CHAPTER ONE
THE TRANSFORMATIONAL TEACHING
TRAINING AND PRACTICE
FUNDAMENTALS
[I]N our Way of martial art we know that our deepest fear is not that we are
ignorant and inadequate. But rather, it is in the fact of not embracing the
incredible knowledge, truths and teachings that have the immense potential
to unleash within us, the power that can forever change us beyond measure.
Therefore, in seeking the truth in darkness becomes our feeble point of
content….”
THE TRANSIENT BEGINNINGS IN
MARTIAL ART(S).
(ICHIJI TEKINA)
In the matters of martial arts the point of
perceptions and standard practice of Oikado
is that the depth, meaning and essence of
learning should lead to transformances in the
context of the
 Mind
 Emotions
 Heart
 Spirit
 Body
Which then would have a precipitated
potential and capacity to empower the
practitioner morally, intellectually, spiritually
and socially. This poignant view takes into
account the fact that this is a long term and
intricate process that which intensely
requires the special division and critical
attention by the practitioner(s) into the
aspects of;
 Training
 Practice
 Research
 Application
Rather than to entirely focus on the
conventional mechanical ritual of the
techniques, form, strategy and combat. The
point of tremendous influence and view about
transformational teaching, training and
practice is that the aspects of the techniques,
forms and strategy and combat are basically
the essential tools, structures and signposts
that must be learned, mastered and
transcended into the higher levels of
conscious manifestation, participation of
body, mind, heart and spirit. Thus giving
transformed perceptions and perspectives
that can holistically give the potential of;
 Personal empowerment,
consciousness and effective
participation in all matters of life and
the Universe.
Conversely, such practitioners would
ultimately achieve a congruent state of
having the quality of pervasive, beneficial
and influential mind, heart and spirit that
would permeate into the whole environment

of life through ascendances into the higher
realms of;
 Understanding
 Awareness
 Appreciation
 Definement
 Sensitivity
 Perception
 Placement
 Integration
 Application
 Participation
Which faculty is very rare when one is
mechanical (technical) in entirety.
Transformational approach to martial arts is
more inclined and motivated towards the
removal and reduction of the conditions of
under or skewed teaching, misphilosophy,
misconceptions and skewed developments in
the contextual art of the practitioner.
Basically the fathom of this essence is
holistically grounded than selectively
orientated and predesigned. Once the
negative results have been minimized, the
profound and critical developments and
impacts will emerge from the converging
point of such transformance, which would
promote and invigorate the essence of;
 Development of Intelligence
 Development of Service
 Development of Discipline
 Development of Equimmunity
 Development of Moral Choice
 Development of Vibrancy
 Development of Dynanism
 Physical Development
 Mental Development
 Emotional Development
 Intellectual Development
 Exponential Development
 Experiential Development
 Spiritual Development
 Social participation and
personal mastery. And advancement to the
fact of transcendence to heights and
measures that eventuate into the attainment
of pure freedom. That is, from their rigid
conventional adherences without losing their
form, substance and essence, but leading to
the highest concept of true art and artless,
thence attaining the trident essence.
Once the transcendent essence has been
attained then the significance of the
technique, form, strategy and combat
become a point of reference only rather than
the fact of imperatives because in this
condition the practitioner would certainly be
in the state of the higher
 Mind
 Feeling
 Perception
 View
 Precence
 Principle
 Influence
 Spirit
Because the physical dimensions would have
been subsumed by the internal dimension
and prospective inner novations of immense
measure and height. In essence,
transformational learning and practice goes
further to show that the centre focus of the
interbalance between the aspects of;
 Concentration on the physical
techniques, forms, strategies and
combat which must then be
intercepted with the essentials of
philosophy, morality, spirituality and
social consciousness and
participation.
THE POTENTIAL NATURE AND MINDSET
OF STUDENT(S).
(ZUNO)
When these developments had been
initiated, cultivated and experienced within
the landscape of martial art learning, such
practitioners would certainly attain a good
point of leverage and the advantage of
immense beneficialness, expanseness and
wholeness. Therefore, in the standpoint of
Oikado the students and the Sensei must
think and function outside the box, explore
and attain the condition of emancipation from
the rigid circumference of conventionality by
becoming innovative, creative, experiential
and pervasive, exponential in perceptions
and perspectives within the potent
characteristics of their true art and martial
arts and pervasive participation. Therefore,
hence manifesting and exponentiating their
superb fabrics and qualities of;
 Originality
 Creativity
 Artisticness
Rather than to be the products of
mechanical, ritualistic conformity and
conventionality within and lethargy their own
art and style. In the persuit of this objective,

the pervasive terrain and frame work of such
teaching, training, practice and learning is
depicted along these lines and without
prejudice to their collaboration and
supplement action.
It is adverted that, when given the above
framework and the approach being in place, it
will set itself as a sringboard of which quality
and interactive training could be achieved
with the main point of pervasity and depth of
cultivation in the practitioner, which will
always and reasonably be stimulated and
guaranteed in the context of;
 Training
 Practice
 Application
in the holistic context. When such holistic
transformances are experienced and evident
in the practitioner, then the impossible
happens in that, the ordinary student will
definitely become a transcendent person with
resourced faculty, personality and character
in the realms of martial arts, life and the entire
world.
On the closing note and without going into
depths of merits and demerits of this
approach, the important point to realize and
mention is that the designs and intentions of
transformational training, practice and
learning are elaborated below in the following
terms;

 Such a process and approach does
not want to overshadow, displace,
undermine, substitute or subsume the
existing methodologies and
approaches in the martial arts
teaching, but rather to critically
engage creative and exponential
thinking and to supplement same and
give another considered viewpoint in
the context of elevated points of
difference.
 Such an approach and method is
aimed at providing an alternative
viewpoint, standpoint and concepts
essential to the comprehensive
martial arts awareness and effective
participation.
 Such an approach and process
should ultimately provide the
practitioner with the essential
intellectual and perceptual freedom of
the essence of concept, experience,
application and exponentiation within
the critical points of centeredness,
roundness, fluidity, placement and
wholeness. Rather than to fossify in
the superficiality of the structures of
the techniques, form, strategy and
combat as emphasized through the
conditions of;
 Conformity
 Conventionality.
Essentially, the emphasy is on the pervasive
and embracing landscape of;
 Exponentially
 Creativity
 Originality
 Transcendent Essence
Conversely, the process of dynamic inquiry,
implementation and articulation will be
initiated in the ambit of scrutinizing the
pervasive nature and essence of the masters
and the teachers of the martial arts in the
ideal and secular contexts because in the
ultimate essence in the martial arts, there is
more to it than that which ordinarily meets the
eyes.
THE TRUE WAY OF THE MASTERS
(SHUTOKU)
In beginning, the Masters of Martial Arts were
basically the ordinary student(s) who
underwent effective training and learning from
their own teachers, the very teachers who
acted and stood up as their role models in
life. At the very point of being student(s),
they were highly inspired, motivated and
committed into whatever that was being
taught and permitted to be trained and
practiced in their way of the martial arts.
Essentially, these became individuals who
were engrossed the with earnest passion,
desire, willpower and quest to transcend the
parameters of the;
 Techniques
 Style
 Form
 Concept
by going deeper and beyond the very
appearance of what constituted their tradition.
Therefore, in the persuit of this ideal, task and
goal they went far beyond the structures of
their system by penetrating the deeper
dimensions and realms of the mind and the
spirit. Consequently, they transcended the
definements, measures and confinements of
the structures of techniques and style, and in
the same vent they acquired the grand
dispensation and factors of;
 Depth
 Centering
 Meaning
 Roundness
 Wholeness
 Transcended Intelligence
 Transcended Focus
 Transcended Emotions
 Transcended Application
 Transcended Wisdom
 Transcended Participation.
As they delved into the very depths of
meanings, essence and formlessness.
Thereby, attaining a unique condition and
state of viewing, understanding and
manifesting their martial art from an elevated
point of true heart, true mind and true spirit,
which factors became characterized with the
immense stature and quality of;
 Simplicity.
 Balance.
 Pervacity.
 Participation.
 Humility.
 Harmony.
 Essence.
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
5
 Mindfulness
 Patience
 Depth.
 Virtue.
 Presence.
together with other incidental attributes.
Conversely, to them the point of martial arts
ceased to be perceived and approached as a
mere factor of methodology, style and
technique but rather, the devine process of
holistic function and participation enjoining
the purest elements of;
 Mind.
 Heart.
 Spirit.
 Body.
 Nature.
 Creation.
 Energy.
 Universe.
which elements all existing interdependently,
in harmony, in balance and in wholeness.
Furthermore, they becoming the individuals
who abandoned the elements of self concept,
ego, illusions and fragmented mind, thus and
inevitably acquiring a true state of;
 Great Mind.
 Great Heart.
 Great Spirit
which became translated and manifested in
the ambits of love, humility, accommodation,
simplicity and peace. Therefore with this brief
description, the student(s) are urged and
motivated to place their higher vision, heart
and mind into having a commitment in their
study and training, and try to emulate the
unique and grand achievements and virtues
of the masters by following in their footsteps
in;
 Body.
 Mind.
 Emotions.
 Heart.
 Spirit.
And consequently and so that overtime, they
can attain the incredible condition and
dispensation of beneficial essence, vision and
profoundness in life and in the Universe,
which they can share and serve humanity
with. [O]nce the experience of
consciousness is realized, one would never
be the same again. When one is aware of his
giftings, unique purpose and worth, he should
go out into the world to serve and fulfill his
own purpose for his own generation and
position in the Universe…."
THE VOCATIONAL STATURE OF THE
SENSEI.
(SHIMEIKAN)
When all the preceding qualities have been
taken in and internalized, it will become very
much clear that a Sensei is the second best
in position from the master and to the
student(s) because he is basically the bridge
between the master(s) and the student(s).
Wherefore, what it actually takes to become a
Sensei certainly entails a plurality of
ingredients and factors including the technical
know-how. Therefore, the factual ability to
merely know how to kick and punch or
winning a tournament is not an absolute
defining criteria and character of a Sensei.
Once more, one should have a point of higher
knowledge and depth understanding of the
apparent and simple truths that are inherent
in the martial arts. Therefore, with such an
ability and quality the individual will be poised
to realize that there is an immense and vast
difference in the point and fact of just knowing
the techniques, other than the subtle
philosophy and wisdom behind all these
which is inherent in the estate of martial arts.
However, some individuals will unwisely and
definitely claim to have the attitude and
aptitude of true understanding and yet, not
having acquired the distilled remarkability of
going beyond the apparent facets of such
knowing and understanding, which faculty
and fabric is an essential element in the
constitution of the Sensei. The martial arts
essence is consisting of the pervasive depth
and meaning that which can and does elude
anyone who approaches it with a superficial
intellect, zeal, attitude and compartment of
the ego. Therefore, it is important and
obligatory to be able to distinguish and grasp
the subtle grail, which is contained within the
subtle essence of the martial arts. The
pervasity and immensity of martial arts should
be appreciated and absorbed with pure and
open heart and mind, which are substantive
characteristics towards the making of a true
Sensei. This very fact stands out as it is and
uncompromised at all. Therefore to persist in
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
6
the culture of such denials, distortions and
compromises is untanable and unfortunate,
especially when it comes to the tenacity and
tenets of development of the human mind
and spirit in the martial arts.
In view of the above, it is thus become
possible to encounter three types of Sensei’s
who are:
 [Those] of small and shallow
mind(s) and absolutely content and
confined within their technical abilities
and conformance, and ego.
 [Those] of great mind(s) and
certainly armed with broader
perceptions, vision and integrity,
perceiving all things in the pervasive
potential, ingenuity and wholeness.
 [Those] of skewed and arrogant
mind(s) who are obsessed with
personal ego, ambition and self
interest at the expense of holistic
viewing, adherence, participation and
teaching of martial arts in its
trueness. Thence, their mind(s) is
absolutely limited to the
circumference of their ego than
martial arts.
The Sensei(s) of great mind are very few and
rare indeed, because these are exceptional
individuals who are never content with the
platitude of a single style, concept,
conventionality, and constraining philosophy.
They actually go beyond the very style and
concept in order to attain the highest point of
tapestry, essence of synergy, placement,
complementation in order to reach the
panacea of truth and conscious perspectives
in martial arts. On the other hand, those of
small mind, to them the concepts and issues
of innovation, transformance of perspectives,
complementation, synchronization and
exploration of concepts, techniques and
principles is not acceptable because more
than not, such an adventure constitutes an
immense obstacles to their limited view and
potential in the substantive nature of martial
arts. In essence they lack the quality of
resourceful faculty, expanded mind and
exponential intelligence. This unfortunate
position is basically founded in the fact of fear
to embrace the unknowable change of mind,
heart and spirit. Basically, to absorb
innovative thinking and mind, cause fear in
them, because such an attitude has the
powerful potential of exposing their point of
ignorance which then is disturbing to their
comfort zone. Fundamentally, the very
process becomes gnawing and judge
mentality, questioning their outworn and
upheld notions of technical superiority and
capacity within their respective martial art
style. Such an attitude and repose is
depriving both the concerned Sensei and
prospective students, in that it robs or
deprives the student(s) of the quality of
exponential learning, growth and technical
diversity in the dynamics of martial arts,
because an apple seldom falls away from the
tree. It is through this argument and point of
view that students are urged to be
consistently on the lookout, alert and above
all, to seek what is most beneficial to
themselves in terms of technical and artistic
growth and advancement in the ways of the
martial arts. Rather than to engage and
adhere to the persuasions of name and brand
of the style and reputations of the person(s)
because in life, one should not judge the
depth of a well by merely looking at the
surface of the water.
THE VARIOUS ROLES OF THE SENSEI.
(YAKU)
The Sensei as an ordinary person who has
social and professional obligations, in that he
has a personal, social and professional life
which he must attend to and at the same time
consider the interests of the martial arts
students who are under his care. Basically, a
Sensei should play various roles in that, to
the student(s) he stands out as a role model,
as an instructor, father, mother, friend,
counselor, healer, mentor and guardian.
Thence and foremost, he must have all the
capacity and confidence to play all these
roles, and to secure the confidence of his/her
own students and the community. The issue
of assuming the position of a Sensei should
not be a fact of an event, but rather a process
that which is infused with the primordial
interest of rendering services to other people
without favour, judgementality, anticipation of
reward and self-seeking objectives.
It is an office that requires self-sacrifice,
understanding, empathy, compromise,
compassion, generosity, humility and
beneficial service to the vast interests and
needs of the students. Therefore, the motive

