This document outlines a film project between two schools in Greece and France from 2011-2012. It describes the four stages of the project which included practicing close-up, medium, and long shots as well as creating individual scenes and a final collaborative film. Students learned film techniques, shared cultural traditions, and taught each other about school subjects by creating educational video clips. The project was a success, winning awards, and allowing students to strengthen cultural understanding through filmmaking.

4 Stages
Stage 1 Close up scenes
Summary: At this stage students of both countries began to familiarize
themselves with the necessary basic skills for film production.
Activities: Practice on the use of the camera
Practice on the storyboard
Practice on the close-up scene
Prepare a story board and take short shots based on the following
facial expressions : Anger Fear
Happiness Sadness
Surprise Sickness
Fatigue/Tiredness
Practice on movie maker and production of the first clip using the
above shots . Each pupil edits his own clip and puts the title of the
expression at the beginning and the actor’s/actress’s name; and “the
end” sign at the end of the clip

Stage 1 Close up scenes
Summary: At this stage students of both countries began to familiarize
themselves with the necessary basic skills for film production
Activities: We also had a contest : ...and the best actor is …. Pupils from
Greece voted for the best French actor/actress and pupils from
France for the best Greek actor/actress.

Summary: At this stage students of both countries began to familiarize

Targets: To learn why the sort shots scenes are used
To learn how to edit a short clip in the movie maker
To be actors/actresses.
To feel comfortable in front of the camera.
To make the first contact between pupils from both schools

Stage 2 Medium shot scenes
Summary: Pupils worked on paper so as to prepare the story board for some
medium shot scenes
There were three types of scenes here :
One with the narrator alone to say something
One with the narrator(s) in front and an object in the background.
One with an object in front and the narrator(s) in the background.
This is the stage where school subjects started to be parts of the
project
There were 4 different sub-stages here according to pre-agreed-
on targets

Stage 2 Medium shot scenes
1st sub-stage: Let’s play and learn each other
Summary: This was the consecution of the previous main stage and served the
target of knowing each other better through a game
Activities: Pupils had to prepare a medium shot scene with their likes
Pupils had to work with Movie Maker and edit their own video clip
adding a music theme on the background
Pupils had to prepare a power point presentation with their likes
All these were uploaded on our twinspace and the pupils from the
other country had to match the video clip with the Power Point
presentation thus to “find who likes what”

1st sub-stage: Let’s play and learn each other
Summary: This was the consecution of the previous main stage and served the
target of knowing each other better through a game
Targets: To learn why the medium-shots scenes are used
To learn how to edit a short clip in the Movie Maker and to add music
in the background.
To speak for the first time in front of the camera and thus to exercise
their oral ability but also their ability to listen to a foreign language as
well, trying to match a video clip with a Power Point presentation

Stage 2 Medium shot scenes
2nd sub-stage: Traditions or Merry Christmas
Summary: The main target here was to learn each other traditions
Activities: Teams prepared a storyboard for filming their classmates while
singing traditional carols and songs in their own language and in
English as well and a story board where the narrator explained a
traditional custom
Pupils prepared wish-cards with Christmas Wishes
Pupils worked on Movie Maker to edit the above scenes and to make
a video clip with video or a slide show with photos
Pupils from both schools prepared a “parcel of surprise to send to the
others. This parcel was filled with the above cards and some traditional
sweets of each country

Stage 2 Medium shot scenes
2nd sub-stage: Traditions or Merry Christmas
Summary: The main target here was to learn each other traditions
Targets: To learn to create photo slideshows with movie maker using some
transition effect.
To exercise in writing a description in their own language and in
English as well.
To learn each other’s Christmas customs.
To learn carols and traditional Christmas Songs in English
To exchange Christmas wishes and small gifts so as to start
developing friendly bonds

Pupils worked on Movie Maker to edit the scenes
Pupils converted their clips into 3D using a relative freeware program
or the given by YouTube tool in the red/cyan form.
Pupils watched a stop animation film ( created by me ) to learn what
moving pictures means

Summary: The idea here was for pupils from both schools to learn about the
school subjects their partners have and to work o several school

Targets: To learn their partner’s school subjects
To learn their own school subjects by making a short film
To exercise in both English and their mother tongue by writing
scenarios
To deal with Math's exercises based on that animation film e.g
equalities, fractions decimals, ratios etc.

4th sub-stage: City spots or Let’s go sightseeing.
Summary: The idea here was to search and learn the local history so as to
present some city spots to their partners
Activities: Pupils searched on the internet for clues and took interviews
Pupils wrote scenarios and made storyboards for the relative shots
and edited those shots on Movie Maker

Summary: The idea here was to search and learn the local history so as to
present some city spots to their partners
Targets: To learn the local history
To exercise in writing , translating and describing about a site or
landmark

Stage 3: Long Shot scenes
Summary: This is the stage where students faced different angles of
shots and moving bodies.
Activities: Practised on the long shot scenes (from three different angles -
left, right profile and full face - and steady and moving actors.)
Each team prepared a storyboard with all the above kinds of
shots
Pupils worked with a camera to shoot the above scenes
Pupils worked on the Movie Maker to edit the above scenes -
Titles, transitions, music etc.

Stage 4: : The collaborative movie
Summary: This is the stage where students created the common film
Students worked on a common scenario that had been completed
Activities: and agreed on during the project development . The scenario is a
treasure hunt story in two parts where the first part should be
completed by the French students and the second half by the
Greek students.
Pupils used the storyboards for the various film scenes
Pupils prepared the necessary sounds and music effects.
Pupils worked on the Movie Maker to edit the above scenes -
Titles, transitions, music etc.
Pupils should have prepared posters, advertisements etc. so
as to promote the film
Pupils should have participated in an on-line " Oscar ceremony
" where students from France would give an Academy Award to
Greeks and vice versa
