SOLUTIONS TO
SUPPORT MALAYSIAN
SCHOOL LEADERS

HUMAN CAPITAL IS LARGELY
INFLUENCED BY THE QUALITY OF
EDUCATION IN A COUNTRY.
THEREFORE, REFORM IS NEEDED
IN SCHOOL AND IT SHOULD START
WITH THE SCHOOL LEADERS
STRATEGIES TO ENSURE
EFFECTIVE TRAINING AND
COACHING
Training Strategies Proposed :
1. Pre-Training:
- Needs analysis session can be carried out via vis-à-vis or virtual
form and functions to identify the content of the training and
learners’ dynamic. The input obtained from this session will also
determine relatable content to be delivered during training.
2. Training:
- Diversified learning method i.e blended learning is introduced.
This is also beneficial to school Principals in understanding the
latest methodologies in teaching and learning.
- Cross disciplinary content would encourage principals to break
away from limiting themselves seeking solutions from only the
education field. This would encourage and cultivate a global
outlook towards problem solving.
3. Post Training:
- The effectiveness of the training should be evaluated based on its
efficacy in helping school principals to solve challenges in school.
Therefore, upon the completion of training, school principals are
encouraged to test solutions to the existing challenges they face in
school by using the knowledge obtained during the training.
- Feedback on the effectiveness of the training can then be done
after a given duration when school principals have tested some
solutions derived from the training session.

Coaching Strategies Proposed :
1. Challenge identification session: A 1 to 1 session will be held with
the respective school principal.
2. Working Team recruitment : The school principal can open
recruitment to other school principals in the GSL programme or
work within his own school community.
3. Defining Challenges : The principal define the most prominent
challenge faced after a period of observation and discussion.
4. Identifying solutions : Various solutions are identified and
considered for the said challenge, including possible connection with
external partners. Solutions can also derive from workshops attended.
5. Piloting solution: Solution is tested on a small, selected group of
teachers
6. Implementation: After a period of piloting, the best solution will be
identified and implemented in tackling the challenge identified.
Advantage : School principals who are part of the working team would be able
to gain insights on the strategies implemented for the challenge faced in other
school, and find suitable adaptation to solve similar challenge in their school.

3. Open-ness towards adapting latest learning
methodologies and learning tools
4. High level of trust between administrators and teachers
provide freedom to proactive teachers to innovate
teaching methods and develop themselves
professionally.
What needs to be changed (Challenges)
A. The lack of consultation from teachers before changes
are made in the education system
B. The depletion of relevance between education system
and the real world
C. The lack of autonomy given to Principals from low
performing schools
D. The lack of life-long learning culture and learning
environment in school
E. The lack of ongoing assessment on the quality of
teachers’ performance in school
Challenges B + Opportunities 2 = With appropriate research, needs analysis, program piloting & preparation, rapid changes made in our education system will be
more sustainable and addresses the current needs
Challenges D + Opportunities 4 = With continuous support and acknowledgement from the school principal and administration, teams of pro-active teachers can
be tasked to create learning culture in the school
Challenges B + Opportunities 3 = School principals can empower teams of pro-active teachers in bringing new ways of learning and always ensure that
continuation in support and learning assessment is present

Solutions to supporting school leaders

  • 1. SOLUTIONS TO SUPPORT MALAYSIAN SCHOOL LEADERS By Goh Mun Ting
  • 2. HUMAN CAPITAL IS LARGELY INFLUENCED BY THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN A COUNTRY. THEREFORE, REFORM IS NEEDED IN SCHOOL AND IT SHOULD START WITH THE SCHOOL LEADERS
  • 3. STRATEGIES TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE TRAINING AND COACHING
  • 4. Training Strategies Proposed : 1. Pre-Training: - Needs analysis session can be carried out via vis-à-vis or virtual form and functions to identify the content of the training and learners’ dynamic. The input obtained from this session will also determine relatable content to be delivered during training. 2. Training: - Diversified learning method i.e blended learning is introduced. This is also beneficial to school Principals in understanding the latest methodologies in teaching and learning. - Cross disciplinary content would encourage principals to break away from limiting themselves seeking solutions from only the education field. This would encourage and cultivate a global outlook towards problem solving. 3. Post Training: - The effectiveness of the training should be evaluated based on its efficacy in helping school principals to solve challenges in school. Therefore, upon the completion of training, school principals are encouraged to test solutions to the existing challenges they face in school by using the knowledge obtained during the training. - Feedback on the effectiveness of the training can then be done after a given duration when school principals have tested some solutions derived from the training session. Training: - Diversified learning method - Cross disciplinary content - Relatable content with concrete examples Post Training: - Solution implementation challenge - Refer to coaching strategies - Feedback on the effectiveness of training after a given duration Pre Training: Needs analysis session
  • 5. Coaching Strategies 1. Challenge identification session 2. Working Team recruitment 3. Defining Challenges 4. Identifying solutions to the challenges 5. Piloting solution 6. Implement solution to the mass population Coaching Strategies Proposed : 1. Challenge identification session: A 1 to 1 session will be held with the respective school principal. 2. Working Team recruitment : The school principal can open recruitment to other school principals in the GSL programme or work within his own school community. 3. Defining Challenges : The principal define the most prominent challenge faced after a period of observation and discussion. 4. Identifying solutions : Various solutions are identified and considered for the said challenge, including possible connection with external partners. Solutions can also derive from workshops attended. 5. Piloting solution: Solution is tested on a small, selected group of teachers 6. Implementation: After a period of piloting, the best solution will be identified and implemented in tackling the challenge identified. Advantage : School principals who are part of the working team would be able to gain insights on the strategies implemented for the challenge faced in other school, and find suitable adaptation to solve similar challenge in their school.

  • 7. Current Malaysia’s Education System What currently works (Opportunities) 1. Multilingual syllabus 2. Rapid implementation for changed made at national level 3. Open-ness towards adapting latest learning methodologies and learning tools 4. High level of trust between administrators and teachers provide freedom to proactive teachers to innovate teaching methods and develop themselves professionally. What needs to be changed (Challenges) A. The lack of consultation from teachers before changes are made in the education system B. The depletion of relevance between education system and the real world C. The lack of autonomy given to Principals from low performing schools D. The lack of life-long learning culture and learning environment in school E. The lack of ongoing assessment on the quality of teachers’ performance in school Challenges B + Opportunities 2 = With appropriate research, needs analysis, program piloting & preparation, rapid changes made in our education system will be more sustainable and addresses the current needs Challenges D + Opportunities 4 = With continuous support and acknowledgement from the school principal and administration, teams of pro-active teachers can be tasked to create learning culture in the school Challenges B + Opportunities 3 = School principals can empower teams of pro-active teachers in bringing new ways of learning and always ensure that continuation in support and learning assessment is present