7
for profit, fame, popularity and self-ego
actually defeat the fundamental essence of
being a Sensei of martial arts and the
profound principle of “to serve and to be of
service”.
[L]earn to do and to give all that which is
within your own giftings and vision without a
measure of qualification, for they are Mine. I
have gifted everything in the Universe,
differently and according to its measure, and
for unique purposes ….”
The inclination and viewpoint of making profit,
fame and other objectives of self seeking,
naturally and actually impairs, causes painful
contradictions and discords within the realm,
percepts and principles of martial arts.
Martial arts is very much beyond what has
been pointed out in the above, its all about;
 Self Mastery
 Self Knowledge
 Compassion
 Accommodation
 Self Perfection
 Unselfishness
 Selfless Service
 Humility
[T]hose who are conscious of my OWN
IMMENSITY will not fail to realize that in
serving others they actually serve ME. For I
am the total manifestation of all things. They
would be content beyond measure in my
dwelling for in their service greater than their
life is the sacrifice…”
THE ASPECT OF PERSONAL
PHILOSOPHY
(TSEKUGAKU)
Proceeding from the above mentioned
dispensation, its the essential vein of self
application towards the goal of indiscriminate
serving and helping of humanity. The very
humanity that which is all around oneself.
Therefore, the whole point is essentially
about who you are, and your relationship with
all that which is within and around you in the
whole Universe. This a profound factor that
which must be ingrained in the quality and
character of the Sensei’s motives, intentions
platitude of thinking, perspectives, objective
and personal philosophy. If not, what then is
the whole point and merit of becoming the
Sensei of the martial arts?
Basically a Sensei in the strict meaning and
hallmark, is a teacher who is ingrained with
the qualities of being a helper,
inspirer/motivator, healer, counselor, friend,
moulder, mentor and guardian, mother and
father of the student (deshi). It is an extra
ordinary office of noble trust, simplicity,
knowledge, wisdom, compassion, humility,
generosity, strength and guidance. ALL
geared towards the development of the
student(s) character, morals, mind and spirit
through the holistic approach and
participation of the;
 Mind
 Heart
 Emotions
 Body
 Spirit
Therefore it should not be permitted to
become an office of pomposity, arrogance,
self seeking and discords of money making
and seeking of positions and fame. If these
traits are allowed, then that would inevitably
be the dilution and distortion of the essence
of this remarkable office, and the spiritual
nature that is inherent within it. Thence in
the persuit of this grandeur it is stated thus:
[B]y seeking the grail of perfection and
wisdom in the masters, it is then that we can
attain the wisdom of being true and luminated
teachers, and gaining the glimpse of what is
ordinary untold, in being what we ought to be
……”
It is therefore, crucial that all the aspirants
should make a point of reference to the
inherent nature, virtues and characteristics,
and essential qualities found in the masters,
in order to achieve an adequate balance
between what is best and worthy to pursue in
the context and appropriate perceptions and
perspectives. It is also vital to critically
examine the basic purpose of ones
intentions, potentials and ultimate objectives
before one can respond to the callings of the
office of the Sensei. This task of self
examination is very important and will ensure
that one can avoid assuming same with the
falsehood of mind, intentions and character.
Otherwise, one would certainly miss the
essential meaning of depth, meaning of truth
and meaning of the pervasive morality,
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
8
conscience and spiritually inherent in the
martial arts dimensions. It is definitely
through the exercise and process of re-
evaluation physically and mentally, morally
and spiritually that an individual can
comfortably stand with a conscience,
consciousness and capacity that is not
wanting or compromised as a Sensei, and
shall further be armed with the competency to
execute the intrinsic dispensations of this
scared position. [I]N the way of this truth
know much about your heart than your mind,
and be the best of what you could be and
serve the Universe according to the power of
the gifting that you have. Then the Universe
will celebrate in you and you will be magnified
in your worth and purpose….” From this
overview of the self then the typical type of a
Sensei that you wanted to be shall inevitably
emerge and manifested in the true point of
conscious definement and substance.
Though sometimes, such an ambition and
state of affairs may cause a great and wider
discrepancy between the truth that is inherent
in the Ways of martial arts and to that which
is upheld as one’s own truth and self
perception.
THE SPECIAL DUTY OF THE SENSEI.
(ZEIKIN)
On the whole, the Sensei is the soil with the
necessary knowledge of martial arts and has
the obligation to teach and to ensure that his
students do attain a higher level of
intellectuality, exponentiality and proficiency
in the skills of techniques, philosophical
articulation and understanding. Further more,
in the pursuit of this enterprise and objective,
he should also demonstrate impartial
commitment, devotion and genuine concern
in the welfare of all his students and this be
combined with a full poise of responsibility
towards all in his charge and dojo. This is a
duty that is done without favour and/or
expectation of rewards whatsoever. A Sensei
must not and should not under any
circumstance endeavor into the habit or
tendency of distorting the aspirations,
principles, percepts, truths of martial arts in
order to please someone, to meet his or
someone’s personal dispositions and/or
expectations. Essentially, this lethargic
teaching and mis-understanding of things will
inevitably cascade with tremendous long term
impacts, socially, intellectually, morally,
mentally, physically and spiritually to those
that the alleged teaching was meant to
please or militate against. The aspects of
truth in the martial arts is more than
emphasized because it is the vital organ and
powerful essence of martial arts.
In as much therefore that, the Sensei should
at least and at best avoid the issues that will
ultimate result in the aspect of misguided
teaching, misplaced teachings or under
teaching of the student(s). Once such a
condition of dysfunctional teaching is
ingrained, it would become irreversible and
very much be of detriment and disadvantage
to the students. It is therefore prudent and
essential that, in the teaching of any or every
principle, precept and proposition, all the the
students must be encouraged to do their
indispensable research and contribution into
the subject matter, so that the state of
collective engagements and comprehensive
learning, participation, exchange and
development can or is attained grandly
without a point of bias, skewedness and
prejudice to vital interests and truths.
The Sensei must consciously alert his
students about the adverse effects of myopic
perceptions and thinking especially when it
comes to the fact that, any technical dexterity
and achievement in the tournaments does not
automatically qualifies and instills an
individual to acquire the status of a Sensei. A
true Sensei is more than the above
definements of the technique, style and
tournament because he is an absolute
embodiment and repository of the remarkable
and distinguished attributes of;
 Wisdom.
 Compassion.
 Knowledge.
 Understanding.
 Demeanor.
 Selflessness.
 Truth
 Silence.
 Love
 Intellectuality.
 Observation.
 Humility.
 Simplicity.
 Experience.
 Mindfulness.
 Awareness.
 Ingenuity.
 Pervasiveness.
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
9
 Patience.
 Peace.
With the above qualities and hallmark, the
candidate will have the profound advantage
of being an asset and mirror to the whole
society and much more transformed beyond
the ordinary facets of his being, and
conversely shall achieving the essential point
of the “true knowing”. The state of true
knowing is very much beyond the apparent
scope of ordinary dimensions of appreciating
things because it is consistent with
enlightenment. It is granted that, some
Sensei’s are of the compelling view that
students should definitely be superior in the
scope of combat and techniques before they
become a Sensei. Those who don’t excel
shouldn’t be considered to qualify for the
position of the Sensei. This viewpoint may be
sound and provisionally valid but subject to
and it contains extreme limitations. The fact
of combat ability is not entirely an exclusive
determining factor more so that, such a state
is dependent on the physiological attributes
rather than the mental and intellectual
cultivation and enlightenment, which are very
crucial in the martial arts learning process.
Secondly, the fulcrum of martial arts is not
entirely based on combatative approach, but
rather on the mental and spiritual approach
whence the coherency of the body, mind and
spirit are in full participation and at best play
in order to acquire wholeness in the
individual’s life, training and practice. This
approach is quite crucial because it does not
merely emphasize one plane of function over
others. However, should the holistic
approach be undermined and discarded that
would inevitably results in an uncomfortable
platitude and environment of which either,
under teaching and misguided teaching takes
precedent and predominance over the aspect
of holistic comprehensive teaching and
participation in the Way.
[D]O not ever undermine, deny and constrain
the unique gifts that the Universe has given
you. Effect them with the commitments of
truth and heart because their purpose and
significance of their whatever end in the
Universe is seldom known….”
THE SPECIAL NATURE AND CHARACTER
OF THE SENSEI.
(SHEISHITSU)
Another viewpoint that is very much
expounded and espoused by some of the
Sensei(s) is that of demonstrating the fact of
popularity, publicity and fame before one can
be deemed to be a Sensei. These aspects
are good to cherish but and yet, what is their
penultimate objective and how do they fit and
suit or reconcile with the intrinsic grail of
martial arts? If these traits are compatible
with spiritual and moral grail of martial arts
then they are fine. However and candidly
stated, there is absolute doubt that they do in
any way or manner with the ways of martial
arts. It must be pointed out and emphasized
that the correct and true teaching must be
adhered to, otherwise the wrong impressions
and misconceptions will be developed and
cascaded to the novice, and innocent minds
who would inter-alia come to believe and
emulate that which is wrong.
[T]hat which has reached the absolute point
of great experience and embracement of the
higher consciousness in the Way, does not
need the mundane illusions of honour in
order to become of their worth. Their worth
and substance become derived in the fact of
merging and celebration within the
Universe...”
Given the aforegoing it becomes quite clear
that, the background of the purpoted Sensei
in relation to his received teachings and
learning, his depth and latitude of the
appreciation of the philosophy behind and
within the martial arts, become critically
prominent and crucial. The essentiall
ingredients that will determine or decide on
the pattern of influence and scope of impact
on the modality and depth of meaning,
direction and essence of his martial art
teaching to his students.
However and notwithstanding the above, a
true Sensei shall not endevour to allow his
own student(s) to become like him but rather
that they go beyond the context of what he is,
by emulating the best of their own originality,
excellence and brilliance.
[I]N the substance of true teaching of Our
Way, it is not best to permit that the masters
be imitated by their student(s). Each must
not compare itself and its worth with the other
because they would loose focus on
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
10
themselves. But rather they must
acknowledge that each one is gifted with the
uniqueness of mind, body and spirit, and
must celebrate oneself in that condition of
uniqueness….”
Such a Sensei would utmostly endeavour
with due diligence, effort and concern that the
students do eventually discover who they are
and their worth, what they are capable of in
terms of their own potentials in life.
[I]T is truly necessary that one should fully
appreciate and be grateful of his own unique
gifts, in this condition he would be
comfortable and satisfied with who he is. It is
only then that he can attain the incredible
point and leverage of alignment,
complementation and celebration of oneself,
with people and things. Therefore, one
should never compare himself with others but
his own potentials and destiny thus he would
have the greatness of inner worth and
peace….”
Prominently, the Sensei will edge forward and
agitate that such student(s) should act and
live in all that they can be in their lifetime, in
terms of their dreams, academics, social and
economic goals within the context and scope
of truth, understanding, humility and dignity.
[I]n honouring one’s teacher its not only about
the fact of giving gold and praise but rather of
giving him the gift of being the best of what
you have become, more than what you
were….”
The true Sensei will go further to encourage
through his teachings of the way of truth that,
the student(s) should understand and
appreciate their essence and be empowered
to serve other human beings without favour
nor reward because that is an inherent duty
of the martial artist. All the teachings of the
Sensei should be geared and focused with
absolute clarity, purpose, meaning, depth and
empowerment so that in so doing he does not
concase or limit the truth in order to serve his
own ulterior reasons or objectives nor
enhance his ego-status:
[T]he rewards of great and true teachings of
the Way are true in the manifestation of what
is not so much in the glitter on the person .…
but rather on the humble knowledge that they
are doing their best to progress in life with
true knowing of the truth, and according to
the percepts of our Ways, and what a
satiating feeling to know and to be….”
[I]t is better to be remembered for what you
have done for people in your lifetime through
your selfless service. It is in serving humanity
and the creation that one can be of great
service to God and the Universe….”
THE IMPACT OF THE SENSEI ON THE
STUDENT(S).
(EIKYO)
It is quite clear that student(s) should benefit
more from his Sensei not only in terms of
fighting ability but rather in the supreme state
of transformance. They must attain the
capacity of “being”, emotionally, morally,
intellectually, mentally, spiritually, physically
and socially by being transformed within the
embrace of wholeness in life. Therefore, just
as a Sensei sees himself in the master, the
student also sees himself in the Sensei
because in the ultimate end both are
significantly one. IF NOT, THEN WHAT
WOULD BE THE POINT AND THE WORTH
OF HAVING A Sensei in one’s life? It is on
this premise and rationalization that students
should be made aware and be urged to
consistently seek a teacher who will truthfully,
honestly and diligently provide them with the
provisions of fulfillment development, and
advancement, intellectually, physically,
mentally, morally and spiritually rather than to
follow the brand-mark, mundane reputation
and rhetoric based on the sentiments and
superficiality of style.
One the other hand, the Sensei is also urged
and encouraged that in his teachings of the
martial arts precepts and principles, should
invoke the intensed desire, willingness,
sacrifice and attitude to serve and to be of
service to anyone who comes to him because
the consideration of service is upfront and
compelling in the martial arts. In so doing,
the Sensei and the students would definitely
discover the incredible underlying secret of
the grail of humility, service and compassion
to all mankind. Furthermore, they would
attain the depth of understanding and
endowment of expansiveness of meaning,
centering, depth and wholeness that which is
constantly within and around us:
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
11
[I]t is not the truth that will make you whole, it
is how you fit into it and make it your own
point of ultimate essence and tranformances
in the wonders of the Universe….”
[Y]ou have no beginning nor the end, in the
fact of defining yourself in the present
potential becomes the greatest impediment
towards your own incredible vastness in the
Universe, Therefore, transcend the barriers
of your own ignorance and ego in order to
attain and see what otherwise has been
considered to be the impossible….”
In this respect the Sensei whether is great or
small, must have a common duty, common
sense, sincerity and passion to keep, impart
and cherish this wondrous knowledge and
legacy of martial arts, especially for those
who are coming behind us bonded with the
ultimate search and quest of this wonderful
legacy.
[I]t is important to do the very best that one
can do for others, humanity and the Universe
because we were all born to manifest the
essence of God within us. In so doing, we
unconsciously inspire and give to others the
power to do the same….”
Therefore both the Sensei and student(s)
should fully appreciate the fact that the above
condition can only come about when and if
there are inner changing’s within our
perceptions and perspectives about each
other and nature and our position in the
whole Universe. Conversely, a true and great
Sensei will be measured and found in the
power of knowledge, and its manifestation in
the quality of the:
 Mind
 Heart
 Emotions
 Consicence
 Spirit
THE SPECIAL ENQUIRY BY THE SENSEI.
(SHITSUMON)
Whenever the Sensei is faced with the task of
imparting the knowledge and the skills to the
students, he should have his mind and
faculties focused on these salient issues;
 What knowledge and wisdom should
appropriately be imparted in order to
meet the general expectations of
each student, and what will generate
the fundamental point of awareness
and exponentiation in them?
 What are the best approaches and
the skills that must be adopted in
order to meet the above objective,
and that such an approach will it
meet the general anticipated
standards within the time frame.
Above all, that the style of the Sensei
will it ultimately match and
compliment that of the student’s
unique personal style(s). In this very
context, the Sensei must be honest
and genuinely identify and accept his
personal weaknesses and
shortcomings.
 What are the best and effective
methods of learning, training and
practice that should be put in place,
modified and permitted within the
time frame, which also can respond
to the immediate potentials needs,
expectations and situations between
the Sensei and the student(s).
THE ASPECT OF PERSONAL MASTERY
(SHUTOKU)
The Sensei must also bear in mind the fact
that the student(s) that she is teaching and
training must ultimately attain the point and
condition of personal power and personal
mastery within the realm of their martial arts.
Therefore this condition in essence entails
the fundamental ingredients of;
 The innate will and intensions to
acquire and expand the individual’s
potentials and capacities to go
beyond the current upheld self-
perceptions and abilities.
 The immense desire and the
intensions to transcend the
weaknesses and portals of
inadequacy and ignorance. Thereby
attaining a transformational point and
momentum of depth of curiosity,
power of awareness, application,
pervasiveness, and broad measure of
exponential thinking, function and
experience.
 The potential and the experience of
being emancipated, inspired and

