of such pilot projects due to introduction of
geotechnical textile solutions over and above the original project
cost
SCHEME IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY
7. Tender for the pilot stretch with technical textiles solution will
be floated based on bid specifications in DPR 2 by Project
Authority with technical assistance from COE
8. Tender evaluation through a committee consisting of Project
Authority, with technical assistance from COE
9. Project commences with implementation guidelines based on
DPR 2

GEO TEXTILES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH EASTERN REGION

  • 1. GEO TEXTILES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH EASTERN REGION P.S.Barbora In-Charge, NERC Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association Guwahati
  • 2. What is geotechnical textiles? • Textile products manufactured from natural and man-made fibres, woven and non-woven, used in geological applications involving rock, soil, or other natural elements in civil engineering projects. Functions • Separation • Reinforcement • Filtration • Drainage • Protection •Geotechnical textiles are used globally to address dangers to infrastructure caused by degradation and natural disasters. GEOTECHNICAL TEXTILES Benefits of Geotechnical Textiles:  Durability  Initial Strength  Ecologically Efficient  Low Maintenance  Customizable Fabric
  • 3. Geotechnical textiles are incognito supporters of infrastructure… • Provide structural stability and safety to the structure • Multifunctional elements to improve the serviceability of infrastructure • Can help extend the maintenance intervals for infrastructure Service potential of over 120 years in structures EROSION CONTROL FILTRATION SEPARATION PACKAGI SEALINGREINFORCEME NT PROTECTIO N DRAINA Mitigation potential of geotechnical textiles BENEFITS OF GEOTECHNICAL TEXTILES
  • 4. • Road and railways • Reinforced slopes and walls • Landfills • Tunnelling • Reservoir Linings APPLICATION AREAS OF GEOTECHNICAL TEXTILES
  • 5. Road construction Slope and hill protection Water reservoir lining Potential applications of geotechnical textiles in NER Topographic characteristics of NER • Floods and heavy rainfall • Landslides and sinking zones • Road blocks GEOTECHNICAL TEXTILES APPLICATIONS IN NER
  • 6. Road constructed on both sides. 300 mtr stretch in between to connect these sides is under heavy landslide and no optimal solution is available using conventional solution. Landslide area SITE IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH
  • 7. •Heavy rain causes mud slides in these regions which restricts commuting through these roads. •This is a very important road connection as it reduces travel distance from Itanagar to Guwahati by 50 kms. •Very limited conventional solutions are available, but will not stabilize the soil conditions. •An optimal solution may be provided to these conditions using geotechnical textiles ANOTHER SITE IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH
  • 8. CONCEPT OF USE OF GEOGRID FOR SOIL REINFORCEMENT
  • 9. CONCEPT OF USE OF GEOGRID FOR SOIL REINFORCEMENT
  • 10. CONCEPT OF USE OF GEOGRID FOR SOIL REINFORCEMENT
  • 11. SCHEMES ON TECHNICAL TEXTILES FOR NER • SCHEME FOR PROMOTING USAGE OF GEOTEXTILES IN NER • SCHEME FOR PROMOTING USAGE OF AGROTEXTILES IN NER.
  • 12. SCHEMES FOR PROMOTING USAGE OF GEOTEXTILES IN NER • The Scheme was launched in March 2015. • Aim is to promote usage of Geotechnical Textiles in the North Eastern Region. • The Scheme supports the incremental cost, if any, due to use of Geotextiles for following areas: • Road Construction, • Slope Stabilisation • Water Reservoirs • Financial Outlay : Rs.427 Crore • Duration : 05 Years ( 2014-15 to 2018-19)
  • 13. • To demonstrate use of Geotechnical textiles as a modern cost-effective technology in the development of infrastructure in fragile geological conditions of NER • To promote the use of geotechnical textiles material and create a market for these products in the NER through inducing demand side pull; • Stimulate development of technical textile industry in the NER SCHEME OBJECTIVES
  • 14. The scheme has two components: • Component-I :Hard intervention (Rs374 Cr) Under this component Incremental cost of the Pilot Stretches of identified ongoing or new projects, due to application of geotechnical textile solutions, will be reimbursed to the State/Central Project Authorities; • Component-II : Soft Interventions (Rs43 Cr) Under this component activities such as site inspection and TEV study, design solutions and DPR preparation, on site monitoring and testing, specification formulation, training and capacity building, awareness campaigns, market development support, and evaluations studies etc will be funded directly by the Central Govt. to the identified agencies; • Administrative Cost of the Scheme: Rs 10 Cr DETAILED SCHEME OUTLINE
  • 15. 1. Pilot Project identification : by Project Authority 2. Site inspection : by COE 3. DPR-1 of the pilot project : • To be prepared by Project Authority based on traditional solution. • Cost of DPR to be funded by Project Authority 4. DPR -2 of the pilot project : • To be prepared on Geotechnical textiles-based solution by the agency nominated by the Central Government (COE Geotech) with the participation Project Authority • Cost of preparation of DPR will be funded by Central government • DPR 2 would also include bid specifications for geotechnical textile material for floating tender SCHEME IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY
  • 16. 5. DPR 1 (traditional solution) will be compared with DPR 2 (technical textiles-based solution) Following scenarios may emerge: 1) DPR 1 < DPR 2: Example, DPR 1(Rs 100) < DPR 2 (Rs 110). Rs 100 by State Govt; Rs 10 + Technical support and soft interventions by Central Govt 2) DPR1 = DPR2: Cost borne entirely by Project Authority. Technical support and soft interventions from Central Govt 3) DPR 1> DPR 2: Savings accrued to Project Authority. Technical support and soft interventions from Central Govt 6. The Project Authorities may dovetail financing of their pilot projects from any other source, including Central Plan assistance, as per the original project. This scheme will support the incremental costs of such pilot projects due to introduction of geotechnical textile solutions over and above the original project cost SCHEME IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY
  • 17. 7. Tender for the pilot stretch with technical textiles solution will be floated based on bid specifications in DPR 2 by Project Authority with technical assistance from COE 8. Tender evaluation through a committee consisting of Project Authority, with technical assistance from COE 9. Project commences with implementation guidelines based on DPR 2 SCHEME IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY
