2. Singapore
 Japan remains a global economic power
house and has enough security to humble
great powers
 South Korea is Asia's success story from
going to a country that needed lots of aid to
now being a first world state
 South Korea's ties with the US are in danger
because they want less American troops and
favor the help of China
 Singapore is most successful avatar of the
Asian way
 Singapore has a big success with its
government and people that they have
enough public satisfaction to not be so hard
on rules and laws
 Singapore, however, is known as also very
boring even to its people and has the highest
divorce rate

3. Malaysia and Indonesia
 Malaysia
- understands the physical side of development
and glorifies trains and buildings more than
individuals
- greatest icon of Malaysia's success is the Kuala
Lumpur's Petronas towers
- Asian values, Islam, and democracy are all
together in Malaysia, but not a problem
 Indonesia
-Indonesia is prone to volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes, tsunamis, infectious diseases,
financial crises, and ethnic strife and is
powerless to all of them
- vast geography and world's 4 largest population
makes Indonesia be called the “sleeping
giant”
- has the second highest number of endangered
animals and still doesn't get a lot of aid from
US

4. Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam
 Myanmar
-located on the Bay of Bengal and is isolated,
antiquated, and underdeveloped
-Being down stream from China does not make life
easy because dams keep the water away
 Thailand
-Thailand was able to save itself from destruction in
WWII by being able to “smile” to everyone
-Thailand and US ties were good until the US did not
help with Thailand's currency crisis and now they
are looking more towards China for help
 Vietnam
-Vietnam is the only country China has invaded but
not conquered
-Vietnam favors China's model of centralized political
control while liberalizing the economy, but they
don't want to fall into Sinocentric order and reach
out to the US for help

5. Size Matters
 China is divided into 4 quadrants
-southeast including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and
Shanghai
-northeast including Beijing
-two western quadrants including Tibet and
Xinjiang
 2oth century shows chinese hard work in the
intensified search for a workable economic
system for such a large population
 China is a universe into itself with its own
literature, philosophies, and dramatic forms
 Today China portrays itself as a great
merchant ship navigating globalization's
waters
 China benefits from foreign know how and the
first world sweats to keep up