12
directioned by the profound teachings
and example of the Sensei, from the
condition and quagmire of ignorance,
confusion and indecision.
 The desire to attain the penultimate
conviction, position of view and
influence, and powerful vision about
the ultimate transcendent
expectations and outcome, in the
whole dimensions of the Universe.
THE ATTAINMENT OF PERCEPTIONS
(RIKAI)
Once the above mentioned have been put in
place, in order and channeled into the correct
line of in built perceptions, perspective and
inspiration, the Sensei should further advise
the student(s) about the condition of
abandoning the facets of;
 Internal and preconceived notions,
ideas, assumptions and misplaced
perceptions and priorities.
 Proscranations and self-defensive
notions, and intellectual arrogance
and egoism.
Which factors are essentially inhibiting,
limiting and frustrating the progressive action
towards the attainment of sincere cultivation
in the fact of knowledge, experience, wisdom
and skill of martial arts. Conversely, the
Sensei and the student(s) should work on the
common understanding, common ground and
common vision and purpose, and both must
mutually agree and adopt a landscape that
can produce and unleash the hidden and
immense potentials of the student(s) by
stancing on the correct;
 Formats.
 Long-term objectives.
 Formalities.
 Short-term goals
Upon which to work on in order to achieve a
point of desired or intended empowerment
and expontial mastery in the practical way.
Furthermore, the Sensei and the student(s)
must compliment each other in their endeavor
to set down the common ground for the
emergence and prevalence of the dimensions
of;
 Insight and awareness.
 Perspective and perceptions.
 Personal knowledge and
empowerment.
 Synergistic relationships between the
internal reality and the outer reality.
 Exponential and transformative
thinking and pro-action.
 Identification and definitions of the
critical and crucial priorities pertinent
to the fact of one’s path in life.
Given the above, the Sensei will certainly
have the leverage and vantage to produce
the student(s) who have the abundant mind
that which has the tremendous potential and
capacity to:
 Achieve the fundamental new
perception and retraining that
abandons the parochial style interest,
mindset and image by adopting an
immense and pervasive viewpoint
and embracement of the inherent
diversity.
 Celebrate the factual, distinctive
diversities of the systems of the
martial arts without losing the sight of
the underlying synergetic essence
and commonality, thus transcending
beyond the feebling confines of
sentimentalism of one’s style.
THE POINT OF ABUNDANCY
(HOFUSA)
Whence, the cumulative impacts of the above
mentioned will eventuate into a very unique
condition in the student(s) in that, such
student(s) will acquire a cultivated point and
culture of having the essence of the;
 Abundant Mind.
 Abundant Heart
 Abundant View.
 Abundant Influence.
 Abundant Emotions
 Abundant Thinking.
 Abundant Intelligence
 Abundant Position.
 Abundant Presence
 Abundant (Inter) Action.
which factors are crucial and catalystical
towards the fact and process of the making of
a new Sensei. It is conceded that, some
individuals would not easily swallow this
proposition and fact, in that these factors may
not auger well with those who believe much
in the slylisticness concept. However, such
individuals and/or practitioners are persuaded

13
to give opportunity and explore this line of
reasoning and thinking as exposed herein,
without meaning harm and disrespect to their
own upheld notions and viewpoints. The
main point be view in transformational
learning, training and practice as is embraced
and utilized in Oikado is essentially that, the
student(s) should and must be taught and
trained to be equipped with the essential and
dynamic faculties and action to think and live
out side the box of stylism in his martial arts
systems. In order to accomplish what
otherwise has been deem to be impossible,
by being exponential thinkers, doers and
human beings who are endowed with higher
essence of effective transcendence
physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually,
intellectually, morally and socially. Therefore,
the fact of transformationality as expantiated
herein is to precipitate the fact to discover,
utilize and manifest the fathoms of wholeness
in the path of martial arts. It is further
considered and conceded that, it is rather a
miserable understanding by any Sensei and
student(s), to teach and learn martial arts in
the absolute entirety of kicking and punching,
without first and foremost widening the circle
of knowingness, and to go beyond the trusted
techniques of the system. Therefore in the
making of the Sensei, the contention and
gravaman that the basic techniques of
fighting are the ultimate best, is no longer
sufficing and tenable in the context of this
transformational system. Thence a contrary
view and position shall be accommodated on
this point especially to those who may be
holding a different view but with some
courtesy of reservation and reluctance on the
merits of same in the cycle of contradictions.
THE EMBRACING IMAGE AND NATURE
OF THE SENSEI.
(FUKUMU)
The Sensei and the student(s) are basically
one and the same thing and both must
espouse the principle of integrity, sincerity
and commitment in the fact of intensive and
extensive;
 Training
 Research
 Practice
 Application
 Analysis
 Interpretation
 Analogy
 Conceptualization
So that they can acquire the pervasive
capacity of creative and exponential thinking
and (Inter) action outside the box and the
confinements of the concepts of stylism.
From the above disposition and enterprise,
they would become transcendent in the
context of their broarder;
 Knowledge
 Growth
 Experience
 Wisdom
 Enlightenment
 Analysis
 Comperativity
 Creativity
Which qualities are much lacking in the many
who delved in the factum of entirely teaching
martial arts in the technical context and
environment. Wherefore it is propounded
further that, both the Sensei and the
student(s) should ascend into the realms of
pervasive and deep critical teaching and
learnership of martial arts, from the true point
and dimension of awareness, wholeness and
fullness. The Sensei and the student(s)
should progress further into a point of
acquiring and manifesting the factum of
beneficial teaching and learning of the martial
arts which platitude entails the essential
considerations, ingredients and conditions of
accommodating the fact that;
 The Sensei should always bear in
mind that, the very student(s) he is
teaching and training the martial arts
are in fact the masters of tomorrow
who definitely seek to be better than
him and to transcend the image that
they emulate. Therefore, the Sensei
must teach them with all candour,
devotion and fact of worthiness, and
abundant knowledge, wisdom and
mutual celebration.
 The Sensei should be permitting the
fact that the student(s) become
engaged into the actual process of
teaching others the techniques,
principles, philosophy and teachings
of their martial arts whilst within the
ambits of the Sensei supervision and
the school. The significant truth and
power behind this dispensation, is
that the students concerned do
acquire a better leverage of
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
14
understanding and believing in
themselves because at best,
everyone learn better when she/he is
teaching others and living what is
being taught. Conversely, such
students would ultimately acquire a
finer point of expansive awareness,
creative application and the
manifestation of their creative force,
self-knowledge, self-contentment and
celebrance.
Given the above main factors, both the
Sensei and the student(s) would further
appreciate the fact that in the making of the
Sensei, numerous variables and principles
become directly and vicarious involved, and
invigorated in the varying measures and
intensities. This is so in order to produce a
dynamic faculty, character and personality of
the individual. Some of these special
variables and precedent conditions entail the
following;
 When one teaches others he learns
better and becomes more
empowered in all the aspects of
intellect, faculties, performances and
expression which then become
grounded on the point of essence
understanding. Being more
understood and in trustworthiness,
thus promulgating the pervasive fact
of appropriate influence, appropriate
capacity, appropriate contribution and
participation, and appropriate
difference within and beyond the
factors of the;
 Circles of influence
 Circles of concern
 Circles of indifference
 Circles of prejudice
 Circles of bias
 When the student(s) become
precipitated and urged to become the
teachers of what has been taught,
they become transformed in their
pervasive point of awareness and
understanding of all the things that
are there to be and on how they
ought to be. From this position of
transformances they would begin to
live that which they have learnt and
practiced thereby becoming grander
students who will follow with the point
of creative wisdom, patience and
humility.
 The Sensei and the student(s) when
in the proper context of true self
application in martial arts, they would
realize that it is but a thin line that
which separates each other, and that
both must exist in the fact of mutuality
and co-efficiency. The fact of being a
true teacher lies in the power of the
teacher seeing himself in the
student(s) and for the students in
their teacher. Therefore, both the
Sensei and the student(s) must
celebrate each other and their worth
in the point of consensus.
 When the Sensei imparts his
knowledge, same must be quality
knowledge which has the capacity to
empower the intellect of the
student(s) and qualitatively elevating
the status of knowledge and
awareness of the student(s). So that
such student(s) can gain the
maximum leverage of being quality
teachers of tomorrow in their own
right, initiation and intellectual
potential.
 When the Sensei is engaged in the
critical process of empowering his/her
student(s), there must be the
immense focus and dynamic effort on
enabling the very student(s) to
unleash the dynamic underplay of
their own;
Intelligence.
Visualization.
Talents.
Potential.
Opportunities.
Capacities.
Rationalization.
Exponentiality
Which must all be integrated into a
magnificent point and efficacy of realizing and
manifesting the powerful influence of the
individual(s) creative force. This creative
force is very crucial for the outburst of the
individuals conditions of exponentilality that
which permeates with decisive and profound
impacts on the student(s);
This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei.
15
 Personality
 Character
 Abundant Mind
 Abundant Heart
The Sensei and the student(s) must actually
and definitely believe in what they are
learning, training and practicing. Precisely,
the Sensei must have a stronger and bolder
belief in the very teachings of martial arts that
which he/she espouses and imparts to
others. The fact of belief in oneself is the
most critical quality in the process of making
the Sensei and same can be reinforced
through diligent study and practice. If not,
what then is the point of being a Sensei and
to begin with, isn’t this the fact of blunt fallacy.
It must be understood that in the matters of
martial arts, the fact of conscience does
matter because of one’s conscience is the
repositions of the truth(s) of martial arts.
Further to the above, the Sensei and the
student(s) must note and acknowledge that, if
their conviction is strong, bold and informed
then their abundant mind will yield immense
influence of creativity, wisdom, character,
competence and wholeness because the
main truth is that, each one of us gives
his/her own life to that which he/she believes
in. Basically, it all centers on the fact of
choice and the point of appropriate
awareness and understanding.
 The Sensei and the student(s) must
acquire the fundamental aptitude to
realize that life is not a career but
rather a process of attaining the
purpose of existence. Therefore, the
point of such understanding and
through the teachings of martial arts,
they must be able to confer and
affirm the fact of validation of each
other’s potentials, efforts and worth
so that everyone can celebrate his or
her own uniqueness in the dojo, and
in life and in the pervasive point of
holistic embracement.
 When the Sensei is teaching the
student(s) he/she should have in the
upper mind, the fact that the quality of
his knowledge and teaching would be
the catalyst and pivotal instrument
that can invigorate and sustain the
student(s) change, focus, creativity
and leverage towards the attainment
of best standard performance,
discipline and converging point of
inner change. In this very context,
same must capacitate, precipitate
and transcendence over the
prevailing and limiting mindset by
attaining a transformative point of
understanding, view, articulation and
expression so that they become
imaginatively brilliant, creative and
functionally. Thus becoming more
boundless in the environment of
higher intelligence, self definitions
and effective participation.
 When the Sensei is with the
student(s), he must at all time
stimulate and sustain them in an
environment that which is grounded
in the principles of creative;
Participation
Consultation
Consensus
Mutual Respect
Celebration of each other.
And at the same time being fully aware of the
competing tendencies of the positions of the
Sensei and that of the student(s). Thence the
status of credibility and pervacity can be
manifested and maintained without any effort
and coercion. The distinctness will be
experienced in a subtle of minds.
THE VITAL STATURE AND QUALITY OF
STUDENT(S).
(HINSHITSU)
When the Sensei is teaching and assisting
the student(s) in the whole scope of training
and practice, the special focus should not be
entirely on the external flair of techniques. In
that, they shouldn’t dilute, hyprocritize and
overlook the underpinning meaning, essence
and wholeness of the various aspects
inherent in what is actually being executed.
Therefore, the special emphasy should be
entrusted, sustained and articulate in and on
the fundamental premise that, the higher
essence in the study of martial arts is to
appropriately,
 Train
 Practice
 Research
 Analyse
 Meditate
 Apply

16
assertively with an open mind, complete
awareness, resourcefulness, passionate
heart and vision, and true spirit. Inherently,
the Sensei and the student(s) will over time
realize the inherent contradictions and
pressure of conflict in all their endeavors.
That which must be resolved, pacified and
overcomed in the mind. Thence, one’s mind
must always be resilient, pervasive and
resourceful within the framework of
synergism.
The Sensei should further note and
appreciate the fact that once the conditions of
exponentiality had been acquired by the
student(s), such student(s) will be capacitated
with an immense attribute and endowments
that are consisting of;
 The power of freedom.
 The power of choice.
 The power on intelligence.
 The power of artistic essence.
 The power of expression.
 The power of boundlessness.
Which of ingredients are fundamental in the
production and capacity of self determination,
realisation in the context of martial arts.
Correspondingly and with great impacts, the
above endowments will enable the student(s)
to become more than ever, to be beyond the
concept, technique, strategy and the general
confines of the style (box) and thus attaining
a sustainable position and condition of being
exponentially dynamic and boundless.
On the overall, the Sensei and the student(s)
should inter-alia realize that in the very
process of training, learning and internalizing
the martial art’s techniques, principles,
teachings, precepts, theories and forms they
should have distinctness. This distinctness
will be experienced in a subtle point of
immense space, which divided what is there
in the box of martial arts and the appropriate
response(s) to same exponentially. Both the
Sensei and student(s) whenever they indulge
in their learnership and practice they must
invoke the use of the fundamental powers so
that they can acquire the extraordinary
eloquence of function and mastery over time.

It must be noted that in the province of the
subtle space, lies the ground of the
tremendous power of choice that which the
respective student(s) must use, resort to and
invoke in order to be allowing. In that the said
martial arts, could bear any value and
meaning unto himself. Thence it be noted that
the power of choice lies in the heart of the
student(s). It is this latent power that each
student should be encouraged to utilize with
consciousness and wisdom, and with
considered discretion and responsibility
because such power can impact on one’s
destiny in all the facets of one’s life.
Therefore, both the Sensei and the student(s)
can through the fact of using this latent
power, become more than what they are, and
before they can attain the creative influence
over their environment and life.
Therefore, in whatever the choice and
decision that the Sensei and the student(s)
can make, these fundamental powers will
always be sounding in the context and ambit
of being positive or negative, and thus
demanding the factum of responsibility and
intelligent sincerity.
THE POINT OF TRANSFORMATION
(HENKA)
When the above ingredients had been
imbued and integrated in the scope of training
and practice, they would essentially transform
the nature of the student(s). They would
provide new defined dimensions of the;
 Mind
 Heart
 Emotions
 Spirit
 Body
which are the five basic and universal
dimensions of being whole. Out of this very
fact and ground of attainments, the same
student(s) would transcend further into the
levels of higher consciousness, participation
and interactiveness. It is a standing principle
in Oikado that, the Sensei and the student(s)
should always maintain a sustainable balance
and condition of intense training, practice and
integration of the body, mind and spirit
through the vision of transforming their
essential nature. Once there is this change in
the point of wholeness rather than
fragmentations would be experienced and
manifested, so that each and everyone can
acquire the immense capacity and
fundamentality, and essence of
 Meaning
 Creativeness
 Greatness
within their scope of sequential development

which factors in the ultimate, totally translate
into the acquisition of the dynamic state and
essence of realizing the profound
manifestation of the creative force. And its

point of the higher self, which is the greatest
and unsurpassed gift of difference that
anyone can ever aspire for and acquire in the
realms of martial arts. essentially that the
above become the integral quality and
process of approaching the leadership,
scholarship and mastery in Oikado.
It is imperative for the Sensei and the
student(s) to realize further that the
fundamental essence of Oikado entrities both
to engage in the study, training and practice
of martial arts with an absolutely emolument
heart, mind and spirit by embracing
holistically and contentedly the aspects of the
techniques, faculty and scholarship with the
quality of embracement and indulgence. Thus
they would quickly gain the immense power
and capacity of master minding the whole
reservoir of the martial art resources thus
achieving a profound and resourceful ground
upon which to exponentiate into higher levels
of difinements and definity. It must be borne
that such a commitment is very crucial
because it would lead to greater and splendid
grounds that which eventuate into impacting
the deeper dimensions of the

