THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Body’s Command Centre
by Geet Parhar, Grade 4, Atlantic
WHAT IS IT?
• The nervous system is
the major controlling,
regulatory and
communicating system
of the body.
PARTS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
The main parts of the system are:-
• Brain
• Spinal Cord
• Nerves
• Sensory Organs
FUNCTIONS
• Control of body's internal temperature to maintain
'homeostasis'
• Programming of spinal cord reflexes
• Memory and learning.
• Voluntary control of movement.
COMPARISON OF THE MAIN PARTS
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM-CNS
• The CNS is the processing center of the body and consists
of the brain and the spinal cord
• It receives information from various areas of the body and
then coordinates to produce responses.
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM-PNS
• The peripheral nervous system is made up
of nerves that branch off from the spinal cord
and extend to all parts of the body.
PNS FUNCTIONS
Peripheral nerves reside outside your
brain and spinal cord. They relay
information between your brain and
the rest of your body.
1.Sensory: Connects the brain and
spinal cord to your skin and allow you to feel pain and other sensations.
2.Autonomic: Controls involuntary function (e.g., blood pressure, digestion, heart
rate).
3.Motor: Connects the brain and spinal cord to muscles to stimulate movement.
SUB-PARTS OF PNS
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
• Controls involuntary bodily
functions and regulates glands.
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
• Controls muscle movement and
relays information from ears,
eyes and skin to the central
nervous system.
