2. ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
University BDT College of Engineering (UBDTCE), Davangere,
is located in the central part of Karanataka (State), INDIA.
Started in the year 1951, it was the only Governement
Engineering College in the state. The College was named after
the donors Bramhappa Devendrappa Tanvanappanavar (BDT),
who donated 1.5 lakh rupees for the construction of the
buildings. The then Maharaja of Mysore Sri Jayachamarajendra
Wodeyar Bahadur laid the foundation stone for the College
building on August 7, 1951. Subsequently, the College building
was completed and inaugurated on September 24, 1956. The
College continued as the only Government Engineering College
(GBDTCE) affiliated to University of Mysore, for the entire state
of Karnataka until it was transferred to Kuvempu University on
June 1, 1992, as a Constituent Engineering College. Later on,
with the establishment of Davangere University, UBDTCE
became its Constituent Engineering College on August 18, 2009.
Again, the College was transferred to Visvesvaraya
Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, on February 24,
2011 as its first Constituent Engineering College.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year
1957 and is one of the largest department in the college. The present
intake for the UG courses is 70. The department also runs two PG
courses in Machine Design and Thermal Power Engineering. The
department has an established research centre under VTU Belgaum.
The department with its experienced faculty and state of the art
laboratories has been contributing richly to the growth and
development of the institution and its stake holders.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Recent Progress and Challenges Ahead to Assure Quality in
Higher Education is intended to present the latest research,
results, ideas, developments and applications in all areas of
quality assurance in higher education. Quality improvement
initiatives are a must in Technical Education system in India to
prepare both students and technical teachers not only for local
employment but also for employment in the global market.
Therefore, the aim must be to achieve international standards in
all respects. A holistic approach instead of piecemeal approach is
a must for achieving that high level. Application of principles of
Total Quality Management in technical education must be made
to convert the threat of getting marginalized to an opportunity to
achieve excellence.
Higher education in the world is currently facing serious
challenges with reference to globalization and the educational
open door policy. Higher education is a cornerstone in the
promotion and development of nation. Thus, the quality of
performance of higher education determines the future and status
in India in the academic map of the world. This, in turn, entails
that the community should be keen on the promotion and
development of higher education via its concerned institutions,
so as to apply the concepts of total quality management in order
to ensure the good quality of academic/scientific research and
academic products in general.
This definitely means that great efforts are needed to develop the
quality of higher education as well as enhance the ability of our
universities to acquire the modern properties of innovation and
creativity, which have become a requirement of this new era of
information and globalization. The faculty development program
aims at crystallizing an integrated understanding of the quality of
institutional performance as well as shedding light on the
mechanisms to develop it. It also helps to meet some of the
accreditation requirements for higher education institutions;
confronting the challenges of implementing the Total Quality
Management (TQM) concepts at these institution and making use
of experiences of the educational institutions.