Conversely, the Sensei should always instill
the fullest realization in his student(s) that our
martial arts should be approached and
traversed in many dynamics, the dynamics
that have profound effects on the individuals,
 Faculties
 Intellectuality
 Perceptions
 Perceptiveness
 Interactions
so as to initiate a powerful springboard for the
essence of awakening, transformation and
reformation. Other than to have a tacit ground
that produces in substance, dyfunctionality,
vagueness and wooly attainments in ones
martial arts. Therefore in the compendium
and intricases of the above, the appropriate
definement in the pursuit of undergoing

In the cumulative effect of transformance,
great dimensions of reformations and re-

Sensei and student(s) can definitely stand
out balanced, empowered and in total
awareness of the differing points of the outer
reality and the inner reality. And thereon,
they would begin to profoundly experience
the immense elements of;
 Real Synergy
 Real Participation.
 Real Difference.
 Real Inter-Action
 Real Magnificence
 Real Contribution
 Real Significance
 Real Substance
 Real Presence
 Real Greatness
 Real Worth
With an unending quality and choice of the
mind, heart, emotions, spirit and conscience
which are the truthful and holistic
cornerstones and hallmark of the discipline
of martial arts.
[I]n Our Way, the individual must always be
aware and appreciate the fact that he is
standing between the Earth and Heaven, in
the centre of the Universe by being part of
the whole. Therefore, to dwell in all these
dimensions one must give out unresevedly
his own heart and mind….”
The Sensei of substance will not be much
focused on the fact of his own advancement
in terms of rank status and large studentry.
He must be fully focused and committed into
the fact of teaching others, his own study
and practice which factors will enhance his
own quality and substance of worth.
Therefore, it is imperative to point out that in
the fact of attaining higher rankings(s) in the
martial arts, the promodial factors that are
essentially considered are as follows;
 What is the extent and depth of
ones contribution towards the fact of
teaching students and others the
very discipline of martial arts.
Conversely, the turnover point of
such students into higher levels of
gradings in the martial arts becomes
crucial.
 What intellectual contribution does
one give into the intellectual realm
of the martial arts, in the context of
theory, philosophy, application and
social participation and
development(s).
 What is the extent and measure of
ones contribution in the overall
activities of the martial arts in the
context of tournaments, gradings,
training others and organization.
 What is the context and measure of
ones active interest and
participation in the advancement of
martial arts in the technical,
theoretical, intellectual, social
context, and as an instrument of
empowerment to the general society
and humanity.
Once the Sensei is aware of these vital
ingredients he will stand out unique and
assured that he or she will capture the
attention and recognition that will merit
same, to be advanced into the higher
ranking status in the fellowship of martial
arts.
The above position is very simple to
appreciate in that, in life the more you give
into something the more the rewards
become harvested, this is a principle of life
and it can not be changed nor negotiated.
The Sensei and the student(s) should note
and realize that transformational teaching,
training and practice as expounded in the
Oikado martials and urges the
manifestation(s) of the effective change of
paradigm to transcend with eloquence the
limiting structures of the technique(s) and
stylism.
It ushers the dawn of new beginnings in the
essence of perceptions, thinking and
interactions in the culture and discipline of
martial arts.
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
CHAPTER TWO
THE TRANSCENDENT STUDENT(S),
FUNDAMENTALS
[I]n the ways of our Way the seeker of the truth is unbounded in mind and
heart, he goes beyond the fact of illusions and content of his own ignorance
for he does not seek with the persuasions of his ego and mind, but of the heart
and spirit. The incredible wonder and brilliance that which is there can only
be comprehended in pureness and emptiness of the mind and spirit…”
THE CONVERGENCE OF STUDENT(S)
PERCEPTIONS
(RIKAI)
The Sensei should always anticipate a
critical point of convergence in the
development of the student(s) under his
charge, which condition would manifest the
fact of transcendence in the student(s). In
this stage, a noticeable change would be
observed in the student(s) within the inner
and outer dimensions, bringing about a
condition of effectiveness and clarity in the
subtle qualities of;
 Analysis
 Vision
 Talent
 Power
 Equanimity
 Participation
 Balance
 Centering
 Wholeness
 Mindfulness
 Silence
 Patience
 Alignment
 Passion
 Courage
 Conscience
 Principle
 Presence
Which factors are inherently found in the
heart, mind and body of person who has
experienced the fact of inner shiftings.
These very SHIFTINGS ARE IMPACTED
UPON AND IMMENSELY BY THE POWER
OF AWARENESS THAT WHICH IS FOUND
AT THE DEEPER LEVELS OF THE
HEART, MIND AND BODY. Once this point
of transformance is realized, the student(s)
would have delved beneath the surface of
his person and attained a position of
reflection on who he is inside thus causing
same to regain the substantive essence,
sense and capacity of being aware of his
own “being” and specialness as a seeker of
the higher truth in the way of martial arts.
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
It is also pointed out to the Sensei that, once
the inner shiftings had been effected in the
student(s), that very aspect will go all the
way down to remove the aspects of inner
conflict and bring about the effective point of
inner realization of a reality beyond the
physical context in the third attention.
Thereby causing the impetus and moment of
pacification and emancipation from the
painful inhibitions and consequences from;
 The cycle of ignorance
 The cycle of denial
 The cycle of Ego
 The cycle of alienation
 The cycle of illusions
 The cycle of obsession
 The cycle of attachment
 The cycle of prejudice
 The cycle of hopelessness
 The cycle of inadequacy
 The cycle of violence
 The cycle of fear
 The cycle of aversion
 The cycle of opinionation.
Thence as a seeker, he would come and
arrive at the point of spiritual realization and
essence in a vision beyond the dimensions
of any reality. Conversely, a student in this
condition would emerge without a desire, a
will and need for the notions, sense and
instincts of hostility, resentment, fear, anger,
animosity, self doubt, hopelessness and
violence because in the deeper point of his
heart, mind, spirit and body, he would have
glimpsed and delved in the essence of
peace and worth that is found nowhere else
other than within. It is therefore through this
significant transformation within, that the
student(s) would gain the powerful entrance
and abidance in the condition of unique
reformation. It must also be stated that,
once the student(s) has gained this
ascendance into the inner chamber of
reformation, the fact of inner shift and
realization will cause the hallmark of;
 Spiritual Realization,
 Spiritual Value,
 Spiritual Force,
 Spiritual Vision,
 Spiritual Participation.
That which is very much immense, precise
and dynamic, and effectively going far
deeper into removing the superficial
emotions and personality of the student.
This state going far deeper into the heart of
reality thereby changing the whole equation
of perceptions and perspectives of the
student(s). Consequently, such student(s)
will further attain a supreme condition of
depth of complete awareness and essence
that which would cause the precipitation and
the gathering of the power of change. When
the power of change has taken over, the
placid conditions of wholeness would be
acquired and bringing about the
manifestation of;
 Physical Intelligence
 Emotional Intelligence
 Spiritual Intelligence
 Mental Intelligence
 Moral Intelligence
 Universal Intelligence
Which would take deep root and precedence
in the essence of the abundant heart, mind,
spirit and conscience within the finer fabrics
and provinces of pure;
 Silence
 Pacification
 Knowing
 Healing
 Humility
 Harmony
 Participation
 Prayerfulness
 Service
 Peace
In the vastness of the present and the
Universe. These elements and power can
only be found at the deeper levels of the
heart, mind and body that has been
transformed. Wherefore, the Sensei must
always appreciate the fact that, once the
student(s) has attained this status of
transcendence, the student(s) would have
directly, absolutely and decidedly broken
down all the barriers of the circle of
ignorance, definements and limitations
which fact of attainment is very much pivotal
and precedent in the process of making the
Sensei.
The transcendent student(s) will further
exhibit the subtle essence of incredible
attributes, characteristics, propensity, sense
of worth and profound personality that which
is contained and expressed in the whole
state of;
 Beautiful Mind.
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
 Beautiful Heart.
 Beneficial Presence.
 Limit
 Dynamism.
 Discipline
 Standards
 Reformation
 Vibrancy
 Pervasive Purpose
 Beneficial Participation
Which are the deeper points of
enlightenment, inner peace, and power of
awareness and awakening. Therefore,
when the student(s) is armed with the above
attributes, he will certainly standout to be
distinctly endowed with the irreversible
quality of immense exponentiation and
personal power and mastery in his martial
arts. This state will be combined with the
fact of total inspiration and vision in life.
When all these have been cumulated, their
total impact in the mind and heart of the
student(s) would make same to ultimately
achieve what otherwise had been
considered the impossible in one’s life. That
which is the extraordinary fact of living with
the brilliance of true mind, hear, spirit and
transcendent perceptions.
Furthermore, the Sensei should always
insist on the student(s) to maintain a true
position of total abstinence and zero
tolerance to the use of alcohol, drugs and
other substances that which may adversely
impact the nature and quality of life.
Furthermore, the student(s) must fully
appreciate the fact that they do have a
social, moral and legal duty to help all those
who fight the abuse in whatever form of
drugs, because all life must be nurtured and
preserved accordingly.
THE TRANSCENDENT INTERACTIVE
TRAINING AND PRACTICE
(KOERU)
The student(s) should necessarily be
exposed to the below overarching teaching
and interactive training framework. This
exposure is vital in order that they become
engrossed with technical concordance,
diversity, variability and exponentiality, depth
and essence of self-efficacy in relation to the
various aspects of techniques, strategies,
applications and expression.
The fact of their regimentation should be
intensive and extensive in order that their
powerful point of potential and
exponentiation can be released with frugality
of dynamic significance and magnificence in
context of form and formless. Therefore, the
Sensei must ensure that he canvasses the
structural layout in order to complete the
very process of making a blackbelt student.
Similarly the student(s) should ensure that
such an exposition is given to them during
their learnership and training phases.
However, in the event of human limitations
being present in the capacity of the Sensei,
respecting any of the structures laid out, the
Sensei should not hesitate to enlist the
assistance of other Sensei(s) who may have
adequate competency in the particular area
of deficiency. Conversely, once the
student(s) realizes this caveat, they should
consult with their Sensei and seek
supplementation or resort to schools that
offer specialization on that particular aspect.
This condition is acknowledged because of
the dynamic principle of common but
differentiated capability and capacity which
is inherent in Oikado. Therefore, the
regimentation process should proceed as

