How did the man finally outwit the gentlemen of the jungle?
0R
How did the man secure justice for himself, in ‘The Gentlemen of the Jungle’?
OR
How did the man finally buy peace, in ‘The Gentlemen of the Jungle’?
Answer:After being repeatedly pushed out of his own huts, the man thinks of a
plan to safeguard his rights. He knows that he cannot put up a fight against the
powerful animals. Hence, he made a clever . He builds a hut which is big enough
to accommodate all the animals. As he had expected, all animals, including Mr
Lion, come to the hut and soon started to claim the hut. Making use of the
opportunity, the man sets his hut on fire and along with the hut, all animals
gathered in it are also dead. What the man couldn’t achieve by using muscle
power, he achieves by using brainpower. Thus, the man gets justice by taking law
into his own hands.
Why would mother earth not flee according to the speaker Mudnakudu
Chinnasawamy?
Ans: The speaker feels that trees life is more meaningful and beautiful than
being born as a low caste member in human society. This is because humans
have built barriers among themselves based on their castes. The upper caste
individuals feel that they are superiors and enjoy the privileges. In contrast, the
lower caste people are denied their rights. Besides, this discrimination further
divides human society making the life of the suppressed even more miserable. In
the poem the mother earth wouldn’t flee when the roots of the tree branch out.
The mother earth nourishes and sustains every living organism without any
discrimination. Nature has a wonderful system of coordination and peaceful co-
existence. So, the mother earth wouldn’t flee. This is in total contrast with the
human world where the high caste member runs for a holy bath on encountering
a lower caste individual. The poet finds nature to be a perfect haven to be
without facing any insult and humiliation
III Answer the following in about two hundred words. (6x1=1)
What were the incidents that led the king to build the shrine in ‘Watchman of the
Lake’?
Watchman of the Lake’ by R.K. Narayan enacts the legendary story of the
martyrdom of Mara, an innocent villager of Sakkarepatna situated in the eastern
base of Baba Sudan Hills, in Karnataka. It was once the capital of a king called
Rukmangada.
One afternoon, Mara, looking at the clouds gathering in the sky, realized that it
was going to rain very heavily that evening and called his son back into the hut
and both of them stayed indoors. Soon after that, there was a torrential downpour
and a shrieking storm. Late in the night, when the winds rocked his hut, Mara
came out of the hut and saw the river water flooding the tank and the water level
was a hair’s breadth below the shore. He concluded that the river might heave
and flow over the tank any moment.
Immediately, Mara knelt on the ground and prayed to the Goddess. The Goddess
stood before him, wielding a sword in her hand.
She asked him to move out of the hut at once, as she intended to destroy the tank.
Mara pleaded with her earnestly to save the people, but she refused to grant his
wish. Then Mara requested her to give him an assurance that she would stay her
hand until he returned from the king’s palace after informing him about it. She
granted his wish and Mara hurried to the king’s palace.
When Mara gave the king the message of the Goddess, the king was shocked.
Then Mara told the king that he had a plan to save the tank and the kingdom. He
requested the king to get him executed and make it impossible for him to return.
If he did not return, the Goddess would stay her hand and the tank would not be
destroyed. Though the king was reluctant to do so, Mara persuaded the king to
get him executed for the sake of his people. Thus , the king built a shrine in
honour for the Goddess and Mara also placed the statue of both . The king gave
orders that worship is should be performed on every Tuesday and Friday.

  • 5. Why would mother earth not flee according to the speaker Mudnakudu Chinnasawamy? Ans: The speaker feels that trees life is more meaningful and beautiful than being born as a low caste member in human society. This is because humans have built barriers among themselves based on their castes. The upper caste individuals feel that they are superiors and enjoy the privileges. In contrast, the lower caste people are denied their rights. Besides, this discrimination further divides human society making the life of the suppressed even more miserable. In the poem the mother earth wouldn’t flee when the roots of the tree branch out. The mother earth nourishes and sustains every living organism without any discrimination. Nature has a wonderful system of coordination and peaceful co- existence. So, the mother earth wouldn’t flee. This is in total contrast with the human world where the high caste member runs for a holy bath on encountering a lower caste individual. The poet finds nature to be a perfect haven to be without facing any insult and humiliation

Narayan enacts the legendary story of the martyrdom of Mara, an innocent villager of Sakkarepatna situated in the eastern base of Baba Sudan Hills, in Karnataka. It was once the capital of a king called Rukmangada. One afternoon, Mara, looking at the clouds gathering in the sky, realized that it was going to rain very heavily that evening and called his son back into the hut and both of them stayed indoors. Soon after that, there was a torrential downpour and a shrieking storm. Late in the night, when the winds rocked his hut, Mara came out of the hut and saw the river water flooding the tank and the water level was a hair’s breadth below the shore. He concluded that the river might heave and flow over the tank any moment.
  • 7. Immediately, Mara knelt on the ground and prayed to the Goddess. The Goddess stood before him, wielding a sword in her hand. She asked him to move out of the hut at once, as she intended to destroy the tank. Mara pleaded with her earnestly to save the people, but she refused to grant his wish. Then Mara requested her to give him an assurance that she would stay her hand until he returned from the king’s palace after informing him about it. She granted his wish and Mara hurried to the king’s palace. When Mara gave the king the message of the Goddess, the king was shocked. Then Mara told the king that he had a plan to save the tank and the kingdom. He requested the king to get him executed and make it impossible for him to return. If he did not return, the Goddess would stay her hand and the tank would not be destroyed. Though the king was reluctant to do so, Mara persuaded the king to get him executed for the sake of his people.
