5. Questioning violence
• Violence provokes questions and
judgements
• Are we living in a particularly violent
age?
• Political and religious ideologies,
austerity, economic injustice, new
technologies; has violence taken on new
forms in the modern age?
Jeff Moses2015 GCC
6. • New causes to fight for and against –
nationalism, colonialism, communism,
fascism, anarchism
• Role of modern technologies and
communication networks
• Attacks on Western modernity (although
groups like al-Qaida use modern
technologies)

8. AL QAIDA
In the 1990s a new strand of
global terrorism emerged. Osam
Bin Laden, son of a wealthy
Saudi family established a
fanatical cell of Islamic
extremists.
Hatred of the USA, its Allies and
other Arab regimes was
unlimited. Their campaign of
murder and terror started in
1998 with attacks on western
embassies around the world.

13. The Madrid train bombings consisted of a series of
coordinated bombings against the Cercanías (commuter train)
system of Madrid, Spain on the morning of 11 March 2004
(three days before Spain's general elections), killing 191 people
and wounding 1,800.[1] The official investigation by the Spanish
Judiciary determined the attacks were directed by an al-Qaeda-
inspired terrorist cell[2][3] although no direct al-Qaeda
participation (only "inspiration"[4][5][6]) has been established.[7][8][9
