MEDIA CODES & CONVENTONS
Codes are defined as many signs which create meaning within a media
product. Conventions are defined as general accepted ways of doing things
within a media product.
For example in films many different genres have different code and
conventions so the genre is easily recognisable for example horror films
often have darker lighting and music with a faster tempo whilst westerns
often use cowboys and guns to show its genre
Bottle of drink on the left slanted
with jumper cables on the lid
powering a sign showing there call
to action "get plugged in"
Black background so the green
bottle and sign are really eye
catching
Drinkable energy written in bottom
right to show its an energy drink
Can of drink in the centre,
background uses the same colour
scheme of the brand,
Red cape representing the brand
slogan red bull gives you wings.
Energy written in large font behind
the can to show its an energy drink
Can of fanta in the centre with a
bright orange background matching
house style. Oranges are seen
around the the can showing the
main flavour of the drink, Fanta
written in a large font at the top of
the ad
Social media advert
The can being placed in the centre of the advert is conventional of
a fizzy drink social media advert as most of the other drinks have theres
centred
Strawberry laces behind the can showing the flavour sticking to the
conventions of fizzy drinks this is similar to fantas with there use of the
oranges
A large slogan either side of the can also fits the conventions of a fizzy
drink this is similar to the use of "ENERGY" behind the redbull can in
there advert
The call out circle is conventional too with information about the
ingredients is very conventions in adverts from a social media advert
about a product however this is especially common in the drink
industry
The bottle is centred to the left
with text on the right, large text in
white with the word bold in bold
easily grabbing the audiences
attention so they wil read it.
Colourful background matching the
bottle
Logo on the poster underneath the
text so as soon as they stop reading
they see the brand
Brand conventional coloured
background allowing content in
front to be focused on can
placed in the centre of the poster
with ice chunks around it making
looking refreshing. Logo on poster.
Writing saying where its available
on the bottom of the poster
The can is centred in the middle of
the poster it has ice around the
bottom of the can showing how the
drink is refreshing.
It also has grapes falling around it
showing the flavour of the drink
Purple background matching the
background of the fanta can
Poster adverts
The slogan is written in a large font at the top centre of the poster with
an embedded hashtag.
The background is simple yet effective at communicating what the
product is inferring the flavour of the drink to the audience as there is
strawberry laces around the back of the can similar to the Fanta grape
poster
The call out circle is conventional too with information about the
ingredients is very conventions in poster adverts about a
consumable product however this is especially common in the drink
industry
The can is placed in the centre of the poster being the first thing that
the audience looks at. This lets them see what the product looks like so
that they will recognise the phizzwizard brand
In the poster it says Available in all major UK retailers’ this is a
convention of a poster for a product this tells the audience that the
product is popular and the positioning of this is also very conventional.
End scene of red bull we always
see this image of a man on a can
flying with there slogan, this all
takes place in the middle of the
screen so its eye catching and
cant be missed, The can is easily
visible Aswell
After consuming the product
we see the man begin to dance
to show the audience how
much he likes the drink and its
like it was controlling him
In this shot of the fanta advert
we see multiple bottles of fanta
in the fridge showing how much
he likes the drink and he buys a
large quantity at a time not just
one bottle. We can easily see
the brand of drink as the labels
all face the audience
Commercial tv advert
My advert includes many conventions of a typical
advert for a fizzy drink, The first convention we can see
is 2 people dancing in a disco like setting after tasting
the drink symbolising that the drink is like a party in
your mouth.
Another very common convention used is the stock
piling of the drink this is very similar to the Fanta
advert as we also see them have many drinks in the
fridge.
During the final 5 seconds of our advert we have a shot
of our drink with the typical strawberry lace
background with the slogan and call to action with the
hashtag with the brand name top and central so
everyone can easily see what drink it is with a jingle to
help the visually impaired
Visual expression of character when trying the drink is
very conventional of a drink advert. Many brands use
the eye widening expression caused by the drink when
characters consume it this is to emphasise how good
the drink is.
The actors are wearing urban clothes to fit in the
audience to make them seem more relatable and
engage the younger audience so they feel included and
purchase the drink
