From 2008 to 2013, production in the global tea market showed steady
growth, reaching its peak level at 5,346 thousand tonnes. It was followed by a
slight shrinkage over the next two years to 5,058 thousand tonnes in 2015.
In value terms, according to market research conducted by IndexBox, global
tea production came up sharply from 2008 to 2013. After this period, the
value flattened and amounted to 11,633 million USD in 2015.
China and India were the key world tea producing countries with an output of
approximately 1,738 thousand tonnes and 1,191 thousand tonnes,
respectively, in 2015, which accounted for 58% of total global output. The
other major producers were Kenya (8%), Sri Lanka (7%), Viet Nam (4%),
Turkey (4%), and Iran (3%).
Most of the other major producing countries showed growth of tea output in
physical terms. In 2008-2015, annual growth rates were especially high in
China (+4.5%), India (+2.7%), and Kenya (+2.1%).
