Surrealism was an art movement that explored the subconscious mind. Artists aimed to capture unconscious thoughts and dreams in their works through techniques like automatic drawing. Major surrealist artists included Max Ernst, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, and Rene Magritte. They were influenced by Freudian psychoanalytic theory and sought to challenge rational thought by bringing unconscious imagery to the surface. Common surrealist techniques involved using everyday objects in unexpected contexts or in a dreamlike, illogical manner.
