3. PREFACE
Herewith, we are happy to announce successful completion of the Planning Studio VII – CRP 401 Course in January 2022.
The studio course has started with face-to-face education at the beginning of the 2021-2022 Fall-term, and ended, as it started, by face-to face presentations, individual and group critics
as well as evaluation juries under the risks of Covid-19 Pandemic. Making minor changes in our established routines and practices, and managing uncertainties, we, both students and
instructors, have worked hard to achieve our targets and keep high standards of CRP 401 Planning Studio.
Another characteristic of this challenging term for us is to study the capital city, Ankara by focusing on its sub-regions, urban development potentials, and transformation issues. In order to
develop a land-use plan that addresses specific problems observed in Ankara, we have categorized the metropolitan area into six sub-regions, i.e., Center, West, Southwest, South, East, and
North, and analyzed populations, socio-economic characteristics, existing land-use of built-up areas as well as open areas, river systems and valleys in these sub-regions.
After preliminary analyses and problem definition, we have proceeded to the main stage that involves developing 1/5.000 scale urban development projects. In this digital catalogue, we have
brought together all of these urban development projects prepared by studio members. On one hand, the entire metropolitan area of Ankara is spatially covered by the projects of two-member
groups; on the other hand, variety of urban concepts and topics are entertained.
Conservation of archaeological and historical heritage in Ulus, revitalization of Kızılay and GOP areas, urban transformation in Mamak squatter settlement areas, rehabilitation around İncesu
River, suburban development along urban railway transit system on western corridor, airport city planning near Esenboğa International Airport, regeneration and redevelopment around
university campuses, integration of organized industrial zones with housing development in Sincan, and planning of peripheral areas for sustainable, low-carbon urban development and
climate resilient city are main themes and case-study areas we have focused on.
We will be pleased to hear your opinions and comments on outputs of the CRP 401 Planning Studio. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Feedbacks are highly appreciated and will
help improve senior class studio education.
The CRP401 Studio Instructors
