Good morning, Ladies and Gentleman. My name is Marek Hyla and I represent e-Learning.pl – company from Poland focusing on new technologies in training and development. I am not a scientist – especially scientist who design robots or artifical intelligence. I am a manager. I am also a guy who love to discuss issues on the verge of people and technology. And at the end – I am also a fan of science fiction. Asimovs books and love science-fictions movies like: „I, Robot” directed by Alex Proyas, „Minority Report” and „A.I.” directed by Steven Spielberg, „Blade Runner” directed by Ridley Scott, „Matrix” by Wahowski Brothers gave me a lot of fuel for todays presentation…
It is hard to predict what will happen in next 50, 20 or even 10 years. Well - „Prediction is hard… especially about the future”. I don’t want to envision with you posibilities which future could bring. I would like to assume that one of the scenarios will eventually happen. And if we assume, that it will happen I would like to ask a couple of questions which, I hope, will foster a discussion or maybe at least create in your mind some „aha” moments…?
First let’s take a look at the speed and depth of technological change. Devices now are smaller, faster, more powerful, more accurate than years before. There are no reasons for stopping these direction. I think that - yes – devices will be even smaller, faster, better. What is impossible now – will be possible in maybe five, maybe 10 or maybe 20 years.
Now take a look at two issues. First of all - there are robots (when I talk about robot I mean both physical machines and bots – programmes which are equiped with some kind of artificial intelligence)… So, first of all there are robots which become more inteligent, more natural in interaction with humans. They are more powerful, they have more abilities (like ability to exchange and analyze information, ability to move), we give them more responsibility. We also trust that they will not make a mistake (like for example autopilots in airplanes). Secondly - there is a big growth of artificial elements supporting abilities of humans. It is not only a matter of technologies used by army (like egzoskeletons). We can now, or will be able in a very near future, to replace our ears, eyes, legs, arms for artificial ones. I can bet that they will give us even better abilities than given by originals… Who of you know the name Oscar Pistorius? This is a sportsman without legs who wanted to compete with athletes on Olympic Games. The Olympic Commitee, for many reasons didn’t agree… One of them was they were afraid that artificial legs will let Oscar win with healthy, strong men. What would be the consequences of such win? So we have two spaces (I mean robots which year by year become closer to humans and humans which year by year become closer to robots). What challenges this situation will bring? Should we treat this situation as a threat or opportunity? There are many areas which should be considered. So let’s take a look on them and start asking questions…
Ethics is the first issue I would like to take into account. How far can we, people, go in improving ourselves to be more skillfull? To be faster? To be smarter? Where is the limit? Will they let us be better as humans, will they let us build better world? Will these improvements be accessible to all, or will they create new ghettos of pupils, students or employees? What kind of implants or embedded devices will be supportive for educational process and what kind of them will be disruptive? I can give you one example. One of the main barriers for education in Africa is lack of glasses for both children and adults. People which are seeing impaired have an enourmous problems to learn – for example they can’t read because they don’t see well. So there is a charity organisation called OneSight which collects used glasses, refurbish them and distribute them in Africa between seeing impaired. So – here is the question: if worse ability to see creates a barrier in learning does it mean that better ability to see creates an advantage in learning? Any ideas? If so – we can just wait for wearable devices and, eventually, implants which will let us see in infrared… Do you think that you would wear one or have implanted such a devices in your head? Did you think about wearing a bluetooth set in you ear twenty or even ten years ago?
OK. – so let’s imagine a situation in which we are tough by robot… Or maybe will be easier to imagine a situation in which we are entering into an educational interaction with a bot represented by an avatar. We have a screen and there is an avatar on this screen. The quality of an avatar is comparable with the quality of representation of real person – but we really don’t know whether it is a person, or a bot… Will we trust to such avatar? Will we trust to the machine if we know that such a machine is a player in the training process? Will we respect such a teacher? Is such a respect necessary? And if not – how will it change the educational process?
What kind of autonomy will machines have in terms of leading us to the right path of competency development? What kind of rights will teacherobot have? Will these rights be comparable with human teacher?
Another bunch of questions is connected with learning process. What kind of changes will we face having unlimited access to information? How the learning process will evolve? In which way embeded devices will change the way we learn? Will we quit learning common knowledge and switch to pure skills education/training? Will the learning process change in the way presented in „Matrix” movie in which people were implanted with knowledge and skills directly to the brain?
The last question… Will we be happy to be tought by machines? Will we know how to involve them into the learning process in order to make it better and not to spoil it?
There are probably much more questions to be asked. I don’t think that we will be able to answer them during this session. I think, however, that even if we could only make a revision of these areas and questions and add other critical issues, list them, have them in mind, it will be valuable outcome of my presentation.
