Video games are a new thing to libraries, but they've been well established in our culture for over 30 years. In order to reach out to all of our unique patron groups, video games in libraries should be embraced by librarians as a way to connect with our community. This presentation will focus on educating librarians on how to start a video gaming program at their public library. Taking a simple, cost effective approach, the aim of this presentation is to remove any worries about gaming in libraries and instead replace them with positive, forward thinking ideas. - I'm Justin Hoenke, teen librarian for the Portland Public Library. I'm not much of a book person. I was always reading magazines, playing video games, and coming up with my own tales. How did I get to become a librarian? Well, I just wanted to help people.
- I got my MLIS from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 2008. I worked at the Cape May County Library in New Jersey from 2008-2010. I started at the Portland Public Library in Maine on March 23, 2010.
- Gaming builds community. This is taken from a library lock in event that I had at CMC Library. ALL of these teens met each other FIRST at our game night events.
- Games have storylines. These have all the elements of books: plot, characters, rising action, end, middle, beginning, climax, conflict.
- Games are full of mythology. Games create their own universe in which the player can immerse themselves in.
- GAMES TELL A STORY
- You will be equiped with four 4-player capable games, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Sports Resort, and Mario Kart Wii, as well as have rechargable batteries, cases, and a console. You probably can’t get more bang for your buck as far as basic library programming goes.
