En el noroeste de Panamá, en un rincón de la costa casi perdido hasta hace pocos
años, el archipiélago de Bocas del Toro conserva la belleza intacta del Caribe de otra
época. Un conjunto de playas, arrecifes, bosques tropicales en los que abunda la
fauna salvaje y una pequeña población convierten a esta zona en uno de los destinos
más de moda de toda Centroamérica.

■ Si ahora se quisiera navegar por el Caribe
en busca de los paisajes que vio Cristóbal
Colón hace más de 500 años, encontrar lugares que
conservasen la misma apariencia que entonces no
sería tarea fácil. Mucho ha cambiado el litoral de las
islas en este tiempo: ciudades, pueblos y carreteras,
que han modificado para siempre las costas que
descubrió el Almirante. Pero si lo intentamos, la
zona en la que habría más posibilidades de hallar
tramos intactos, lugares que pudiera reconocer un
marino de otros siglos, el mejor destino con toda
seguridad sería la costa oriental de Centroamérica.

Allí todavía es posible, por una serie de razo-
nes tanto geográficas como históricas, encontrar
parajes que nos permiten imaginar cómo sería ese
Caribe de otro tiempo, tener esas visiones primi-
genias de este mar que se reflejaron en su Diario

Todavía hoy gran parte de la costa caribeña de
Panamá permanece tal como él la encontró enton-
ces. El destino del viajero en esta costa es el parque
nacional marino Isla Bastimentos, en el noroeste
del país. Allí está el archipiélago de Bocas del Toro,
donde incluso muchos topónimos recuerdan su
paso: por ejemplo las islas Cristóbal y Colón y la
bahía del Almirante. Incluso ahora, cualquiera que
navegue por estas aguas encuentra que lo que ve
concuerda perfectamente con la descripción de