 THE CONCEPT OF STYLISM AND
EXPONENTIALITY.
(YARUKATA)
The Sensei should advert the student(s) to
the issues and fact of the concept of the
style and stylism. The starting point is to
show the historical evolution of respective
style(s) and then their substantive
development into which new concepts,
interpretations and preferences became
attached and ingrained into the new or
existing creation. In synopsis, the Sensei
and the student(s) should be aware of the
fact that a style is composed of the skills,
techniques, values, principles and
philosophy inherent to its character.
Basically, a style is made up of a group of
preferred techniques and skills which had
been created and borrowed elsewhere,
incorporated and aligned to format and
formulate a distinct methodology of creative
function, application and conceptualization,
which then is circled in the concept of a
style. Essentially, there is no style that
which is pure or original. All styles emerged
from other styles thence in their nature and
context are hybrid characters, thus the
reason that there are more of commonalities
than differences. It is incumbent to find
some martial artists placing much focus of
their time, energy and intellect into the fact
of trying to define, defend and maintain their
stylism. Thence such individuals are
considered as conformist and positionaries.
But then there are those martial artists who
transcend the circumference of the style(s)
by becoming visionaries, innovators and
revolutionaries. These are considered to be
the transcendentalist because their dynamic
perceptions go beyond the limitation of the
style. It is the transcendentalists who
outgrow the fact of definement, confinement
and limitations of their own style(s), and
bring about new dimensions of concepts,
methods, technique, theories, principles and
application in the context of new martial art
styles or systems.
The Sensei and the student(s) should further
note and bear in mind that, due to the above
dispensation one would find that the
dichotonomy emerges and exists between
the;
 Stylist (positionary),
 Non – stylist (visionary)
and this position has been prevalent
throughout the history and nature of martial
arts. Therefore, the Sensei and the
student(s) should not come into a point of
surprise to find that there are those martial
artists who find their absolute worth and
substance in the fact of stylism and
assertion of the superiority of their own
style(s) over others. In the same tone
undermining other systems. This position
though deplorable, is premised along the
factors of viewing the nature and essence of
martial arts in the narrower scope of intellect
and mindset. A mindset of this nature is
more limiting and posing denial of the
pervasive interconnectedness and
wholeness of martial arts.
[A]nd what a sadness it is to see an insect
fall into a cup of milk and in that act
sounding in its contentment that, it has
inherited the absoluteness of the
Universe...”
On the other hand, the Sensei and the
student(s) would observe that the martial
artists of great mind, regenerated thinking
and interactive focus would regard the fact
of a style to be a collection of tools and
structures. And that these enables the
practitioner to transcend to higher and
deeper dimensions of physical, mental,
moral, intellectual and spiritual
empowerment, worth and sustainability.
Their minds and essence of intellectuality
had outgrown the boundaries of the style
(stylism) by becoming exponential, creative
and pervasive thinkers, innovators, creators
and philosophers who are beyond and out of
the ordinary because they have acquired the
unboundness of true mind and spirit.
[T]he mind that has attained its creative
essence and potential can not be
compromised and stalled. When motivated
by its own powerful vision it would go into
the infinitive Universe to acquire its
incredible substance and reality…”
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
Conversely, an open-minded Sensei will
definitely teach the student(s) to attain a true
condition and position of exponential
thinking and action, regenerative mind and
concepts, creative function and participation,
attainments of personal empowerment and
originality rather than to make them become
ritualistic, mechanical and structures of
comformity in what they are learning,
training and practicing in the context of the
martial arts and from him.
THE NATURE AND STRUCTURAL
COMPONENTS OF THE STYLE.
(KOSEI)
The Sensei and student(s) must always
appreciate the fact that a style has several
modules or segments that which a
student(s) should study, train, practice and
apply before same can advance into the
next advance stage. These units are vital
segments or sections that must be mastered
before one can graduate into the position of
being a complete and competent student in
his martial arts. Some of these modules can
be long or short, and can cover a wide range
of theories, applications, skills and
techniques but then the main point being to
give the student the fact of diversity,
exponentiality and comprehensibility through
the fact of interactive training and practice,
which would produce a point of dynamic
competency.
Generally, an experienced Sensei will have
the ability to instantly identify any student in
his class and collates same with some
particular module(s) in order that, the
concerned student can fit in out rightly, while
in others the progression may not be the
case or similar. Given the above, it is also
pointed out that the modules that are
presented can not suit each and every
student. Some students will be good at
some modules while others will not. This is
due to the principles of common but
differentiated ability and capacity because
each individual has his unique potentials.
These then translate into standard
performance variance(s), to interact and
entertaining variances. Furthermore, the
student(s) should be urged to entertain with
other students from different styles or
systems, the point being that, out of this
creative exercise the very student(s) would
acquire an immense opportunity and
capacity of;
 Comparative observation and
analysis.
 Comparative leverage and
modifications.
 Comparative perceptions and
exponentiality.
which comes from the fact of exchange of
techniques, skills, theories and concept. In
truth, there shouldn’t be any condition of
phobia(s) and bias because from ancient
times this position has been the trend that
impacted on how the martial arts developed
to the present day. In the same theme, the
student(s) should also be adverted to the
fact that the condition, position and stature
of masterhood does not become acquired
from a single source, style, teacher and
philosophy. All these ingredients must blend
and integrate in order produce the grand
status and quality of variability, and the
ultimate best of the product out of oneself.
Therefore, the student(s) is encouraged to
spread out his learning and training
landscape so as to be inclusive rather than
exclusive and selective because nothing is
irrelevant and inessential. Once the
student(s) have gained this very capacity
and propensity, they would definitely
become endowed with the achievement,
experience and exponentiation of;
 Diversity of thinking and wisdom.
 Diversity of function and application.
 Strategically perceptions and
perspectives.
 Centredness and roundness.
 Depth and Wholeness.
Rather than the facest of superficiality and
constraintment from the limitations of
boundaries occasioned by their preferred style
or system. Furthermore, the student(s) should
realize that styles are tailored differently in
order to meet varied conditions, Objectives,
preferences and activities thence one would
find that styles or systems are of;
 Full contact or non-contact nature.
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
 Combatative or non-combatative
nature.
And furthermore, that some styles can adopt
the preferential plane or symentry of linear,
circular, and or a combination thereof. But
what is of great significance is the fact that
the student(s) should transcend the limiting
perception of the style and methodology so
that they can gain the point of absolute
originality, ingenuinity, creative thinking and
function in the state of Artlessness.
THE ESSENCE OF TRANSCENDING
INITIATIVES IN TRAINING
(SHINSHU)
The study and the training in the martial arts
should not be a fact of division and skewed
perceptions. It must be a volatile process
that invigorates the powerful potential to
become a better person in the community,
society and the world. It should also provide
the ambience of critical and right thinking,
action and intentions for the beneficialness
of all humanity. Thus touching on the
foundations of true consciousness within
oneself, thereby transcending into the higher
realities in life and of oneself. In the ways of
the Oikado, it is known and acknowledged
that in order to transform into these heights
it is not an overnight thing, because it takes
an aspect of an extraordinary initiative to do
so overtime. However, the most essential
requirement in an individual is to acquire the
potential to be the seeker of the truth, to
have the courage and the desire to embrace
and to serve it, then all things will begin to
fall into place. Therefore and given this
huge dispensation as found in the ways of
Oikado, the imperative is that the teachings
and the training, the practice and the
application of Oikado should always be done
in the best ways and with the most tenent of
graciousness to the mind, body and spirit.
The signifance of this approach is to allow
the gradual realization and maturation into
the discipline that which has an
overwhelming and profound impacts on the
character and personality of the individual.
Thus the significance being understood and
appreciated as a way that is integral into
ones life. Therefore, Oikado does
encourage the vitalistics of;
 Giving acknowledgement and
validity to all martial arts styles and
teachings.
 Encouraging that the growth and
maturation of the student(s) can
only be guaranteed when same are
permitted to study and train in other
styles and tradition in order to
acquire the great experience of
being and diversity
 The realizations that when all things
are done with open mind(s), virtues
heart and questing spirit, there is no
barrier that is too great and
impossible to overcome. Thus in
the leanership and practice of the
martial are everyone should
transcend the perception of the self,
preference(s) and preconceived
notions so as to allow the
overwhelming experience of
wholeness and boundlessness.
It is further pointed out that, given the
magnificence of the teachings as found in
this discipline of Oikado, absolute devotion
in the intellectual exercise and physical
exercise should be done with the depth of
affinity and conscious commitment. The
Sensei and the student(s) would in the
course of their social and martial arts
interaction meet those who will disavow the
nature, meanings and significance of these
teachings. But then, in whatever situation
and the end, no one should be discouraged
because sometimes to breakdown the walls
of ignorance, annoyance and self ego takes
more than an act of teaching and of
experience. Therefore, one should extend
one’s compassion and understanding to all
those whose point of view may hold out
differently. But if none is in silence and not
contradicting such teachings, it should be
understood that same is affirming them and
may not have not the courage, the sincerity
and the boldness to openly say so.
The reasoning to all the above is grounded
on the fact that, many of us fear so much to
be change because on the substance of
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
change we begin to be aware of who we are
and of all our limitations.
Therefore, all those who are in the ways of
our martial arts should attain ultimately, the
full realization that at the bottom of all things
it is more about oneself and the power of
regaining one’s divine consciousness, thus
entering into the transcending reality. The
truth is therefore this, the Sensei and the
student(s) should always view and maintain
the transcended position and
acknowledgement that;
 The techniques of the style,
character and nature are basic tools
and springboard towards the
attainment of higher mind.
 The leanership of martial arts
should transcend the barriers,
structures, concepts and cultures of
the style and tradition so that the
powerful dispensations of great and
true experience could be attained.
 Through true experience,
effectiveness the overwhelming
consciousness can be acquired and
utilized in order to eventually
become the first of the many to
reach, embrace and integrated into
the Universal Consciousness,
through one’s absolute potential of
the hearts, mind and spirit.
Conversely, the student(s) who have right
thinking capacity and profound faculty
should not, and entirely be content with the
superficiality of the techniques, styles and
traditions but rather, of the substance
therein that which can and does empower
them to become completely different and be
dwelling in their greatness in the dimensions
of their hearts, mind and spirit without half
measures and pretences. In the overall, the
student(s) in the martial arts should be
guided by the powerful realization and
conviction which inter-alia contains these
fundamental truths and principle in that;
 The words that are uttered will
certainly shape one’s future.
 The thinking one has will impact on
the reality that is currently
experienced.
 Whatever that which is being
thought of will certainly produce a
new reality.
 Whatever action or omission done
will certainly impact on the
definements and meaning of one’s
destiny.
 That in truly believing in something
and deeply committed into it, that
will manifest it ultimate reality in
one’s lifetime.
 That when doing something and in
the deeper point of sincerity and
vision, it will begin to manifest itself
in one’s character and personality
as a profound reality.
When the above mentioned had been
internalized, the full process of
transformation will gain deeper and greater
momentum in one’s martial arts, and thus
redefining the student(s) mind heart and
spirit with unique and powerful quality that
which is beyond the finest.
Therefore once this very point is attained,
the emergence and merging of mind and
spirit will gravitated to a remarkable
condition thus producing a magnificent
difference in the student(s) life.
Consequently, enabling them to enter into
the frontiers of the Second Attention.
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
CHAPTER THREE
THE PROTOCOL OF PARTICIPATION,
FUNDAMENTALS
“[W]hen in the midst of chaos the apparent aspect of order can not easily be
discerned, therefore transcend the point of chaos and order then you will be in
the essential state of higher freedom and vision….”
THE ESSENCE OF PROTOCOL(S) IN THE
DOJO.
(GAIKOGIRE)
The Sensei and the student(s) always train
and practice in the environment of the Dojo
(school) and with the very system of
participation special procedures and rituals
ought to be followed in order to produce
effective:
 Organisation,
 Participation,
 Discipline
Which would be beneficial to the progress of
the individual and the Dojo. It must be
emphasized that the Dojo is the epicenter of
Martial Arts activity and all the standards
required must be identified, implemented
and honoured by all the members of Dojo.
Therefore, the reference to same is
regarded as the protocol of participation,
which required strong commitment,
preparedness which is and presence known
as:
 TSUKENI ITTE KYNI AWASA
Conversely, the Sensei and the student
must observe these protocols so that their
actions and non actions can progressively
advance in their study and teaching and
practice of the Martial Arts.
THE MARTIAL ART TRAINING IN THE
DOJO
(REIGASHO)
It is fact that, the learning training of the
Martial Arts is done inside a school which is
called the Dojo. The Dojo is where the
discipline of Martial Arts is imparted and it
has its unique spheres of protocol. Etiquette
and rituals which create the proper
environment for learning. Every Dojo has its
own rules and regulation especially
designed for the practitioners and visitors.
This is regarded as special and ordinary
protocol which must be adhered to by all the
concerned.
However, a Dojo must be very clean, the
uniform of practitioners be clean, and there
should be no vulgarity and other
misconducts. When entering and training in
the Dojo, one should not put on his/her
shoes. Furthermore, there should be an
atmosphere of serenity, welcome and
courtesy in the Dojo. When an individual
This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.
enters the Dojo, he must bow (Rei), he must
also bow to his/her colleagues (Otagai-ni-
Rei) and this procedure prevails even when
leaving the Dojo.
THE BASIC INTERNAL ARRANGEMENT
OF A DOJO.
(TEHAI)
The Dojo is designed so that there is the;
 The Front Wall.
 The Back Wall.
 The Upper and Lower Sides.
And each section or side having its own
significance and factors of etiquette which
must be observed.
When the practitioners are doing the line-up
and other rituals, their point of constance
reference is the front wall, this is called the
Shomen. At this wall a picture of the
founder of the style/school, national flag, a
statute of a deity can be placed as a focal
point. However, this preference varies
according to each school and countries.
This focal point is called the Kami Dama,
more often than not, many Dojo’s do have
an alter where the focal point is put and the
alter is called the Shide

