8. Database searching
Remember to think carefully about your search
terms and use the following search operators
(Boolean operators) to limit and refine your
search:

AND to find records containing all terms
OR to find records containing any of the terms
NOT to exclude records containing certain words from your search

Click on ‘Sign in’ to register .
Please note that you do not
have to sign in to use these
databases, but if you register
you can create your own
profile, save searches and
create alerts.

Search tips:
• Use the OR operator to broaden your
search and to find similar concepts
• The use of truncation:
Truncation is represented by an asterisk (*).
To use truncation, enter the root of a search
term and replace the ending with an *.
EBSCOhost finds all forms of that word.
For example, type comput* to find the words
computer or computing.

‘Update’.
Choose a more
specific subject , for
example ‘structural
geology’

Click on the SFX button.
This tells you whether the article
is available in full text or not.
16. SFX – Linking to an external database
The SFX screen also
tells you in which
database the article is
indexed.
In this case it is
available from Allen
Press and Swetswise
Click on the GO
button to get the full
text.
17. Send files to a Bibliography Manager
Select the reference
you wish to import by
clicking on the title
of the article.

Click the Export to Bibliography
Manager button

Choose the Manager e.g. RefWorks
Click Save

open if you have

39. To request items online via Interlibrary Loans.
Step 1.
Go to website http://www.lib.uct.ac.za/services/interlibrary-loans/
Register with Interlibrary loans according to instructions on page.
40. Step 2.
Once you have your password from
Interlibrary loans, click on Submit ILL requests
41. Step 3.
Fill in your staff /student number in the user
box and in the next box fill in your password
that you received from Interlibrary loans.
43. Step 5.
From the drop down menu choose Journal
Article and then click on SELECT
44. Step 6.
Fill in the relevant information in the boxes
provided and then click on Submit Request
45. Step 7.
You will then be prompted to make any
changes/edits to the information on this
screen.
If the information that you supplied is
correct, click on Submit Request to send your
request to Interlibrary Loans.
