What is Culture?
1. Traditionally Culture = Civilization (as opposed to
nature)
“High culture”,
Mathew Arnold’s definition: “the result of the best that has been
thought and said in the world”
Elite view: indigenous peoples as 'noble savages’
Culture with capital C (as opposed to popular culture: culture
with K)

2. Social anthropology: Culture as world view. Edward
Taylor: “It includes knowledge, belief, art, morals,
law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits
acquired by man as a member of society”
3. Cultural anthropology: Culture as symbols. The
universal human capacity and activities to classify,
codify and communicate their experiences
symbolically. People use common symbols to
communicate and understand each other

Diversity, 2002): “the set of distinctive spiritual,
material, intellectual and emotional features of society
or a social group, which encompasses, in addition to
art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together,
value systems, traditions and beliefs”

competences which are part of communicative competence.
