2. Six Thinking Hats is a system designed by
Edward de Bono
It describes a tool for group discussion and
individual thinking involving six colored hats
"Six Thinking Hats" and the associated idea
parallel thinking provide a means for groups
to plan thinking processes in a detailed and
cohesive way, and in doing so to think
together more effectively.
3. Make it easier to clearly identify different
ways of thinking
Colored hats are used as metaphors
Act of putting on a colored hat allows
symbolically thinking
Hat will function as directions
Hats can be assigned to individual team
members or can be used singly to request the
type of thinking
Can also be used in a sequence to explore a
subject or solve a problem.
4. White Hat thinking focuses on data, facts,
information known or needed.
Participants make statements of fact, including
identifying information that is absent and
presenting the views of people who are not
present in a factual manner.
5. Red Hat thinking focuses on
feelings, hunches, gut instinct,
and intuition.
In many cases this is a method for
harvesting ideas. It is not a
question of recording statements,
but rather getting everyone to
identify their top two or three
choices from a list of ideas or
items identified under another hat.
6. Black Hat thinking focuses on difficulties
or potential problems. Example why
something may not work.
This is critical thinking; looking for
problems and mismatches. This hat is usually
natural for people to use. The issues with it are
that people will tend to use it when it is not
requested and when it is not appropriate.
7. Yellow Hat thinking focuses on values and
benefits. Example why something may work.
This is the opposite of black hat thinking and
looks for the reasons in favor of something.
This is still a matter of judgement; it is an
analytical process, not just blind optimism. You
are trying to create justified statements in
favor of something.
8. Green Hat thinking focuses on
creativity; possibilities,
alternatives, solutions or new
ideas.
It is based around the idea of
thinking for the sake of identifying
new possibilities. Things are said
for the sake of seeing what they
might mean, rather than to form a
judgement.
9. Blue Hat thinking focuses on managing the
thinking process, focus, next steps or action
plans.
The facilitator will generally wear it throughout
and each member of the team will put it on
from time to time to think about directing their
work together.
