lathe cutting tools
1. Lathe is a machine that helps in shaping several material
pieces in the desired shapes.
2. Shaping up different materials and performing various functions such as
sanding, deformation, cutting, facing, knurling, drilling, turning and much more
is done with the lathe machines
3. The general operations done with the lathe
are grooving, turning, cutting, sanding , etc
TYPES OF LATHE OPERATION
4. 1. facing/turning tools:
Facing is the process of removing metal from the end of a work
piece to produce a flat surface
This tool should be used if we need to shorten the length of the
stock or make the diameter smaller.
Its main function is to face the stock so we can have a nice smooth
surface to work with.
5.
6. Chamfering is the operation of beveling the extreme end of the work piece.
Chamfering is an essential operation after thread cutting so that the nut may pass
freely on the threaded work piece.
This tool should be used if we need to make a chamfer on the edge of a work
piece Or to break an edge.
7. Knurling is the process of embossing a diamond shaped
pattern on the surface of the work piece.
This tool should be used if we need to put a knurling on
our stock. This is normally used on knobs where better
grip is needed.
8. Parting or cutoff is the operation of cutting a piece off by slicing a
groove all the way through it with a special parting or cutoff tool
This tool should be used if we need to cut some of the stock off to
shorten it.
These tools are generally thin blades of HSS
9. This tool should be used if we need to cut a
channel into the stock. Such as O-ring
groves or any other small depth groove.
10. These can cut outside surfaces and edges.
There are versions that consist of a piece of
carbide brazed onto a rectangular steel bar.
