  4. 4. Mindset – What is it? Mindset is defined as a set of beliefs or way of thinking that determines someone’s behaviour, outlook and mental attitude that impacts the outcome of someone’s endeavours. Think about your intelligence, your talents, your personality. Are these qualities simply fixed traits, carved in stone and that’s that? Or are they things you can cultivate throughout your life? An effective mindset is one that makes the best use of available resources – time, energy and efforts. April 2016The Right Mindset: Change Your Mindset in Six Steps 4
  5. 5. Why mindset coaching? Why do I describe myself as a mindset coach rather than any other kind of coach? Basically, your mindset is the beliefs you hold about yourself and these beliefs have an enormous influence on every aspect of your life personally and professionally. In mindset coaching I look at the beliefs that you have about yourself and see if they are aligned with where you really want to be. If they aren’t, we will work on changing the beliefs that are not aligned. In short, we will work on removing the obstacles and self limiting beliefs replacing these with more positive beliefs, greater confidence and increased self-esteem. And the exciting part about this? It allows you to achieve your goals and dreams and live a happier more confident life. April 2016The Right Mindset: Change Your Mindset in Six Steps 5

  17. 17. Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset • I can learn anything I want to. • When I’m frustrated, I persevere. • I want to challenge myself. • When I fail, I learn. • Tell me I try hard. • If you succeed, I’m inspired. Fixed Mindset • I’m either good at it, or I’m not. • When I’m frustrated, I give up. • I don’t like to be challenged. • When I fail, I’m no good. • Tell me I’m smart. • If you succeed, I feel threatened. April 2016The Right Mindset: Change Your Mindset in Six Steps 17
  18. 18. Growth mindset vs Fixed mindset People with a fixed mindset believe that their traits are just givens. They have a certain amount of brains and talent and nothing can change that. If they have a lot, they’re all set, but if they don’t… So people in this mindset worry about their traits and how adequate they are. They have something to themselves and others. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, see their qualities as things that can be developed through their dedication and effort. Sure they’re happy if they’re brainy or talented, but that’s just the starting point. They understand that no one has ever accomplished great things – not Mozart, Darwin, or Michael Jordan – without years of passionate practice and learning.
