LA MICRONESIA

Cultura, natura ed escursioni
nelle isole dell’omonimo arcipelago
Dei molti “mari” che formano il gran-
de lago chiamato Mediterraneo nessu-
no conta tante isole quante ce ne sono
nell’Adriatico.
Of the many ‘seas’ which make up the
expanse of water we call the Mediterra-
nean, none of them have as many is-
lands as the Adriatic Sea.
This sea, which stretches from Istria to
Montenegro, has only two coasts, and no
other body of water is peppered with so
many islands as the eastern shore: the
coast of a thousand islands.

Sull’arcipelago lus-
I mesi profumati Lošinj’s perfumed months
Throughout the Lošinj archipelago it is tradition-
al to mark the months of the year with the scent
of herbs, flowers and local plants.
January and February are marked by lemon, or-
ange and mandarin. March is scented by rose-
mary, laurel and eucalyptus.
April is filled with the scent of asparagus, local
onions and borage.
May is flavoured with sage, fennel and nettle.
June is marked with Scotch broom, lavender
and the silent, endless moss.
July is the month of cherry blossom and mint,
August of oleander, medlar and figs.
September is the month of the red date, grapes,
barbary fig and samphire.
In October the air is filled with the scent of myr-
tle, strawberry and pomegranate.
November is the month of the olive, the wild
rose and quince.
December is the month of pine, juniper and
agave.
Another characteristic of the island is the mild
climate. The archipelago is one of the sunniest
areas in Europe. The sun shines for an average
of seven hours a day, but in summer this av-
erage rises to ten hours. In one year there are
2600 hours of sunlight.
The temperature varies from 7.9 degrees in
winter to 24.4 in July (as a comparison, the
temperature in Naples varies between 3.6 and
32.8 degrees). The sea temperature fluctuates
between a minimum of 8 and a maximum of
23.6 degrees. The wind star includes the mistral
(north-west), the sirocco (warm south-east)
and the bora (north to north-eastern).
As for the western Adriatic coast, the highest
winter temperature is 2-2.5 degrees and the
lowest summer temperature ranges from 0.5-
1.5 degrees.
23,6 gradi.

all’Asinello/Ilovik e
volgendo le spalle
alla ben più affolla-
ta micronesia delle
isole ed isolotti a
sud-ovest dell’isola
to. Il primo studioso a sbarcare su quest’isola,
richiamato dalle sue peculiarità geologiche e
folkloristiche, fu il celebre naturalista padovano
Alberto Fortis, abate (1741-1803), nel 1700. Ne
lasciò una rapida descrizione nel volume „Saggio
As our visit of Ilovik comes to an end, we turn
our backs on the busiest collection of islands
southwest of Pag and the Zara archipelago and
continue our journey through Lošinj’s satellite
islands. As we navigate our way through the
waters which lap the opposite shore to the main
island, our gaze reaches towards Italy. After the
islands which crown the south-most point, an-
other sea, or as Magris said, “another world”
extends.
We head north, disembarking first at Susak,
then on the two tiny islands of Srakane, then
finally on the largest of the minor islands, Uni-
je. We soon realise that not only do the islands
have different aspects; these islands also have
differing natural and ethnographic characteris-
tics which have attacted tourists and academics
alike.
The island of sand
The island of Susak was known by the Romans
as Sansacus, by which it was also refered to
by Pliny the Younger. It lies 6 miles away from
Lošinj, or an hour’s journey by the ferryboat. The
first academic drawn by the island’s geological
and cultural peculiarities was the famous Padu-
an naturalist, Abbot Alberto Fortis (1741-1803)
in 1700. He noted, amongst other things, that
the island had a population of 300 people and
that the sea surrounding it was rich in ancho-
vies. However it is not the size of Susak which is
important but rather its geological structure. No
other island in the Adriatic or Mediterranean is
