2. • Teaching approach: Communicative. It's the best approach to foster communication
and acquire new vocabulary.
• Materials and resources: Chart, photocopies, pictures, video, game.
• Integration of skills: reading, by reading a dialogue about the topic, speaking by
asking questions to a mate and listening by listening to a video.
• Seating arrangement: in a big semi-circle, all together looking at the board.
• Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: there are
many interruptions because the secretary or the preceptors have to give messages to the
students, but maintaining them occupied with work will help them to not loose focus.
• Potential problems students may have with the language: as the Simple Past
(was/were) was taught last class without any inconvenient, I don't expect to have any
problem with the language this time neither.
• Assessment: their ability to talk about past actions and the parts of a house.
Routine (3')
- Good morning everyone! How are you today? I'm very glad, I hope you are glad to see
me again.
- Can anyone tell me the date please? I'll write it on the board.
Warm up (7')
- Today we're going to start by watching a video about two little kids, Candy and Dave,
who are very interested about a doll house. Lets listen to what they have to say!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50bo4DgRnYw
Today we're gonna learn about parts of the house.
Dave - Hi Candy, good morning.
Candy - Good morning, how about this?
D - What's this?
C - It's my doll house, you asked me to bring it over, remember?
D - Oh right! Wow it's heavy.
C - Yeah, well, why did you want this?
D - I wanted to draw a house, I'm gonna draw my own house, so I need to make sure
that I get all the rooms right.
C - Oh, okay!
D - Thanks again for bring this over. Do you wanna help me out?
C - Sure! I play with my doll house all the time.
D - Great! can you tell me what you do first?
3. C - Yeah, lets start! If you wanna draw a house you need a floor, some walls, the roof,
some windows and a door. A house's different parts. lets start with this room, this is the
bathroom, it's where we take our bath, it can have a bath or a shower and usually it has a
towel bar. This is the bedroom, this is where we sleep, it usually has a bed, some
pillows and blankets. This is the dining room, this is where people eat. It's got tables and
chairs where people sit down in. This is the kitchen, this is where we cook our food, it
can have......, stoves and sometimes, even an oven. This is the living room, people
usually have visitors staying here and they come over, it has a couch and a television.
Other houses can have study rooms with lots of books, they can also have computers on
it for research, it's where they usually work.
D - Okay, let me draw all that down, give me a few minutes.
C - Is it done?
D - Done and done. Do you like it?
C - Awesome, I like it, but it would be better in pink.
D - Oh I think blue would be better for my house.
- Well, the kids were talking about the parts of the house, but the doll house it's not
complete, some rooms are missing. For example, this is a place where we keep the car
and some tools, this is the garage!
- Also, there is another place that is missing, this is where we put some plants, flowers
and trees, and it is in the front of our houses, it's the garden!
- Also, there is another part the kids forgot, and it is the place where we go when we
open a window...it is the balcony!
4. - And finally, the last part that is missing is the place we find in a house immediately
when we get in, and it is the hall!
Development (67')
Activity 1 (10')
- Now it's time to practice! I'll give each of you a photocopy with a picture of a house
and its parts, but the names are not in the correct place, so according to the video and
the pictures I showed you, correct the labels.
Activity 2 (20')
- Well, did you know I have a little neighbor, her name is Sophia, and she lives with her
mum, dad, her brother Tomas and she also has a dog. The other day, the family were
talking in the garden, and as I was washing my car in the street, I could listen to all their
conversation. So now you are going to read the conversation I heard, I'll give each of
you a copy, but you'll work in pairs.
Sophia - Mum, can I play in my bedroom?
Mum - Later, now we are in the garden.
S - But yesterday Tomas was in his bedroom playing with friends.
5. M - Yes, and you and your friend were in the living room, watching television. Today
it's a good day to stay outside.
S - The other day was sunny and warm too and dad and Tomas were in the garage fixing
the car. It's not fair. I want to stay inside the house.
M - We were inside the house the whole morning, I was in the kitchen cooking and you
were in the bathroom having a bubble bath!
S - Okay, can I stay in the balcony then? it is outside the house...
M - Yes, but it is the your father's bedroom, and now he's sleeping. Besides, you were
there last night with your brother, looking for starts with the telescope that Saint Claus
gave you.
S - I still think it's not fair. The other day we were all in the garden and Tomas was in
the study the whole day!
M - He was studying for a test. Come on Sophia, stop complaining and give me a hand
with the flowers.
S - Okay mum, as you wish.
- Now I'll write some sentences on the board. Please, copy them in your folders and say
if they are true or false according to the conversation between Sophia and her mum.
When a sentence is false, please correct it below.
a. Tomas was in his bedroom yesterday with his father.
b. The other way was stormy and cold.
c. The other day Tomas and his dad were in the garage fixing the car.
d. The other day, Sophie was in the bathroom and her mum in the kitchen.
e. Last night, Sophia was in the balcony with her mum.
f. The other day, the family were in the garden, except Tomas who was in the study.
Activity 3 (15')
- Lets continue working in pairs. Some of you are going to be Sophia and the other is
going to be her mum. In order to complete the chart I'm giving you, you have to answer
your mate some questions. For example, where were you last night? I was in the living
room.
Where were you... I was....
last night?
yesterday evening?
this morning?
last Sunday evening?
last Friday night?
on Monday at 5 p.m.?
last Saturday morning?

Activity 4 (10')
- Now I want to tell you a story I heard. Five blocks from my house, there is a big
house, their owners are rich, and the other day I heard that a very expensive statue is
missing. It was in the dining room until 4 o'clock, but then it disappeared! So the police
is trying to find the thief, and a policeman called Mark made a few questions to the
6. suspects. However, to find out what did they say, we need to complete the dialogue with
the words that are in the box. I'll give each of you a copy.
Where were you? was Mrs. Swan
Was Mrs. Swan in the garden?
were you in the house?
When were you in the garden?
Policeman - Mr. Swan, ...........................................................?
Mr Swan - No, I wasn't. I was...I was in the garden.

Diane - Emm...yes, I think she was...

Policeman - Thank you, Mr. Jones.

of the house and circle them with color pen.
