2. BBC Radio 1 as a whole
• BBC Radio 1 is a British Radio station operated by the British Broadcasting
Corporation. It broadcasts internationally and specialises in modern and current
popular music and chart hits throughout the day.
• BBC Radio 1’s remit is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners
with a distinctive mix of contemporary speech. There target audience is 15-29
year olds. To do this, BBC Radio 1 use platforms such as Twitter, snapchat,
Instagram and Facebook to promote the show and encourage young people to
tune it.
• However, a new research of 1,000 radio 1 listeners carried out by BDRC
continental found that77% felt that the BBC should produce content that is
distinctive from commercial radio.
• Also when asked, only a third of Radio 1 listeners (33%) thought that BBC Radio
was different to commercial radio and only 23% thought that it informed and
educated the public.

• Tony Blackburn opened Radio 1 on 30 September 1967 at 7.0 a.m.
• The first track Blackburn played was ‘flowers in the rain’ by The
Move.

4pm-5.45) would take over Chris Moyles
breakfast show

“Grimshaw is a broadcaster at the top of
his game and it would have been a
mistake to expect him to wait to take on
the most high-profile slot in UK radio.”

RAJAR began collecting data in 1992.

the show was averaging around 7 million

10. Importance of Radio 1 breakfast
The 6.30am to 9am day part is a important part of the radio
schedule as it draws in listeners, which the station hopes will
result in them to listen over a longer period.
Radio 1 attracts nearly 6 million listeners a day. Those Radio
1 listeners that listened at breakfast were asked what they
mostly remember hearing on the show.
The highest recalled aspect was current chart music (57%)
followed by presenter banter (52%) other key requirements
such as songs by new artists come out much lower (23%).
13. BBC Radio 1’s ‘Biggest Weekend’
• Radio 1’s Biggest Weekend is taking place from Friday 25 May – Monday 28 May 2018.
• The gigs will take place across four cities – Belfast, Coventry, Perth and Swansea.
• A ticket costs £18 (plus a £4.50 booking fee) . Its cheap price allows younger audiences to have interest in the event.
• Information about the event is announced on different platforms including, the website www.bbc.co.uk/biggestweekend,
and @bbcmusic on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
• The BBC have announced that Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Noel Gallagher will be headlining.
• Ed Sheeran has previously been on the show, back in 2012. Ed Sheeran says: “So excited to be part of The Biggest
Weekend this summer! I’ve always loved performing at Big Weekend with Radio 1 and this year it’s going to be even
bigger. “
• Taylor Swift has also previously been on the show, back in 2015.
• These celebrities attract 16-18 year olds due to them headlining the event, however parents are attracted using other
famous celebrities from their childhood, and of their age such as Noel Gallagher. Similarly, they attract the audiences
through daily competitions to win free tickets.