The Making of the Sensei

  • 1. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 1 CHAPTER ONE THE TRANSFORMATIONAL TEACHING TRAINING AND PRACTICE FUNDAMENTALS [I]N our Way of martial art we know that our deepest fear is not that we are ignorant and inadequate. But rather, it is in the fact of not embracing the incredible knowledge, truths and teachings that have the immense potential to unleash within us, the power that can forever change us beyond measure. Therefore, in seeking the truth in darkness becomes our feeble point of content….” THE TRANSIENT BEGINNINGS IN MARTIAL ART(S). (ICHIJI TEKINA) In the matters of martial arts the point of perceptions and standard practice of Oikado is that the depth, meaning and essence of learning should lead to transformances in the context of the  Mind  Emotions  Heart  Spirit  Body Which then would have a precipitated potential and capacity to empower the practitioner morally, intellectually, spiritually and socially. This poignant view takes into account the fact that this is a long term and intricate process that which intensely requires the special division and critical attention by the practitioner(s) into the aspects of;  Training  Practice  Research  Application Rather than to entirely focus on the conventional mechanical ritual of the techniques, form, strategy and combat. The point of tremendous influence and view about transformational teaching, training and practice is that the aspects of the techniques, forms and strategy and combat are basically the essential tools, structures and signposts that must be learned, mastered and transcended into the higher levels of conscious manifestation, participation of body, mind, heart and spirit. Thus giving transformed perceptions and perspectives that can holistically give the potential of;  Personal empowerment, consciousness and effective participation in all matters of life and the Universe. Conversely, such practitioners would ultimately achieve a congruent state of having the quality of pervasive, beneficial and influential mind, heart and spirit that would permeate into the whole environment
  • 2. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 2 of life through ascendances into the higher realms of;  Understanding  Awareness  Appreciation  Definement  Sensitivity  Perception  Placement  Integration  Application  Participation Which faculty is very rare when one is mechanical (technical) in entirety. Transformational approach to martial arts is more inclined and motivated towards the removal and reduction of the conditions of under or skewed teaching, misphilosophy, misconceptions and skewed developments in the contextual art of the practitioner. Basically the fathom of this essence is holistically grounded than selectively orientated and predesigned. Once the negative results have been minimized, the profound and critical developments and impacts will emerge from the converging point of such transformance, which would promote and invigorate the essence of;  Development of Intelligence  Development of Service  Development of Discipline  Development of Equimmunity  Development of Moral Choice  Development of Vibrancy  Development of Dynanism  Physical Development  Mental Development  Emotional Development  Intellectual Development  Exponential Development  Experiential Development  Spiritual Development  Social participation and personal mastery. And advancement to the fact of transcendence to heights and measures that eventuate into the attainment of pure freedom. That is, from their rigid conventional adherences without losing their form, substance and essence, but leading to the highest concept of true art and artless, thence attaining the trident essence. Once the transcendent essence has been attained then the significance of the technique, form, strategy and combat become a point of reference only rather than the fact of imperatives because in this condition the practitioner would certainly be in the state of the higher  Mind  Feeling  Perception  View  Precence  Principle  Influence  Spirit Because the physical dimensions would have been subsumed by the internal dimension and prospective inner novations of immense measure and height. In essence, transformational learning and practice goes further to show that the centre focus of the interbalance between the aspects of;  Concentration on the physical techniques, forms, strategies and combat which must then be intercepted with the essentials of philosophy, morality, spirituality and social consciousness and participation. THE POTENTIAL NATURE AND MINDSET OF STUDENT(S). (ZUNO) When these developments had been initiated, cultivated and experienced within the landscape of martial art learning, such practitioners would certainly attain a good point of leverage and the advantage of immense beneficialness, expanseness and wholeness. Therefore, in the standpoint of Oikado the students and the Sensei must think and function outside the box, explore and attain the condition of emancipation from the rigid circumference of conventionality by becoming innovative, creative, experiential and pervasive, exponential in perceptions and perspectives within the potent characteristics of their true art and martial arts and pervasive participation. Therefore, hence manifesting and exponentiating their superb fabrics and qualities of;  Originality  Creativity  Artisticness Rather than to be the products of mechanical, ritualistic conformity and conventionality within and lethargy their own art and style. In the persuit of this objective,
  • 3. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 3 the pervasive terrain and frame work of such teaching, training, practice and learning is depicted along these lines and without prejudice to their collaboration and supplement action. It is adverted that, when given the above framework and the approach being in place, it will set itself as a sringboard of which quality and interactive training could be achieved with the main point of pervasity and depth of cultivation in the practitioner, which will always and reasonably be stimulated and guaranteed in the context of;  Training  Practice  Application in the holistic context. When such holistic transformances are experienced and evident in the practitioner, then the impossible happens in that, the ordinary student will definitely become a transcendent person with resourced faculty, personality and character in the realms of martial arts, life and the entire world. On the closing note and without going into depths of merits and demerits of this approach, the important point to realize and mention is that the designs and intentions of transformational training, practice and learning are elaborated below in the following terms; OIKADO HISTORICAL DIMENSION. TECHNICAL DIMENSION. STRATEGICAL DIMENSIONS. COMBAT DIMENSION. MENTORING/ADMINISTRATIVE DIMENSIONS. COVERT DIMENSION. WEAPONRY DIMENSION. RESEARCH DIMENSION. MENTAL DIMENSION. INTELLECTUAL DIMENSION. MORAL DIMENSION. SPIRITUAL DIMENSION. SOCIAL DIMENSION. INTER PERSONAL DIMENSION. COMPARATIVE DIMENSION. NATIONAL DIMENSION. INTERNATIONAL DIMENSIONS. UNIVERSAL DIMENSION. STUDENT AND MENTOR.
  • 4. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 4  Such a process and approach does not want to overshadow, displace, undermine, substitute or subsume the existing methodologies and approaches in the martial arts teaching, but rather to critically engage creative and exponential thinking and to supplement same and give another considered viewpoint in the context of elevated points of difference.  Such an approach and method is aimed at providing an alternative viewpoint, standpoint and concepts essential to the comprehensive martial arts awareness and effective participation.  Such an approach and process should ultimately provide the practitioner with the essential intellectual and perceptual freedom of the essence of concept, experience, application and exponentiation within the critical points of centeredness, roundness, fluidity, placement and wholeness. Rather than to fossify in the superficiality of the structures of the techniques, form, strategy and combat as emphasized through the conditions of;  Conformity  Conventionality. Essentially, the emphasy is on the pervasive and embracing landscape of;  Exponentially  Creativity  Originality  Transcendent Essence Conversely, the process of dynamic inquiry, implementation and articulation will be initiated in the ambit of scrutinizing the pervasive nature and essence of the masters and the teachers of the martial arts in the ideal and secular contexts because in the ultimate essence in the martial arts, there is more to it than that which ordinarily meets the eyes. THE TRUE WAY OF THE MASTERS (SHUTOKU) In beginning, the Masters of Martial Arts were basically the ordinary student(s) who underwent effective training and learning from their own teachers, the very teachers who acted and stood up as their role models in life. At the very point of being student(s), they were highly inspired, motivated and committed into whatever that was being taught and permitted to be trained and practiced in their way of the martial arts. Essentially, these became individuals who were engrossed the with earnest passion, desire, willpower and quest to transcend the parameters of the;  Techniques  Style  Form  Concept by going deeper and beyond the very appearance of what constituted their tradition. Therefore, in the persuit of this ideal, task and goal they went far beyond the structures of their system by penetrating the deeper dimensions and realms of the mind and the spirit. Consequently, they transcended the definements, measures and confinements of the structures of techniques and style, and in the same vent they acquired the grand dispensation and factors of;  Depth  Centering  Meaning  Roundness  Wholeness  Transcended Intelligence  Transcended Focus  Transcended Emotions  Transcended Application  Transcended Wisdom  Transcended Participation. As they delved into the very depths of meanings, essence and formlessness. Thereby, attaining a unique condition and state of viewing, understanding and manifesting their martial art from an elevated point of true heart, true mind and true spirit, which factors became characterized with the immense stature and quality of;  Simplicity.  Balance.  Pervacity.  Participation.  Humility.  Harmony.  Essence.
  • 5. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 5  Mindfulness  Patience  Depth.  Virtue.  Presence. together with other incidental attributes. Conversely, to them the point of martial arts ceased to be perceived and approached as a mere factor of methodology, style and technique but rather, the devine process of holistic function and participation enjoining the purest elements of;  Mind.  Heart.  Spirit.  Body.  Nature.  Creation.  Energy.  Universe. which elements all existing interdependently, in harmony, in balance and in wholeness. Furthermore, they becoming the individuals who abandoned the elements of self concept, ego, illusions and fragmented mind, thus and inevitably acquiring a true state of;  Great Mind.  Great Heart.  Great Spirit which became translated and manifested in the ambits of love, humility, accommodation, simplicity and peace. Therefore with this brief description, the student(s) are urged and motivated to place their higher vision, heart and mind into having a commitment in their study and training, and try to emulate the unique and grand achievements and virtues of the masters by following in their footsteps in;  Body.  Mind.  Emotions.  Heart.  Spirit. And consequently and so that overtime, they can attain the incredible condition and dispensation of beneficial essence, vision and profoundness in life and in the Universe, which they can share and serve humanity with. [O]nce the experience of consciousness is realized, one would never be the same again. When one is aware of his giftings, unique purpose and worth, he should go out into the world to serve and fulfill his own purpose for his own generation and position in the Universe…." THE VOCATIONAL STATURE OF THE SENSEI. (SHIMEIKAN) When all the preceding qualities have been taken in and internalized, it will become very much clear that a Sensei is the second best in position from the master and to the student(s) because he is basically the bridge between the master(s) and the student(s). Wherefore, what it actually takes to become a Sensei certainly entails a plurality of ingredients and factors including the technical know-how. Therefore, the factual ability to merely know how to kick and punch or winning a tournament is not an absolute defining criteria and character of a Sensei. Once more, one should have a point of higher knowledge and depth understanding of the apparent and simple truths that are inherent in the martial arts. Therefore, with such an ability and quality the individual will be poised to realize that there is an immense and vast difference in the point and fact of just knowing the techniques, other than the subtle philosophy and wisdom behind all these which is inherent in the estate of martial arts. However, some individuals will unwisely and definitely claim to have the attitude and aptitude of true understanding and yet, not having acquired the distilled remarkability of going beyond the apparent facets of such knowing and understanding, which faculty and fabric is an essential element in the constitution of the Sensei. The martial arts essence is consisting of the pervasive depth and meaning that which can and does elude anyone who approaches it with a superficial intellect, zeal, attitude and compartment of the ego. Therefore, it is important and obligatory to be able to distinguish and grasp the subtle grail, which is contained within the subtle essence of the martial arts. The pervasity and immensity of martial arts should be appreciated and absorbed with pure and open heart and mind, which are substantive characteristics towards the making of a true Sensei. This very fact stands out as it is and uncompromised at all. Therefore to persist in
  • 6. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 6 the culture of such denials, distortions and compromises is untanable and unfortunate, especially when it comes to the tenacity and tenets of development of the human mind and spirit in the martial arts. In view of the above, it is thus become possible to encounter three types of Sensei’s who are:  [Those] of small and shallow mind(s) and absolutely content and confined within their technical abilities and conformance, and ego.  [Those] of great mind(s) and certainly armed with broader perceptions, vision and integrity, perceiving all things in the pervasive potential, ingenuity and wholeness.  [Those] of skewed and arrogant mind(s) who are obsessed with personal ego, ambition and self interest at the expense of holistic viewing, adherence, participation and teaching of martial arts in its trueness. Thence, their mind(s) is absolutely limited to the circumference of their ego than martial arts. The Sensei(s) of great mind are very few and rare indeed, because these are exceptional individuals who are never content with the platitude of a single style, concept, conventionality, and constraining philosophy. They actually go beyond the very style and concept in order to attain the highest point of tapestry, essence of synergy, placement, complementation in order to reach the panacea of truth and conscious perspectives in martial arts. On the other hand, those of small mind, to them the concepts and issues of innovation, transformance of perspectives, complementation, synchronization and exploration of concepts, techniques and principles is not acceptable because more than not, such an adventure constitutes an immense obstacles to their limited view and potential in the substantive nature of martial arts. In essence they lack the quality of resourceful faculty, expanded mind and exponential intelligence. This unfortunate position is basically founded in the fact of fear to embrace the unknowable change of mind, heart and spirit. Basically, to absorb innovative thinking and mind, cause fear in them, because such an attitude has the powerful potential of exposing their point of ignorance which then is disturbing to their comfort zone. Fundamentally, the very process becomes gnawing and judge mentality, questioning their outworn and upheld notions of technical superiority and capacity within their respective martial art style. Such an attitude and repose is depriving both the concerned Sensei and prospective students, in that it robs or deprives the student(s) of the quality of exponential learning, growth and technical diversity in the dynamics of martial arts, because an apple seldom falls away from the tree. It is through this argument and point of view that students are urged to be consistently on the lookout, alert and above all, to seek what is most beneficial to themselves in terms of technical and artistic growth and advancement in the ways of the martial arts. Rather than to engage and adhere to the persuasions of name and brand of the style and reputations of the person(s) because in life, one should not judge the depth of a well by merely looking at the surface of the water. THE VARIOUS ROLES OF THE SENSEI. (YAKU) The Sensei as an ordinary person who has social and professional obligations, in that he has a personal, social and professional life which he must attend to and at the same time consider the interests of the martial arts students who are under his care. Basically, a Sensei should play various roles in that, to the student(s) he stands out as a role model, as an instructor, father, mother, friend, counselor, healer, mentor and guardian. Thence and foremost, he must have all the capacity and confidence to play all these roles, and to secure the confidence of his/her own students and the community. The issue of assuming the position of a Sensei should not be a fact of an event, but rather a process that which is infused with the primordial interest of rendering services to other people without favour, judgementality, anticipation of reward and self-seeking objectives. It is an office that requires self-sacrifice, understanding, empathy, compromise, compassion, generosity, humility and beneficial service to the vast interests and needs of the students. Therefore, the motive
  • 7. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 7 for profit, fame, popularity and self-ego actually defeat the fundamental essence of being a Sensei of martial arts and the profound principle of “to serve and to be of service”. [L]earn to do and to give all that which is within your own giftings and vision without a measure of qualification, for they are Mine. I have gifted everything in the Universe, differently and according to its measure, and for unique purposes ….” The inclination and viewpoint of making profit, fame and other objectives of self seeking, naturally and actually impairs, causes painful contradictions and discords within the realm, percepts and principles of martial arts. Martial arts is very much beyond what has been pointed out in the above, its all about;  Self Mastery  Self Knowledge  Compassion  Accommodation  Self Perfection  Unselfishness  Selfless Service  Humility [T]hose who are conscious of my OWN IMMENSITY will not fail to realize that in serving others they actually serve ME. For I am the total manifestation of all things. They would be content beyond measure in my dwelling for in their service greater than their life is the sacrifice…” THE ASPECT OF PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY (TSEKUGAKU) Proceeding from the above mentioned dispensation, its the essential vein of self application towards the goal of indiscriminate serving and helping of humanity. The very humanity that which is all around oneself. Therefore, the whole point is essentially about who you are, and your relationship with all that which is within and around you in the whole Universe. This a profound factor that which must be ingrained in the quality and character of the Sensei’s motives, intentions platitude of thinking, perspectives, objective and personal philosophy. If not, what then is the whole point and merit of becoming the Sensei of the martial arts? Basically a Sensei in the strict meaning and hallmark, is a teacher who is ingrained with the qualities of being a helper, inspirer/motivator, healer, counselor, friend, moulder, mentor and guardian, mother and father of the student (deshi). It is an extra ordinary office of noble trust, simplicity, knowledge, wisdom, compassion, humility, generosity, strength and guidance. ALL geared towards the development of the student(s) character, morals, mind and spirit through the holistic approach and participation of the;  Mind  Heart  Emotions  Body  Spirit Therefore it should not be permitted to become an office of pomposity, arrogance, self seeking and discords of money making and seeking of positions and fame. If these traits are allowed, then that would inevitably be the dilution and distortion of the essence of this remarkable office, and the spiritual nature that is inherent within it. Thence in the persuit of this grandeur it is stated thus: [B]y seeking the grail of perfection and wisdom in the masters, it is then that we can attain the wisdom of being true and luminated teachers, and gaining the glimpse of what is ordinary untold, in being what we ought to be ……” It is therefore, crucial that all the aspirants should make a point of reference to the inherent nature, virtues and characteristics, and essential qualities found in the masters, in order to achieve an adequate balance between what is best and worthy to pursue in the context and appropriate perceptions and perspectives. It is also vital to critically examine the basic purpose of ones intentions, potentials and ultimate objectives before one can respond to the callings of the office of the Sensei. This task of self examination is very important and will ensure that one can avoid assuming same with the falsehood of mind, intentions and character. Otherwise, one would certainly miss the essential meaning of depth, meaning of truth and meaning of the pervasive morality,
  • 8. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 8 conscience and spiritually inherent in the martial arts dimensions. It is definitely through the exercise and process of re- evaluation physically and mentally, morally and spiritually that an individual can comfortably stand with a conscience, consciousness and capacity that is not wanting or compromised as a Sensei, and shall further be armed with the competency to execute the intrinsic dispensations of this scared position. [I]N the way of this truth know much about your heart than your mind, and be the best of what you could be and serve the Universe according to the power of the gifting that you have. Then the Universe will celebrate in you and you will be magnified in your worth and purpose….” From this overview of the self then the typical type of a Sensei that you wanted to be shall inevitably emerge and manifested in the true point of conscious definement and substance. Though sometimes, such an ambition and state of affairs may cause a great and wider discrepancy between the truth that is inherent in the Ways of martial arts and to that which is upheld as one’s own truth and self perception. THE SPECIAL DUTY OF THE SENSEI. (ZEIKIN) On the whole, the Sensei is the soil with the necessary knowledge of martial arts and has the obligation to teach and to ensure that his students do attain a higher level of intellectuality, exponentiality and proficiency in the skills of techniques, philosophical articulation and understanding. Further more, in the pursuit of this enterprise and objective, he should also demonstrate impartial commitment, devotion and genuine concern in the welfare of all his students and this be combined with a full poise of responsibility towards all in his charge and dojo. This is a duty that is done without favour and/or expectation of rewards whatsoever. A Sensei must not and should not under any circumstance endeavor into the habit or tendency of distorting the aspirations, principles, percepts, truths of martial arts in order to please someone, to meet his or someone’s personal dispositions and/or expectations. Essentially, this lethargic teaching and mis-understanding of things will inevitably cascade with tremendous long term impacts, socially, intellectually, morally, mentally, physically and spiritually to those that the alleged teaching was meant to please or militate against. The aspects of truth in the martial arts is more than emphasized because it is the vital organ and powerful essence of martial arts. In as much therefore that, the Sensei should at least and at best avoid the issues that will ultimate result in the aspect of misguided teaching, misplaced teachings or under teaching of the student(s). Once such a condition of dysfunctional teaching is ingrained, it would become irreversible and very much be of detriment and disadvantage to the students. It is therefore prudent and essential that, in the teaching of any or every principle, precept and proposition, all the the students must be encouraged to do their indispensable research and contribution into the subject matter, so that the state of collective engagements and comprehensive learning, participation, exchange and development can or is attained grandly without a point of bias, skewedness and prejudice to vital interests and truths. The Sensei must consciously alert his students about the adverse effects of myopic perceptions and thinking especially when it comes to the fact that, any technical dexterity and achievement in the tournaments does not automatically qualifies and instills an individual to acquire the status of a Sensei. A true Sensei is more than the above definements of the technique, style and tournament because he is an absolute embodiment and repository of the remarkable and distinguished attributes of;  Wisdom.  Compassion.  Knowledge.  Understanding.  Demeanor.  Selflessness.  Truth  Silence.  Love  Intellectuality.  Observation.  Humility.  Simplicity.  Experience.  Mindfulness.  Awareness.  Ingenuity.  Pervasiveness.
  • 9. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 9  Patience.  Peace. With the above qualities and hallmark, the candidate will have the profound advantage of being an asset and mirror to the whole society and much more transformed beyond the ordinary facets of his being, and conversely shall achieving the essential point of the “true knowing”. The state of true knowing is very much beyond the apparent scope of ordinary dimensions of appreciating things because it is consistent with enlightenment. It is granted that, some Sensei’s are of the compelling view that students should definitely be superior in the scope of combat and techniques before they become a Sensei. Those who don’t excel shouldn’t be considered to qualify for the position of the Sensei. This viewpoint may be sound and provisionally valid but subject to and it contains extreme limitations. The fact of combat ability is not entirely an exclusive determining factor more so that, such a state is dependent on the physiological attributes rather than the mental and intellectual cultivation and enlightenment, which are very crucial in the martial arts learning process. Secondly, the fulcrum of martial arts is not entirely based on combatative approach, but rather on the mental and spiritual approach whence the coherency of the body, mind and spirit are in full participation and at best play in order to acquire wholeness in the individual’s life, training and practice. This approach is quite crucial because it does not merely emphasize one plane of function over others. However, should the holistic approach be undermined and discarded that would inevitably results in an uncomfortable platitude and environment of which either, under teaching and misguided teaching takes precedent and predominance over the aspect of holistic comprehensive teaching and participation in the Way. [D]O not ever undermine, deny and constrain the unique gifts that the Universe has given you. Effect them with the commitments of truth and heart because their purpose and significance of their whatever end in the Universe is seldom known….” THE SPECIAL NATURE AND CHARACTER OF THE SENSEI. (SHEISHITSU) Another viewpoint that is very much expounded and espoused by some of the Sensei(s) is that of demonstrating the fact of popularity, publicity and fame before one can be deemed to be a Sensei. These aspects are good to cherish but and yet, what is their penultimate objective and how do they fit and suit or reconcile with the intrinsic grail of martial arts? If these traits are compatible with spiritual and moral grail of martial arts then they are fine. However and candidly stated, there is absolute doubt that they do in any way or manner with the ways of martial arts. It must be pointed out and emphasized that the correct and true teaching must be adhered to, otherwise the wrong impressions and misconceptions will be developed and cascaded to the novice, and innocent minds who would inter-alia come to believe and emulate that which is wrong. [T]hat which has reached the absolute point of great experience and embracement of the higher consciousness in the Way, does not need the mundane illusions of honour in order to become of their worth. Their worth and substance become derived in the fact of merging and celebration within the Universe...” Given the aforegoing it becomes quite clear that, the background of the purpoted Sensei in relation to his received teachings and learning, his depth and latitude of the appreciation of the philosophy behind and within the martial arts, become critically prominent and crucial. The essentiall ingredients that will determine or decide on the pattern of influence and scope of impact on the modality and depth of meaning, direction and essence of his martial art teaching to his students. However and notwithstanding the above, a true Sensei shall not endevour to allow his own student(s) to become like him but rather that they go beyond the context of what he is, by emulating the best of their own originality, excellence and brilliance. [I]N the substance of true teaching of Our Way, it is not best to permit that the masters be imitated by their student(s). Each must not compare itself and its worth with the other because they would loose focus on
