International Children's Book Day is celebrated annually on April 2nd to promote reading among children. Each year, a different country's chapter of the International Board on Books for Young People chooses a theme and invites an author and illustrator from that country to create a message and poster promoting reading to children worldwide. In 2009, Rotarians from several clubs in Georgia read stories to children at local libraries from their countries of origin or other places to celebrate the day and inspire a love of reading.
1. From the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY): Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, April 2nd, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books.
2. Annual Theme Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the sponsor of ICBD. It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading.
