The Bananas
2. Scientific Name of the Banana.
Musa paradisiaca
family Belonging wing.
Musa.
3. Origin.
Christopher Columbus brough it to America on his
second voyage.
It is one of the oldest fruits in the history of man.
Banana is the modern culture, probably originating
from the Indo-Malayan region. They spread from
Indonesia to the south and west, reaching Hawaii
and Polynesia stages.
4. Parts of the plant.
The banana is an annual plant, the root is a
rhizome and short, soft and hollow stem. This last
go around pseudostems forme by sheaths. The
leaves are long and straight; male flowers and
bracts deciduous. The fruits are borne in clusters,
they are edible, sweet taste and many varieties.
5. Ground.
Batches must be selected, well-drained, rich in
organic matter and nutrient elements soils.
Musaceae are very demanding in nutrients.
Seed Selection.
Because they are hybrids (result of a cross,
natural or artificial, between two species) and
sterile (no seeds reproduce asexually). The
original species of bananas are musa acuminata
and musa a balbisiana L L. and its fruits are
much smaller and have seeds.
6. Irrigation.
This technology package, the practice of risk is
critical and is performed every 8 or 10 days. The
irrigation method used is by gravity, where the
mater is conducted by canals and dam on the
¨beds¨.
Production Time.
From planting until it gives its fist fruits, it takes
about three years. The fruit itself takes form
between 80 and 180 days, depending on climate,
soil and irrigation
7. Harvest.
The fruit is harvested when it has already taken its
volume but before yellowing, around three
quarters of the maturation process. At this time the
fruits seem already less angular, and floral styles at
its end have withered and removed easily. Some 80
days after the opening of the first hand, whole
bounches are cut with a banana knife curved blade.