  • 10. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 10 themselves. But rather they must acknowledge that each one is gifted with the uniqueness of mind, body and spirit, and must celebrate oneself in that condition of uniqueness….” Such a Sensei would utmostly endeavour with due diligence, effort and concern that the students do eventually discover who they are and their worth, what they are capable of in terms of their own potentials in life. [I]T is truly necessary that one should fully appreciate and be grateful of his own unique gifts, in this condition he would be comfortable and satisfied with who he is. It is only then that he can attain the incredible point and leverage of alignment, complementation and celebration of oneself, with people and things. Therefore, one should never compare himself with others but his own potentials and destiny thus he would have the greatness of inner worth and peace….” Prominently, the Sensei will edge forward and agitate that such student(s) should act and live in all that they can be in their lifetime, in terms of their dreams, academics, social and economic goals within the context and scope of truth, understanding, humility and dignity. [I]n honouring one’s teacher its not only about the fact of giving gold and praise but rather of giving him the gift of being the best of what you have become, more than what you were….” The true Sensei will go further to encourage through his teachings of the way of truth that, the student(s) should understand and appreciate their essence and be empowered to serve other human beings without favour nor reward because that is an inherent duty of the martial artist. All the teachings of the Sensei should be geared and focused with absolute clarity, purpose, meaning, depth and empowerment so that in so doing he does not concase or limit the truth in order to serve his own ulterior reasons or objectives nor enhance his ego-status: [T]he rewards of great and true teachings of the Way are true in the manifestation of what is not so much in the glitter on the person .… but rather on the humble knowledge that they are doing their best to progress in life with true knowing of the truth, and according to the percepts of our Ways, and what a satiating feeling to know and to be….” [I]t is better to be remembered for what you have done for people in your lifetime through your selfless service. It is in serving humanity and the creation that one can be of great service to God and the Universe….” THE IMPACT OF THE SENSEI ON THE STUDENT(S). (EIKYO) It is quite clear that student(s) should benefit more from his Sensei not only in terms of fighting ability but rather in the supreme state of transformance. They must attain the capacity of “being”, emotionally, morally, intellectually, mentally, spiritually, physically and socially by being transformed within the embrace of wholeness in life. Therefore, just as a Sensei sees himself in the master, the student also sees himself in the Sensei because in the ultimate end both are significantly one. IF NOT, THEN WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT AND THE WORTH OF HAVING A Sensei in one’s life? It is on this premise and rationalization that students should be made aware and be urged to consistently seek a teacher who will truthfully, honestly and diligently provide them with the provisions of fulfillment development, and advancement, intellectually, physically, mentally, morally and spiritually rather than to follow the brand-mark, mundane reputation and rhetoric based on the sentiments and superficiality of style. One the other hand, the Sensei is also urged and encouraged that in his teachings of the martial arts precepts and principles, should invoke the intensed desire, willingness, sacrifice and attitude to serve and to be of service to anyone who comes to him because the consideration of service is upfront and compelling in the martial arts. In so doing, the Sensei and the students would definitely discover the incredible underlying secret of the grail of humility, service and compassion to all mankind. Furthermore, they would attain the depth of understanding and endowment of expansiveness of meaning, centering, depth and wholeness that which is constantly within and around us:
  • 11. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 11 [I]t is not the truth that will make you whole, it is how you fit into it and make it your own point of ultimate essence and tranformances in the wonders of the Universe….” [Y]ou have no beginning nor the end, in the fact of defining yourself in the present potential becomes the greatest impediment towards your own incredible vastness in the Universe, Therefore, transcend the barriers of your own ignorance and ego in order to attain and see what otherwise has been considered to be the impossible….” In this respect the Sensei whether is great or small, must have a common duty, common sense, sincerity and passion to keep, impart and cherish this wondrous knowledge and legacy of martial arts, especially for those who are coming behind us bonded with the ultimate search and quest of this wonderful legacy. [I]t is important to do the very best that one can do for others, humanity and the Universe because we were all born to manifest the essence of God within us. In so doing, we unconsciously inspire and give to others the power to do the same….” Therefore both the Sensei and student(s) should fully appreciate the fact that the above condition can only come about when and if there are inner changing’s within our perceptions and perspectives about each other and nature and our position in the whole Universe. Conversely, a true and great Sensei will be measured and found in the power of knowledge, and its manifestation in the quality of the:  Mind  Heart  Emotions  Consicence  Spirit THE SPECIAL ENQUIRY BY THE SENSEI. (SHITSUMON) Whenever the Sensei is faced with the task of imparting the knowledge and the skills to the students, he should have his mind and faculties focused on these salient issues;  What knowledge and wisdom should appropriately be imparted in order to meet the general expectations of each student, and what will generate the fundamental point of awareness and exponentiation in them?  What are the best approaches and the skills that must be adopted in order to meet the above objective, and that such an approach will it meet the general anticipated standards within the time frame. Above all, that the style of the Sensei will it ultimately match and compliment that of the student’s unique personal style(s). In this very context, the Sensei must be honest and genuinely identify and accept his personal weaknesses and shortcomings.  What are the best and effective methods of learning, training and practice that should be put in place, modified and permitted within the time frame, which also can respond to the immediate potentials needs, expectations and situations between the Sensei and the student(s). THE ASPECT OF PERSONAL MASTERY (SHUTOKU) The Sensei must also bear in mind the fact that the student(s) that she is teaching and training must ultimately attain the point and condition of personal power and personal mastery within the realm of their martial arts. Therefore this condition in essence entails the fundamental ingredients of;  The innate will and intensions to acquire and expand the individual’s potentials and capacities to go beyond the current upheld self- perceptions and abilities.  The immense desire and the intensions to transcend the weaknesses and portals of inadequacy and ignorance. Thereby attaining a transformational point and momentum of depth of curiosity, power of awareness, application, pervasiveness, and broad measure of exponential thinking, function and experience.  The potential and the experience of being emancipated, inspired and
  • 12. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 12 directioned by the profound teachings and example of the Sensei, from the condition and quagmire of ignorance, confusion and indecision.  The desire to attain the penultimate conviction, position of view and influence, and powerful vision about the ultimate transcendent expectations and outcome, in the whole dimensions of the Universe. THE ATTAINMENT OF PERCEPTIONS (RIKAI) Once the above mentioned have been put in place, in order and channeled into the correct line of in built perceptions, perspective and inspiration, the Sensei should further advise the student(s) about the condition of abandoning the facets of;  Internal and preconceived notions, ideas, assumptions and misplaced perceptions and priorities.  Proscranations and self-defensive notions, and intellectual arrogance and egoism. Which factors are essentially inhibiting, limiting and frustrating the progressive action towards the attainment of sincere cultivation in the fact of knowledge, experience, wisdom and skill of martial arts. Conversely, the Sensei and the student(s) should work on the common understanding, common ground and common vision and purpose, and both must mutually agree and adopt a landscape that can produce and unleash the hidden and immense potentials of the student(s) by stancing on the correct;  Formats.  Long-term objectives.  Formalities.  Short-term goals Upon which to work on in order to achieve a point of desired or intended empowerment and expontial mastery in the practical way. Furthermore, the Sensei and the student(s) must compliment each other in their endeavor to set down the common ground for the emergence and prevalence of the dimensions of;  Insight and awareness.  Perspective and perceptions.  Personal knowledge and empowerment.  Synergistic relationships between the internal reality and the outer reality.  Exponential and transformative thinking and pro-action.  Identification and definitions of the critical and crucial priorities pertinent to the fact of one’s path in life. Given the above, the Sensei will certainly have the leverage and vantage to produce the student(s) who have the abundant mind that which has the tremendous potential and capacity to:  Achieve the fundamental new perception and retraining that abandons the parochial style interest, mindset and image by adopting an immense and pervasive viewpoint and embracement of the inherent diversity.  Celebrate the factual, distinctive diversities of the systems of the martial arts without losing the sight of the underlying synergetic essence and commonality, thus transcending beyond the feebling confines of sentimentalism of one’s style. THE POINT OF ABUNDANCY (HOFUSA) Whence, the cumulative impacts of the above mentioned will eventuate into a very unique condition in the student(s) in that, such student(s) will acquire a cultivated point and culture of having the essence of the;  Abundant Mind.  Abundant Heart  Abundant View.  Abundant Influence.  Abundant Emotions  Abundant Thinking.  Abundant Intelligence  Abundant Position.  Abundant Presence  Abundant (Inter) Action. which factors are crucial and catalystical towards the fact and process of the making of a new Sensei. It is conceded that, some individuals would not easily swallow this proposition and fact, in that these factors may not auger well with those who believe much in the slylisticness concept. However, such individuals and/or practitioners are persuaded
  • 13. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 13 to give opportunity and explore this line of reasoning and thinking as exposed herein, without meaning harm and disrespect to their own upheld notions and viewpoints. The main point be view in transformational learning, training and practice as is embraced and utilized in Oikado is essentially that, the student(s) should and must be taught and trained to be equipped with the essential and dynamic faculties and action to think and live out side the box of stylism in his martial arts systems. In order to accomplish what otherwise has been deem to be impossible, by being exponential thinkers, doers and human beings who are endowed with higher essence of effective transcendence physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, morally and socially. Therefore, the fact of transformationality as expantiated herein is to precipitate the fact to discover, utilize and manifest the fathoms of wholeness in the path of martial arts. It is further considered and conceded that, it is rather a miserable understanding by any Sensei and student(s), to teach and learn martial arts in the absolute entirety of kicking and punching, without first and foremost widening the circle of knowingness, and to go beyond the trusted techniques of the system. Therefore in the making of the Sensei, the contention and gravaman that the basic techniques of fighting are the ultimate best, is no longer sufficing and tenable in the context of this transformational system. Thence a contrary view and position shall be accommodated on this point especially to those who may be holding a different view but with some courtesy of reservation and reluctance on the merits of same in the cycle of contradictions. THE EMBRACING IMAGE AND NATURE OF THE SENSEI. (FUKUMU) The Sensei and the student(s) are basically one and the same thing and both must espouse the principle of integrity, sincerity and commitment in the fact of intensive and extensive;  Training  Research  Practice  Application  Analysis  Interpretation  Analogy  Conceptualization So that they can acquire the pervasive capacity of creative and exponential thinking and (Inter) action outside the box and the confinements of the concepts of stylism. From the above disposition and enterprise, they would become transcendent in the context of their broarder;  Knowledge  Growth  Experience  Wisdom  Enlightenment  Analysis  Comperativity  Creativity Which qualities are much lacking in the many who delved in the factum of entirely teaching martial arts in the technical context and environment. Wherefore it is propounded further that, both the Sensei and the student(s) should ascend into the realms of pervasive and deep critical teaching and learnership of martial arts, from the true point and dimension of awareness, wholeness and fullness. The Sensei and the student(s) should progress further into a point of acquiring and manifesting the factum of beneficial teaching and learning of the martial arts which platitude entails the essential considerations, ingredients and conditions of accommodating the fact that;  The Sensei should always bear in mind that, the very student(s) he is teaching and training the martial arts are in fact the masters of tomorrow who definitely seek to be better than him and to transcend the image that they emulate. Therefore, the Sensei must teach them with all candour, devotion and fact of worthiness, and abundant knowledge, wisdom and mutual celebration.  The Sensei should be permitting the fact that the student(s) become engaged into the actual process of teaching others the techniques, principles, philosophy and teachings of their martial arts whilst within the ambits of the Sensei supervision and the school. The significant truth and power behind this dispensation, is that the students concerned do acquire a better leverage of
  • 14. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 14 understanding and believing in themselves because at best, everyone learn better when she/he is teaching others and living what is being taught. Conversely, such students would ultimately acquire a finer point of expansive awareness, creative application and the manifestation of their creative force, self-knowledge, self-contentment and celebrance. Given the above main factors, both the Sensei and the student(s) would further appreciate the fact that in the making of the Sensei, numerous variables and principles become directly and vicarious involved, and invigorated in the varying measures and intensities. This is so in order to produce a dynamic faculty, character and personality of the individual. Some of these special variables and precedent conditions entail the following;  When one teaches others he learns better and becomes more empowered in all the aspects of intellect, faculties, performances and expression which then become grounded on the point of essence understanding. Being more understood and in trustworthiness, thus promulgating the pervasive fact of appropriate influence, appropriate capacity, appropriate contribution and participation, and appropriate difference within and beyond the factors of the;  Circles of influence  Circles of concern  Circles of indifference  Circles of prejudice  Circles of bias  When the student(s) become precipitated and urged to become the teachers of what has been taught, they become transformed in their pervasive point of awareness and understanding of all the things that are there to be and on how they ought to be. From this position of transformances they would begin to live that which they have learnt and practiced thereby becoming grander students who will follow with the point of creative wisdom, patience and humility.  The Sensei and the student(s) when in the proper context of true self application in martial arts, they would realize that it is but a thin line that which separates each other, and that both must exist in the fact of mutuality and co-efficiency. The fact of being a true teacher lies in the power of the teacher seeing himself in the student(s) and for the students in their teacher. Therefore, both the Sensei and the student(s) must celebrate each other and their worth in the point of consensus.  When the Sensei imparts his knowledge, same must be quality knowledge which has the capacity to empower the intellect of the student(s) and qualitatively elevating the status of knowledge and awareness of the student(s). So that such student(s) can gain the maximum leverage of being quality teachers of tomorrow in their own right, initiation and intellectual potential.  When the Sensei is engaged in the critical process of empowering his/her student(s), there must be the immense focus and dynamic effort on enabling the very student(s) to unleash the dynamic underplay of their own; Intelligence. Visualization. Talents. Potential. Opportunities. Capacities. Rationalization. Exponentiality Which must all be integrated into a magnificent point and efficacy of realizing and manifesting the powerful influence of the individual(s) creative force. This creative force is very crucial for the outburst of the individuals conditions of exponentilality that which permeates with decisive and profound impacts on the student(s);
  • 15. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 15  Personality  Character  Abundant Mind  Abundant Heart The Sensei and the student(s) must actually and definitely believe in what they are learning, training and practicing. Precisely, the Sensei must have a stronger and bolder belief in the very teachings of martial arts that which he/she espouses and imparts to others. The fact of belief in oneself is the most critical quality in the process of making the Sensei and same can be reinforced through diligent study and practice. If not, what then is the point of being a Sensei and to begin with, isn’t this the fact of blunt fallacy. It must be understood that in the matters of martial arts, the fact of conscience does matter because of one’s conscience is the repositions of the truth(s) of martial arts. Further to the above, the Sensei and the student(s) must note and acknowledge that, if their conviction is strong, bold and informed then their abundant mind will yield immense influence of creativity, wisdom, character, competence and wholeness because the main truth is that, each one of us gives his/her own life to that which he/she believes in. Basically, it all centers on the fact of choice and the point of appropriate awareness and understanding.  The Sensei and the student(s) must acquire the fundamental aptitude to realize that life is not a career but rather a process of attaining the purpose of existence. Therefore, the point of such understanding and through the teachings of martial arts, they must be able to confer and affirm the fact of validation of each other’s potentials, efforts and worth so that everyone can celebrate his or her own uniqueness in the dojo, and in life and in the pervasive point of holistic embracement.  When the Sensei is teaching the student(s) he/she should have in the upper mind, the fact that the quality of his knowledge and teaching would be the catalyst and pivotal instrument that can invigorate and sustain the student(s) change, focus, creativity and leverage towards the attainment of best standard performance, discipline and converging point of inner change. In this very context, same must capacitate, precipitate and transcendence over the prevailing and limiting mindset by attaining a transformative point of understanding, view, articulation and expression so that they become imaginatively brilliant, creative and functionally. Thus becoming more boundless in the environment of higher intelligence, self definitions and effective participation.  When the Sensei is with the student(s), he must at all time stimulate and sustain them in an environment that which is grounded in the principles of creative; Participation Consultation Consensus Mutual Respect Celebration of each other. And at the same time being fully aware of the competing tendencies of the positions of the Sensei and that of the student(s). Thence the status of credibility and pervacity can be manifested and maintained without any effort and coercion. The distinctness will be experienced in a subtle of minds. THE VITAL STATURE AND QUALITY OF STUDENT(S). (HINSHITSU) When the Sensei is teaching and assisting the student(s) in the whole scope of training and practice, the special focus should not be entirely on the external flair of techniques. In that, they shouldn’t dilute, hyprocritize and overlook the underpinning meaning, essence and wholeness of the various aspects inherent in what is actually being executed. Therefore, the special emphasy should be entrusted, sustained and articulate in and on the fundamental premise that, the higher essence in the study of martial arts is to appropriately,  Train  Practice  Research  Analyse  Meditate  Apply
  • 16. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 16 assertively with an open mind, complete awareness, resourcefulness, passionate heart and vision, and true spirit. Inherently, the Sensei and the student(s) will over time realize the inherent contradictions and pressure of conflict in all their endeavors. That which must be resolved, pacified and overcomed in the mind. Thence, one’s mind must always be resilient, pervasive and resourceful within the framework of synergism. The Sensei should further note and appreciate the fact that once the conditions of exponentiality had been acquired by the student(s), such student(s) will be capacitated with an immense attribute and endowments that are consisting of;  The power of freedom.  The power of choice.  The power on intelligence.  The power of artistic essence.  The power of expression.  The power of boundlessness. Which of ingredients are fundamental in the production and capacity of self determination, realisation in the context of martial arts. Correspondingly and with great impacts, the above endowments will enable the student(s) to become more than ever, to be beyond the concept, technique, strategy and the general confines of the style (box) and thus attaining a sustainable position and condition of being exponentially dynamic and boundless. On the overall, the Sensei and the student(s) should inter-alia realize that in the very process of training, learning and internalizing the martial art’s techniques, principles, teachings, precepts, theories and forms they should have distinctness. This distinctness will be experienced in a subtle point of immense space, which divided what is there in the box of martial arts and the appropriate response(s) to same exponentially. Both the Sensei and student(s) whenever they indulge in their learnership and practice they must invoke the use of the fundamental powers so that they can acquire the extraordinary eloquence of function and mastery over time. • 18. This is Oikado… The Making of the Sensei. 18 It must be noted that in the province of the subtle space, lies the ground of the tremendous power of choice that which the respective student(s) must use, resort to and invoke in order to be allowing. In that the said martial arts, could bear any value and meaning unto himself. Thence it be noted that the power of choice lies in the heart of the student(s). It is this latent power that each student should be encouraged to utilize with consciousness and wisdom, and with considered discretion and responsibility because such power can impact on one’s destiny in all the facets of one’s life. Therefore, both the Sensei and the student(s) can through the fact of using this latent power, become more than what they are, and before they can attain the creative influence over their environment and life. Therefore, in whatever the choice and decision that the Sensei and the student(s) can make, these fundamental powers will always be sounding in the context and ambit of being positive or negative, and thus demanding the factum of responsibility and intelligent sincerity. THE POINT OF TRANSFORMATION (HENKA) When the above ingredients had been imbued and integrated in the scope of training and practice, they would essentially transform the nature of the student(s). They would provide new defined dimensions of the;  Mind  Heart  Emotions  Spirit  Body which are the five basic and universal dimensions of being whole. Out of this very fact and ground of attainments, the same student(s) would transcend further into the levels of higher consciousness, participation and interactiveness. It is a standing principle in Oikado that, the Sensei and the student(s) should always maintain a sustainable balance and condition of intense training, practice and integration of the body, mind and spirit through the vision of transforming their essential nature. Once there is this change in the point of wholeness rather than fragmentations would be experienced and manifested, so that each and everyone can acquire the immense capacity and fundamentality, and essence of  Meaning  Creativeness  Greatness within their scope of sequential development in  Personality  Character  Intellectuality  Intelligence  Artisticness  Exponentiality which factors in the ultimate, totally translate into the acquisition of the dynamic state and essence of realizing the profound manifestation of the creative force. And its inherent qualities of advancement into the point of the higher self, which is the greatest and unsurpassed gift of difference that anyone can ever aspire for and acquire in the realms of martial arts. essentially that the above become the integral quality and process of approaching the leadership, scholarship and mastery in Oikado. It is imperative for the Sensei and the student(s) to realize further that the fundamental essence of Oikado entrities both to engage in the study, training and practice of martial arts with an absolutely emolument heart, mind and spirit by embracing holistically and contentedly the aspects of the techniques, faculty and scholarship with the quality of embracement and indulgence. Thus they would quickly gain the immense power and capacity of master minding the whole reservoir of the martial art resources thus achieving a profound and resourceful ground upon which to exponentiate into higher levels of difinements and definity. It must be borne that such a commitment is very crucial because it would lead to greater and splendid grounds that which eventuate into impacting the deeper dimensions of the  Heart  Mind  Emotions  Spirit  Body

