ABOUT MAHATMA BUDDHA
• Mahatma Buddha was born in 623 BC in famous gardens of Lumbini.
• He was Prince of Kapilvastu and his real name was Siddharth Gautam.
• His father’s name was Shudhhodhan and mother’s name was Mahamaya.
• He was married to Yashodhara.
• He became Buddha after he got some enlightment. When he was sitting beneath a
tree in the period between 60 BC and 1100AD.
BUDDHIST SCRIPTURE
Buddhist philosophy are described as ‘Tripitakas’ -
1. Vinaypitaka - rules of conduct
2. Suttapitaka - Buddha sermon
3. Abhidhammpitaka - Exposition of philosophical theories.
FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS IN
BUDDHISM
1. Dukkha - The truth of sufferings.
2. Magga - The truth of cause of
suffering.
3. Nirodha - The truth of end of
suffering.
4. Samudaya – The truth of the path
leading of the end of suffering.
EIGHTFOLD PATHS
1. Right View
2. Right Intention
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
5. Right Livelihood

THE CORE AIM OF BUDDHIST EDUCATION
Reaching the state called
Nirvana
Nirvana is nothing but
peace in your life.
Buddhism was against
the concept of
reincarnation (rebirth)
chain, if human being
reaches in the present life.
AIMS OF BUDDHIST EDUCATION
Preparation for Nirvana or liberation.
Awareness on the four noble truths.
Enabling for following eightfold path.
Spreading of the concept of ‘Ahimsa’.
Character development.
Promotion of international brotherhood.
Practical knowledge.
Promotion of Buddhist culture.
Preparation for life.
TEN RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Not taking life.
2. Taking what is given.
3. Abstaining from impure practices.
4. Not telling a lie.
5. Not drinking.
6. Not eating out of time.
7. Not using Scents, Ornaments etc.
8. Not dancing and singing.
9. Not using high or large couch.
10. Not receiving gold or silver.
PUBJJA CEREMONY
• The meaning of the word ‘pubjja’ is ‘to go out’ to join ‘Sangh Vihar’ or ‘Buddha
Vihar’.
• It was held when the child becomes eight years old.
• The child would shaved his head and would wear yellow clothes.
• Pubjja ceremony is Buddhist version of upnayan ceremmean vedic age.
• He would start the education by taking oath-
“Buddham Saranam gacchami,
Dhammam Saranam gacchami,
Sangham Saranam gacchami.”
Which means “ I take refuge in Buddha,
Dharma (religion) and Sangha.
UPSAMPADA CEREMONY
It occur after join completing 12 years of education at Shankar. At the age of 20 the
child would become a perfect Buddhist monk (bhikshu) and he would join the Sangha
as a teacher.
EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
• It was the first institutionalized residential educational system in India.
• It was multi teacher multi student system.
• Language of instruction was pali.
• Education was available for everybody.
CURRICULUM EDUCATION:
• Three R’s Reading, writing and arithmetic.
• Grammar, Art, Medicine, Logic philosophy etc.
• Agriculture, Astrology, Astronomy law.

WEAKNESS OF BUDDHIST
EDUCATION
There are three major
weakness of Buddhist
education. They are –
1. Neglect of women
education.
2. Neglect of worldly life.
3. Neglect of military training.
