1. Job roles within a record label/ Company
CEO/ President: This is the role that is responsible for
the day to day operations that take place at the
record label.
Vice President: There is usually more than just one
vice president at most record labels, this is so each
vice president can focus on their own allocated
departments such as; business affairs, legal, art, artist
and repertoire, publicity, marketing, sales. Therefore
depending on the size of the record label there can
10+ Vice presidents for one record label.
Business Affairs/Accounting: This is an important role within the industry as the accountant
is responsible for the financial affairs of the record company, they must make sure that
everything is running as it should and that the company’s finances comply with all of the
legal requirements.
Legal: This team are responsible for making the contracts between artists/ bands and the
record label, they will produce the legal documents that bind the record label and artists
together. They will negotiate terms and conditions with the artists or their manager.
A&R (Artists and Repertoire)/ artist development: This role, as a team have three main
responsibilities; spotting talented artists/ groups, overseeing the recording process, and
assisting with marketing and promotion.
Marketing: Marketing representative’s main responsibilities are to develop strategies in
order to sell the albums produced by artists at the record label. The team of marketing
representatives work closely with the director of marketing to plan and create strategies.
This can include such things as promotional displays.
Online/New Media: This is the role in charge of such things as phone marketing, social
networking, and other online campaigns, the team will write a plan on their mobile assets in
order to support an artist or product that is being advertised.
Art Department: Create art work that can be included, e.g. a big role is an album cover
designer. This person is a part of the artist team and they create many different ideas for
album covers and some will be used in the end for the real thing.
Publicity/Promotions: Promotion is a vital role when looking for success for the artist. This is
how they will get bigger in the world and become discovered by the general public, plugging
artists’ talents to the customers that buy their music via the media.
Sales: This is the role in charge of making sure CD’s, DVD’s and digital videos are getting
sales. This is done through making phone calls, mailing letters and other communication
methods.
