Lessons Learnt & Tips
1.
Introduction
"An in-memory database is a database management system that primarily relies on main memory
for computer data storage".
SAP HANA is SAP AG’s implementation of in-memory database technology. Following are the
components related to SAP HANA
SAP HANA DB refers to the database technology itself,
SAP HANA Studio refers to the suite of tools provided by SAP for modeling,
SAP HANA Appliance refers to HANA DB as delivered on partner certified hardware as
an appliance. It also includes the modeling tools from HANA Studio as well replication and data
transformation tools to move data into HANA DB,
History: HANA is the synthesis of three separate products – TREX, P*Time and MaxDB.
TREX (Text Retrieval and Extraction) is a search engine and began in 1996 as a student project
at SAP in collaboration with DFKI. TREX became a standard component in SAP NetWeaver in
2000. In-memory attributes were added in 2002 and columnar data store was added in 2003,
both as ways to enhance performance
2.
In 2005 SAP acquired Menlo Park based Transact in Memory, Inc. With the acquisition
came P*Time, an in-memory light-weight online transaction processing (OLTP) RDBMS
technology with a row-based data store.
3.
MaxDB (formerly SAP DB), a 2003 collaboration between MySQL AB and SAP, was added to
TREX and P*Time to provide persistence and more traditional database features like backup.

HANA (High performance Analytical Appliance) is a new In-Memory data management appliance
released by SAP which is more of separate plug-in (Software & Hardware) for faster analytical
activities. This application allows processing of massive quantities of real time data in the main
memory of the server to provide immediate results for analysis.
HANA is a pre-configured analytic appliance. SAP’s hardware partners provide the hardware
and pre-install the SAP in-memory solution on that hardware.
While HANA has been called variously an acronym for HAsso's New Architecture (a
reference to SAP founder Hasso Plattner) and High Performance ANalytic Appliance.
HANA is a name not an acronym.
Why
SAP
HANA
(SAP In-Memory
Appliance)?
But why SAP HANA and not any of the other SAP modules such FI, MM, PP, CRM, etc? SAP
HANA not only provides the capability to extracting data from the various SAP & Non SAP
Systems
but
also
facilitates
the
Data
Modeling
also.
After some intense research you may be able to make a decision but from someone who has
been engulfed in the field for a while I am convinced that BI Solutions, by nature, brings all the
various functional modules together. SAP HANA serves as a central repository where business
owners pull information if they are interested in seeing all aspects of a project. This ability is a
sure sign that this will continue to be a highly lucrative area to be in. …. Talk to recruiters and get
a real sense of what is going on in your environment. What are your interests? What is your
background?
What
are
your
career
goals?
Once you make the decision on SAP HANA, join us and let’s
have fun!
