Electrical Technician at Rio Tinto Alcan, Lochaber Smelter
My duties included electrical installations, planned maintenance, reactive maintenance & fault finding. Also
gained experience in pneumatics, hydraulicsand weldingwhilst workingin this multi skilled position. Working
in an industrial environment, such as the Lochaber Smelter, will stand me in good stead for working in any
industry. My role was partof a two-man engineering team workingon a 5 shift12 hour system responsiblefor
all engineering activities on site during Out of Hours operations.
Duties included maintainingand faultfindingon various complex control systems and carrying outfaultfinding
and repairs in a methodical, logical fashion under significant production pressure, especially overnight when
the only engineering personnel on site. The electrical equipment on siteincludes SCADA controlled production
processes e.g. Fume Plant, large 3 phase AC motors and associated control systems, Air Compressors & an
11KV High Voltage Network. With a significant number of large travelling overhead pendant controlled,
remote controlled and cabin controlled cranes all with complex control systems including load cells, proximity
sensors, slack rope detectors & variable speed drives.
