“Influence and persuasion is a central part of a leader’s job; leaders
routinely attempt to influence employees to work hard and perform at
a high level. Leadership can have a dark side if managers influence
employees to behave in unethical ways, however. As a management
expert, think about the ethical issues involved in leadership and address
the following questions”
QUESTIONS ON ETHICS
Ethics
 Moral standards
 Right from wrong
 Standards of moral values and conduct that governs decision made and actions
carried out in the work environment.
 A leader should be ethical for the better working of an organization
Leadership
 Exerting influence over the members of organization which include subordinates and
superiors and second is helping the organization to achieve its goals.
 Not necessarily
 Can adopt unethical and immoral means just to gain status power wealth while in
the organization.
Characteristics of an Unethical Leader
 Leader provides wrong information to make his employees to work for his gains than
that of the stakeholders.
 Favoring employee’s closer to the leader.
 Hiding or divulging information which is critical for a task.
 Irresponsible nature of leader
 Not feeling or showing concern towards his employees and organization as a whole.
 Claiming credit of a task done by the group without considering the group and also
putting the blame on employees when something goes wrong.
 Disrespectful nature of the leader.
 Pressurizing an employee by giving him too many tasks which he cannot handle.
 Bribing employees to do personal works by promising them benefits in the future

 Laissez Faire Approach
It is the type in which in leaders are hands-off and allow group members to make
decisions, with minimum amount of supervision
 Autocratic Approach
Managers possess total authority and more often than not, impose their will upon
employees without any consideration for their ideas
 Participative Approach
It values input of team members and peers. In this case, People who are introverts may not
find it easy to communicate their ideas well. They may be left out. So their ideas may not
get much space and attention
 Transactional Approach
This approach involves managers and team members setting pre-determined goals
and employees agreeing to follow the direction of the manager. Herein managers may
provide rewards or punishments to team members based on their performance.
 Transformational Approach
In this approach, leaders play a major role. Leaders motivate employees and enhance
productivity and efficiency through communication and high visibility.
TL(Transformational Leadership) :-
 Transformational Leadership is a leadership approach which tend to bring positive
change in an individual as well as in the social systems.
 He understands strength and weakness of the followers which enables him to
achieve the end goal of TL i.e. to transform its followers into future leaders.
 Certain characteristics exhibited by TL are Extraversion, Openness to experience,
Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Other feature like Neuroticism is less likely
to be the part of TL.
Ethical Context of TL :-
 Ethical leadership behavior include role modeling, demonstrating morality, securing
ethical behavior, contextualizing success, transmitting organizational values and
encouraging transparency.
 The qualitative research also reveals that ethical leaders can be projected in two
dimensions: moral person and moral managers.
 Moral persons have a reputation for being fair and principled.
 The Moral manager dimension refers to how the leader uses the tools for the
positioning of leadership to promote ethical conduct at work
