AS Photography – Technical Project
DEADLINE: Last lesson of week beginning 14 October 2013.
During this project you will be learning basic camera and compositional skills, this is a strictly
MANUAL project focusing on your camera controls.
• For the technical exercises you will be working on location at college and at home.
• All of your work needs to be documented in your sketchbook (below). All examples listed
below must be YOUR own work. You will be penalised if it isn’t.
• Final outcomes should be printed in your workbook from college or kiosk printer.
Project Should include the following:
1. History of
Photography
research
i) A 500 word essay / timeline with a brief history of photography.
ii) A diagram of your camera light meter and viewfinder and an
explanation of how it works.
2. ISO iii) Definition of ISO and how it works with aperture/shutter speed.
iv) Your examples of five different ISO settings, eg 100, 200, 400, 800
and 1600, all clearly labelled with your manual settings.
2. Shutter Speed i) Shutter speed definition – and how it works with aperture & ISO.
ii) An example of fast shutter speed, including your manual
settings.
iii) An example of slow shutter speed, including your manual
settings.
3. Aperture i) Definition of aperture and how it works with shutter speed &
ISO.
ii) An example of shallow depth of field, with your manual settings.
iii) An example of extended/wide depth of field, with your manual
settings.
4. Compositional
skills
A definition and one example of each of the following compositional skills:
i) Dramatic perspective
ii) Use of lines e.g. leading lines or converging lines
iii) Framing
iv) Rule of thirds
v) Moving in close
vi) Balance/symmetry
5. Planning Visual mood board of ideas and brainstorm of ideas, including a final
explanation of what your final idea is and why for:
1. shutter speed themed final outcomes
2. aperture final themed outcomes.
3. Include contact sheets for each
6. Artist Research 800 word artist case study on a photographer based on each idea for your
final outcome. This must link to your work visually and conceptually:
1. Artist research for shutter speed final outcomes
2. Artist research for aperture final outcomes
7. Final Outcomes Printed and mounted on photographic paper in your sketchbook:
• Artist statement explaining what your final idea is and why before…
i) 4 final themed photographs on Aperture
ii) 4 final themed photographs on Shutter speed
8. Evaluation Evaluate each final outcome – what you did successfully, what were your
strengths and what you need to improve on.
