This is the 22nd year that Sainsbury’s have supported the Poppy Appeal, by allowing The Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland volunteers to sell paper poppies on store forecourts and inside stores. They are one of the longest Poppy Appeal partners and have raised over £30 million to date through various partnership activities.
In 2015 for the first time, Sainsbury’s greatly supported the Legion and Poppyscotland in revolutionising the way the Poppy Appeal funds are managed, and in doing so ensured a safer and more secure process of collecting and banking our funds for Poppy Appeal volunteers. Sainsbury’s have confirmed they will support again in 2016 with banking through stores and together we are working on developing the process in order to mitigate against the issues that became apparent last year. The banking process will be a compulsory initiative yet again and all collectors must hand their collections over to stores as per the process agreed with Sainsbury’s. More detailed communications regarding process will be agreed by both parties and communicated to all AOs/Store Managers before the summer.
In 2015 Sainsbury’s extended their support even further and offered online customers the unique opportunity to receive a stick-on poppy for a donation with their online grocery shop. Customers generously donated over £18,000 through this initiative and over 18,000 stick-on poppies were delivered in return. One of the first poppies in an online grocery order was delivered by wounded veteran Mark Stonelake on 23rd October 2015.
In 2015 Sainsbury’s also produced a special range of poppy merchandise and Remembrance bouquets that were available in store and online during November, and Sainsbury’s very generously donated all profits to The Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland. This initiative raised over £200,000 for the Armed Forces community.
Sainsbury's are also the only place to offer poppy recycling after Armistice Day. Launched in 2013, the scheme enables us to save vital funds by reusing or recycling the poppies donated.
Various other activity includes Christmas card beneficiaries and our award winning TV Ad that aired in 2014. This was the first TV ad for both the Legion and Poppyscotland and 72% of UK adult population viewed the ad!
The partnership doesn’t stop there though!
New for 2016, Sainsbury’s will be exclusively selling poppy seeds in supermarkets with again with all profits going to The Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland. The public will be encouraged to plant the seeds and support the Legion with its aim of making the UK awash with poppies by 2018.
There will also be other Somme and Remembrance related activity happening to engage local communities and increase the awareness of the charity on the high street.
