• Southampton was also significant during the First

In 1919 the Embarkation Commandant of ‘Port Number One’, Brigadier General
Alfred Balfour, thanked Southampton for its “magnificent service” to the nation.

Southampton’s contribution to the war was not solely maritime. Throughout the
