How are we supporting the development of our staff and students' digital skills?

Supporting academics to flip the classroom Speaker: Fiona McCloy, instructional design consultant, Ulster University. This session provides an overview of a training initiative developed at Ulster University to support academics to flip the classroom. It helps practitioners plan the learning design and activities; overcome challenges; share ideas and experiences; and learn about possible educational technologies to enable it. 3D modelling in teaching and learning Speakers: Matthew Nicholls, associate professor, University of Reading Bunny Waring, undergraduate student, University of Reading Dr Matthew Nicholls, a classicist at the University of Reading, outlines some of the benefits of 3D digital modelling for education. He will showcase his work reconstructing ancient Rome, and teaching students to do the same, and suggest some tools and resources for those interested in having a go themselves. Personalised learning: are you ready? Speakers: Ann Tilbury, academic skills manager, University of the Highlands and Islands Scott Connor, educational development leader, University of the Highlands and Islands Are you ready for personalised learning? This session will introduce the AToM platform highlighting key functionality and outputs. Potential impact and issues relating to its use will be explored. This demo will showcase Jisc Historical Texts and new collections, features and visualisations that have been developed over the last year. Historical Texts provides access to a wide range of historically significant digital collections that are heavily used in teaching, learning and research including Early English Books Online (EEBO), Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) and 65,000 texts from the British Library. A number of innovative visualisations such as hospital maps, wall of images, timelines, and body parts search have been developed to aid the exploration of the content.

What are students’ expectations and experiences of their digital environment? Universities and colleges are increasingly working in partnership with their students on the development of their digital environment and content. As a result, students experience a digitally enabled learning experience which better meets their needs and offers them the digital skills they require for the workplace. But do we really know how students are using technology and do they use the digital content provided or do they find their own from the wealth of resources available online? This interactive workshop will provide participants with an overview of innovative approaches colleges and universities are using to gather their students’ views on digital and how they are they are using the data collected to inform the development of their digitally enhanced learning and teaching provision.

Speakers: Jacqueline Houghton, University of Leeds Annabeth Robinson, senior lecturer, Leeds College of Art The award winning Virtual Landscapes Project is a collaboration between the University of Leeds and Leeds College of Art to develop screen-based virtual reality environments for use in geoscience education. In this session you will see this award winning project which gives students and teachers screen-based virtual reality environments for use in geoscience education. You will be able to access and explore the virtual reality world so if you have a laptop bring it with you to make sure you can virtually roam.

Geoscience education in digital landscapes: the virtual landscapes project

The Jisc Vscene videoconferencing service will be evolving over the coming year with help from our new strategic partner, Ajenta. With this new partnership, there will be improved focus on enhancing the teaching and learning experience. In this workshop you can discover how, through VScene, students learn through virtual classrooms, e-learning and MOOCS as well as enhanced interoperability with desktop applications and mobile devices. Teaching and learning has been enhanced for a community of 1200 physicists, academics, research staff and postgraduate students, whilst significantly reducing their annual teaching and collaboration overheads. How? By effective use of VScene.

This talk presents two different approaches to operationalising a strategic vision around the development of staff digital capability, from both higher and further education contexts. You will be able to hear from one university and one college who will outline their vision for staff digital capability, discuss their approaches and strategies to achieving that vision, and highlight the lessons learnt. This panel discussion will explore institutional visions for a digitally-enhanced student experience. Speakers: Mike Sharples, The Open University / FutureLearn Mike Snowden, University of Huddersfield One of the arguments often made for technology-enhanced learning is that it enables greater flexibility for learners and institutions, enabling learners to vary the mode, pace and place of their learning, and making it easier for non-traditional and geographically distributed students to participate and be supported. In order for this to happen, though, we need to explore new models of provision and delivery, making the most of what technology can offer. In this workshop presenters from a range of HE providers will share how they design learning opportunities and support that is flexible enough to meet the needs of a wide range of students, and will consider the impact on providers and students. Delegates will discuss how these insights can be applied in their own situations.

The use of digital resources in teaching and learning relies on the ability to discover online content and the reliability of such content for use and reuse. Jisc has developed a training package on making your digital resources easier to discover to help content creators optimise their digital collections for discovery, use, reuse and citation so that they can have a stronger impact on teaching, learning and research. Join this demonstration to see the actions collections owners can take to assist resource discovery and to find out more about the training.

Exploiting digital collections in learning, teaching and research

Universities must make strategic decisions in order to thrive in a complex and changing environment. Topics faced are widely applicable across students, staff, research, estates and finance. The data landscape informing these decisions is vast, varied and sub-optimal. A revolution in data exploitation technologies, Jisc and HESA collaborated to deliver business intelligence services to members. This session demonstrates new interactive dashboards available to delegates and provide a glimpse at the immediate future for this service.

Students have an increasing expectation for academic interactions via the same all-pervasive technologies they use socially. How to marry this need for digital engagement with the rigours and expectations of the assessment process is a challenge faced by many institutions. Beyond being a mechanism for managing academic misconduct Turnitin, via Feedback Studio is increasingly being adopted by institutions as a tool for Electronic Management of Assessment (EMA) in order to address this challenge. Learn how technology is engaging and empowering students in the assessment process through innovative approaches to providing constructive and timely feedback beyond a tick or a cross.

Doing better things: transforming how we use Turnitin for learning

Presenter: Sara Perry, director of studies, digital heritage, University of York. This interactive session offers an introduction to the application of a variety of simple digital media technologies in building intellectual independence, critical thinking, professional networks and confidence amongst their users. Such technologies offer not only meaningful creative opportunities, but also mechanisms by which the very nature of academic and professional fields of practice can be prodded, extended and perhaps even fundamentally reconfigured. Alongside considering their problematic implications (including their relationship to free labour, neoliberalism and personal security), I demonstrate here how they promise both to narrow the gap between theory and practice, and simultaneously empower emerging professionals. Please bring your laptop, smartphone or tablet, and come ready to invent, experiment, discuss your experiences and share your questions and concerns about digital media in the educational environment.

Machines don’t forget or get sick; learning analytics is more accurate and not prejudiced; evidence for automated interventions. The human will argue although machines can make predictions they will never be 100% accurate; only a person can factor personal circumstances; automated interventions could be demotivating; automated interventions are not ethical.

“Big data” refers to datasets whose size is beyond the ability of typical database software tools to capture, store, manage, and analyze. This definition is intentionally subjective and incorporates a moving definition of how big a dataset needs to be in order to be considered big data—i.e., we don’t define big data in terms of being larger than a certain number of terabytes (thousands of gigabytes). We assume that, as technology advances over time, the size of datasets that qualify as big data will also increase. Also note that the definition can vary by sector, depending on what kinds of software tools are commonly available and what sizes of datasets are common in a particular industry. With those caveats, big data in many sectors today will range from a few dozen terabytes to multiple petabytes (thousands of terabytes).
