Open Access in context
Why is KU needed?
 Prices have increased beyond inflation
 Libraries struggling to afford books
 Academics struggling to get published
 Readers have limited access to the books they want
 Digital technology is providing opportunities to
widen access and increase impact
 Research funders are beginning to require Open
Access
 Many authors would like OA options

KU – Berlin
KU – Ann Arbor, Michigan
KU Research – Perth
Knowledge Unlatched
 Collaborative initiative – libraries and
publishers working together
 A road to OA
 A space to learn together
 KU Research
What is Knowledge Unlatched?
Consortium Approach
 Libraries pledge a capped amount to ‘unlatch’
the books
 If enough libraries pledge, the libraries share the
payment of a Title Fee for each book
 The Title Fee represents the basic cost of
publishing a book
 Because the Title Fee is a fixed amount KU can set
a low pledging price for target number of libraries
Consortium Approach
The KU Model
What KU has done so far
 106 books from 26 publishers unlatched
 380 libraries plus consortia participated in
24 countries
Pilot Collection:
 74,000 downloads (OAPEN, The Internet Archive)
 22,000 page views (HathiTrust)
 183 countries
 Averages 2,600 downloads per book!
What KU has done so far
Usage statistics
Accessing the Books
http://collections.knowledgeunlatched.org
Libraries Participating in KU
Excluding Consortia
 Opportunity for libraries to act as catalysts in the
shift towards Open Access
 Enables libraries to contribute to fulfilling OA
mandates in certain territories
 Libraries from around the world collaborate to share
the costs of making books open access
 The best way to get high quality books at affordable
prices
Why participate?
 Librarians have curated KU Select 2016 to give it
a global appeal
 Flexible offering – pick and choose option now
available, following requests
 Hosted on OAPEN and HathiTrust
 Creative Commons Licences (DRM-free)
 Preserved by CLOCKSS and Portico
 Immediate upon publication (no embargo)
Why participate?
 Early invoicing possible upon request
 Libraries will receive access to their own usage
statistics (from 2017)
 Libraries will receive high quality MARC records
 35% discount on purchases of other formats from
publishers in recognition of KU participation
 Involvement with the creation of future collections
and steering KU.

  1. Knowledge Unlatched is a not for profit initiative helping libraries to share the costs of making books Open Access.   We are focused specifically on front-list titles for now. That is, we are dealing with forthcoming books.   And by Open Access we mean available to any one in the world to read or download for free, on a Creative Commons Non-Commercial license, immediately upon publication.
