  2. 2. The Ultimate Purpose of Art Art is the center of culture so that once a culture is lost; art is also lost with it. To please God who had been in sorrow since the beginning of the history of mankind. Gives joy for their fellow humans but above all to God.
  3. 3. Beauty  Is beauty only in the eye of the beholder? Prosper Merimee – for Spaniards, a woman to be beautiful must have three dark things. Dark eyes Dark eye-lashes Dark eye-brows
  4. 4. In a certain village in Africa – a woman w/ longest neck is the most beautiful. For Filipinos – white, long hair and pointed nose Anthon Chekhou, the Russian playwright “If someone says you have a beautiful eyes or beautiful hair, there is only one meaning, you do not have that item you think about”.
  5. 5. Beauty is something that is beyond what eyes can see. Beauty is the value that giver (artist) gives and the receiver (appreciator) receives. It is the value of art that stimulates desire of the appreciator. To judge the beauty of a certain work of art, the stimulation it creates to the appreciator is the parameter.
  6. 6. Harmony in Art Art like anything else is a product of different materials or items put together. Achieve beauty if materials or item are arranged or put together.  To come up with beauty, these materials are arranged or fixed in harmony with the purpose of the artist.
  7. 7. There is no beauty if there is no harmony. There is no harmony if materials are not put together to meet the purpose of the artist.

  11. 11. o Lines A. Straight lines commonly used lines both in art & in engineering.  Imply simplicity
  12. 12.  These are impressions of dignity. a. Vertical Line  It implies ambition, authority, majesty & respect.
  13. 13. b. Horizontal Line  These are lines of repose & serenity, reclining person, landscape of body of water
  14. 14. c. Diagonal Line This imply actions & movements.
  15. 15. B. Curved Lines  It suggest grace, movements, flexibility & joyousness.
  16. 16. a. Circle  It is a curve that is loci at all points in the plane & equidistant from a fixed point called center.
  17. 17. b. Lunet A kind of curve line formed like crescent.
  18. 18. c. Oblong  A kind of curve identified by its spherical form & elongation in one dimension.
  19. 19. oForms  A combination of different lines would result to a certain form.  Visual arts are only a combination of lines & forms.
  20. 20. o Colors Is black a color? Color is a property of light so if there is no light there is no color.  Lines and forms give structure to a work of art while colors give life to it.
  21. 21. 3 Attributes of Color: HUE, VALUE & INTENSITY Hue It refers to the name of the color itself. Primary hues: blue, red & yellow Secondary hues: orange, green & violet
  22. 22.  Mixing together two hues would result to a new color. Warm colors: red, orange& yellow  Sources of heat such as sun, light & fire  Imply cheerfulness, joys, actions, life & happiness.
  23. 23. Cool colors: blue, blue-green, blue-violet  They suggest distance, calm, sober restful & inconspicuous.
  24. 24. Value ► This is a relative lightness and brightness of a value for a light and dark, practically, knowledge of the value of colors helps anyone the best effect he wants to achieve. A value that provided below to explain further the meaning of value. Intensity ► It is worth remembering that colors have psychological and emotional bearings. Sometimes are shown on the thickness of the colors being applied. This is apparent in the fauvism form of art. Fauvist like van Gogh expressed emotion by thickening the color of his objects. Red is associated with cheer, warm or happiness. A fauvist to expressed his feeling or happiness thickened the red color. This is referred to as the third element of art known as intensity.
  25. 25. There are still other elements of visual art, series of them are texture, perspective, light and darkness or chiaroscuro. Texture ► This is the visual appearance of things. In sculpture this includes the sense of touch that has something to do with the characteristics of surface. In can be rough or smooth or coarse, shiny or dull and so o. in painting texture represent the skin, clothes, jewelry and other objects of the artist. Perspective ► This is the painters technique to make the object of his art appear as in the distance or in the depth. To draw a highway, painters used two converging lines. The two lines of a railway seem to meet in the distance. Chiaroscuro or light and shadow ► The word is taken from the two Italian word chiaro which means light and oscuro means dark. This is a pictorial representation using light and shade without the use of colors.

Paintings, were believed to have been mustered before the advent to writing were seen on wall of a certain cave of Cro-Magnon France. ❖ Renaissance ❖ Mannerism ❖ Baroque art ❖ Classicism ❖ Romanticism ❖ Gothic art ❖ modernism ❖ Prerequisites to appreciation
