2. Man with a club Buck has learned that the man with the club (Perrault) is always in charge. He should not fight back because he can’t fight back. He is not strong enough and of course is not smart enough. This will prove it. “A dozen times he charged, and as often the club broke the charge and smashed him down.” The man only had to move his hand when it took almost the life out of Buck. Therefore Buck now knows not to fight back against the man. Buck was at the top of his game back in the mansion he was the leader but here he knows he is just one of the sled dogs but he is prized for his abilities. Buck is just one of them not the leader of the pack anymore when he was in Santa Clara Valley.
3. Food Food was not a problem. The master fed the dog to give it power and they were fair to make sure everybody got the same amount. Spitz tried to take the food but of course the masters were fair about it so they stopped him. “ He speedily learned that Perrault and Francois were fair men, calm and impartial in administering justice, and too wise in the way of dogs to be fooled by dogs.” The fairness was the same but I think that back in the mansion Buck got any food he wanted without anyone daring to steal it. The master was fair with the food and if anybody tried to eat some ones else food the dog would be whipped. The dogs were fed food so they would have energy to run and haul the master.
4. How to react to other dogs The masters handled most of the physical reactions but interior he has faced. When Curley died his interior hatred came out. But when she was being ripped apart the masters broke it apart. Also when Spitz tried to take Bucks food the master whipped him. “As Buck sprang to punish him, the lash of Francois's whip sang through the air, reaching the culprit first; and nothing remained to Buck but to recover the bone.” The masters did what was fair. All Buck reacted was how cruel other dogs are. All of this was opposite of how he was in his old home. Back at his old home he had nothing to worry because the mansion was already heavily armed. + = Behaved sled dog like when the master whipped Spitz for trying to eat Bucks food the whip taught him to stop.
5. Dogs sleeping Buck has learned how to sleep in the snow and cold. All he needs to do is make a hole in the snow and sleep there to keep him warm. Buck has to change himself and learn how to live in the different environment because it is the opposite of sunny and warm. Sleeping in hole in the snow is a step to live in the new environment. It’s true that he sleeps in a hole to make him warm from this text. “Buck confidently selected a spot, and with much fuss and wasted effort proceeded to dig a hole for himself. In a trice the heat from his body filled the confined space and he was asleep.” This proves that Buck did find a way to sleep in the new environment. Dogs try to warm themselves like this but usually deeper in the snow. The surrounds come in and the heat is trapped inside.
6. Curly dies When Curly died it brought mixed emotions to Buck especially mad ones. He knew that once you were involved you can get out with a good result or no result at all. The outcome was her ripped up in pieces… “But she lay there limp and lifeless in the bloody, trampled snow, almost literally torn to pieces, the swart half-breed standing over her and cursing horribly. “ It wasn’t fair at all he saw that the top dogs did what they wanted. It concluded that he was no longer at the top. This sled dog is dead in whole piece. I would show you how Curly looked but it’s to horrifying. She was ripped up in pieces.
