1. Q2. How does your media productrepresentparticular social groups?
To answer this question I will be looking at the different social groups and how
I have used them to representthe genre of music that I have chosen which a
sub-genreof rock. The different groups that I will be looking at is Gender, age,
social class and ethnicity.
Gender:
Rock music magazine are predominantly based around male
artists and the genre as a whole has a larger amount of
male artists. In music magazineand music videos males are
typically playing instruments as they are seen to be more
powerfuland skilful. To keep to the conventions and create
a magazine that my target audience would expect and
possibly relate to I decided to have an image of a band
playing instruments, this band was also all male as well as
the image on the frontbeing all male.
This example of the NME magazine features an artist from
the samegenre as mine, this is the artic monkeys. This an
explain of this genre being mainly made up of male artists,
the styleof clothing is also similar making them look
unique and making them contrastfromthe regular genre
of rock.
Age:
My magazineis going to be aimed at the ages between 15-24. In order for my
magazine to appeal the mostto them I have decided to useimages of artist
that are from the same age range. This will allow my audience to relate to
them morein many aspects such as their style. Also the specific genre that I
am using for my magazine is indie rock, which is mainly produced by a younger
generation of artists which influences a younger generation of listeners. The
three magazine examples shown below all feature artist froma similar age as
mine as well as my target audience.
2. Social class:
Another way to relate my magazine to my target audience is by having the
artist possibly fromthe same socialclass and background as them. The artists
that I have feature are likely to be froma middle class background. Although
my target audience will come froma mixture of different backgrounds and
social classes I believe that it will be predominantly from a middle class
background. I believe this mainly due to the price of the magazine which is
£3.50 and it will be published monthly. Audience members from a middle class
background willbe more attracted and willing to pay for the magazinebecause
it is seen as more affordable. On the other hand an audience member from a
working class background maybeless attracted to the price becauseit may be
harder for them to afford my magazine.
Ethnicity:
The ethnicity in my magazine is monocultural, this meaning that I have only
used one type of ethnicity in the photographs for my magazine. I had decided
to only use white people in my magazine due to the genre of music that I had
chosen is dominantly performed by white people. So to keep my magazine as
realistic as possibleI needed to relate the models in my magazineto the genre
as much as I could. Also due to the area that I live in has a higher proportion of
white people then black people. Itwould be hard for me to include a black
person in my magazinedue to this.