Other than to have a tacit ground that produces in substance, dyfunctionality, vagueness and wooly attainments in ones martial arts. In the cumulative effect of transformance, great dimensions of reformations and re- formulatives will take ground and that such a Sensei and student(s) can definitely stand out balanced, empowered and in total awareness of the differing points of the outer reality and the inner reality. And thereon, they would begin to profoundly experience the immense elements of;  Real Synergy  Real Participation.  Real Difference.  Real Inter-Action  Real Magnificence  Real Contribution  Real Significance  Real Substance  Real Presence  Real Greatness  Real Worth With an unending quality and choice of the mind, heart, emotions, spirit and conscience which are the truthful and holistic cornerstones and hallmark of the discipline of martial arts. [I]n Our Way, the individual must always be aware and appreciate the fact that he is standing between the Earth and Heaven, in the centre of the Universe by being part of the whole. Therefore, to dwell in all these dimensions one must give out unresevedly his own heart and mind….” The Sensei of substance will not be much focused on the fact of his own advancement in terms of rank status and large studentry. He must be fully focused and committed into the fact of teaching others, his own study and practice which factors will enhance his own quality and substance of worth. Therefore, it is imperative to point out that in the fact of attaining higher rankings(s) in the martial arts, the promodial factors that are essentially considered are as follows;  What is the extent and depth of ones contribution towards the fact of teaching students and others the very discipline of martial arts. Conversely, the turnover point of such students into higher levels of gradings in the martial arts becomes crucial.  What intellectual contribution does one give into the intellectual realm of the martial arts, in the context of theory, philosophy, application and social participation and development(s).  What is the extent and measure of ones contribution in the overall activities of the martial arts in the context of tournaments, gradings, training others and organization.  What is the context and measure of ones active interest and participation in the advancement of martial arts in the technical, theoretical, intellectual, social context, and as an instrument of empowerment to the general society and humanity. Once the Sensei is aware of these vital ingredients he will stand out unique and assured that he or she will capture the attention and recognition that will merit same, to be advanced into the higher ranking status in the fellowship of martial arts. The above position is very simple to appreciate in that, in life the more you give into something the more the rewards become harvested, this is a principle of life and it can not be changed nor negotiated. The Sensei and the student(s) should note and realize that transformational teaching, training and practice as expounded in the Oikado martials and urges the manifestation(s) of the effective change of paradigm to transcend with eloquence the limiting structures of the technique(s) and stylism. It ushers the dawn of new beginnings in the essence of perceptions, thinking and interactions in the culture and discipline of martial arts.
  • 21. This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei. CHAPTER TWO THE TRANSCENDENT STUDENT(S), FUNDAMENTALS [I]n the ways of our Way the seeker of the truth is unbounded in mind and heart, he goes beyond the fact of illusions and content of his own ignorance for he does not seek with the persuasions of his ego and mind, but of the heart and spirit. The incredible wonder and brilliance that which is there can only be comprehended in pureness and emptiness of the mind and spirit…” THE CONVERGENCE OF STUDENT(S) PERCEPTIONS (RIKAI) The Sensei should always anticipate a critical point of convergence in the development of the student(s) under his charge, which condition would manifest the fact of transcendence in the student(s). In this stage, a noticeable change would be observed in the student(s) within the inner and outer dimensions, bringing about a condition of effectiveness and clarity in the subtle qualities of;  Analysis  Vision  Talent  Power  Equanimity  Participation  Balance  Centering  Wholeness  Mindfulness  Silence  Patience  Alignment  Passion  Courage  Conscience  Principle  Presence Which factors are inherently found in the heart, mind and body of person who has experienced the fact of inner shiftings. These very SHIFTINGS ARE IMPACTED UPON AND IMMENSELY BY THE POWER OF AWARENESS THAT WHICH IS FOUND AT THE DEEPER LEVELS OF THE HEART, MIND AND BODY. Once this point of transformance is realized, the student(s) would have delved beneath the surface of his person and attained a position of reflection on who he is inside thus causing same to regain the substantive essence, sense and capacity of being aware of his own “being” and specialness as a seeker of the higher truth in the way of martial arts.
  • 22. This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei. It is also pointed out to the Sensei that, once the inner shiftings had been effected in the student(s), that very aspect will go all the way down to remove the aspects of inner conflict and bring about the effective point of inner realization of a reality beyond the physical context in the third attention. Thereby causing the impetus and moment of pacification and emancipation from the painful inhibitions and consequences from;  The cycle of ignorance  The cycle of denial  The cycle of Ego  The cycle of alienation  The cycle of illusions  The cycle of obsession  The cycle of attachment  The cycle of prejudice  The cycle of hopelessness  The cycle of inadequacy  The cycle of violence  The cycle of fear  The cycle of aversion  The cycle of opinionation. Thence as a seeker, he would come and arrive at the point of spiritual realization and essence in a vision beyond the dimensions of any reality. Conversely, a student in this condition would emerge without a desire, a will and need for the notions, sense and instincts of hostility, resentment, fear, anger, animosity, self doubt, hopelessness and violence because in the deeper point of his heart, mind, spirit and body, he would have glimpsed and delved in the essence of peace and worth that is found nowhere else other than within. It is therefore through this significant transformation within, that the student(s) would gain the powerful entrance and abidance in the condition of unique reformation. It must also be stated that, once the student(s) has gained this ascendance into the inner chamber of reformation, the fact of inner shift and realization will cause the hallmark of;  Spiritual Realization,  Spiritual Value,  Spiritual Force,  Spiritual Vision,  Spiritual Participation. That which is very much immense, precise and dynamic, and effectively going far deeper into removing the superficial emotions and personality of the student. This state going far deeper into the heart of reality thereby changing the whole equation of perceptions and perspectives of the student(s). Consequently, such student(s) will further attain a supreme condition of depth of complete awareness and essence that which would cause the precipitation and the gathering of the power of change. When the power of change has taken over, the placid conditions of wholeness would be acquired and bringing about the manifestation of;  Physical Intelligence  Emotional Intelligence  Spiritual Intelligence  Mental Intelligence  Moral Intelligence  Universal Intelligence Which would take deep root and precedence in the essence of the abundant heart, mind, spirit and conscience within the finer fabrics and provinces of pure;  Silence  Pacification  Knowing  Healing  Humility  Harmony  Participation  Prayerfulness  Service  Peace In the vastness of the present and the Universe. These elements and power can only be found at the deeper levels of the heart, mind and body that has been transformed. Wherefore, the Sensei must always appreciate the fact that, once the student(s) has attained this status of transcendence, the student(s) would have directly, absolutely and decidedly broken down all the barriers of the circle of ignorance, definements and limitations which fact of attainment is very much pivotal and precedent in the process of making the Sensei. The transcendent student(s) will further exhibit the subtle essence of incredible attributes, characteristics, propensity, sense of worth and profound personality that which is contained and expressed in the whole state of;  Beautiful Mind.
  • 23. This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.  Beautiful Heart.  Beneficial Presence.  Limit  Dynamism.  Discipline  Standards  Reformation  Vibrancy  Pervasive Purpose  Beneficial Participation Which are the deeper points of enlightenment, inner peace, and power of awareness and awakening. Therefore, when the student(s) is armed with the above attributes, he will certainly standout to be distinctly endowed with the irreversible quality of immense exponentiation and personal power and mastery in his martial arts. This state will be combined with the fact of total inspiration and vision in life. When all these have been cumulated, their total impact in the mind and heart of the student(s) would make same to ultimately achieve what otherwise had been considered the impossible in one’s life. That which is the extraordinary fact of living with the brilliance of true mind, hear, spirit and transcendent perceptions. Furthermore, the Sensei should always insist on the student(s) to maintain a true position of total abstinence and zero tolerance to the use of alcohol, drugs and other substances that which may adversely impact the nature and quality of life. Furthermore, the student(s) must fully appreciate the fact that they do have a social, moral and legal duty to help all those who fight the abuse in whatever form of drugs, because all life must be nurtured and preserved accordingly. THE TRANSCENDENT INTERACTIVE TRAINING AND PRACTICE (KOERU) The student(s) should necessarily be exposed to the below overarching teaching and interactive training framework. This exposure is vital in order that they become engrossed with technical concordance, diversity, variability and exponentiality, depth and essence of self-efficacy in relation to the various aspects of techniques, strategies, applications and expression. The fact of their regimentation should be intensive and extensive in order that their powerful point of potential and exponentiation can be released with frugality of dynamic significance and magnificence in context of form and formless. Therefore, the Sensei must ensure that he canvasses the structural layout in order to complete the very process of making a blackbelt student. Similarly the student(s) should ensure that such an exposition is given to them during their learnership and training phases. However, in the event of human limitations being present in the capacity of the Sensei, respecting any of the structures laid out, the Sensei should not hesitate to enlist the assistance of other Sensei(s) who may have adequate competency in the particular area of deficiency. Conversely, once the student(s) realizes this caveat, they should consult with their Sensei and seek supplementation or resort to schools that offer specialization on that particular aspect. This condition is acknowledged because of the dynamic principle of common but differentiated capability and capacity which is inherent in Oikado. Therefore, the regimentation process should proceed as following:  Theory(s)  Philosophy.  The First Attention  Technique(s)  FORM(S)

  • 29. This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.  THE CONCEPT OF STYLISM AND EXPONENTIALITY. (YARUKATA) The Sensei should advert the student(s) to the issues and fact of the concept of the style and stylism. The starting point is to show the historical evolution of respective style(s) and then their substantive development into which new concepts, interpretations and preferences became attached and ingrained into the new or existing creation. In synopsis, the Sensei and the student(s) should be aware of the fact that a style is composed of the skills, techniques, values, principles and philosophy inherent to its character. Basically, a style is made up of a group of preferred techniques and skills which had been created and borrowed elsewhere, incorporated and aligned to format and formulate a distinct methodology of creative function, application and conceptualization, which then is circled in the concept of a style. Essentially, there is no style that which is pure or original. All styles emerged from other styles thence in their nature and context are hybrid characters, thus the reason that there are more of commonalities than differences. It is incumbent to find some martial artists placing much focus of their time, energy and intellect into the fact of trying to define, defend and maintain their stylism. Thence such individuals are considered as conformist and positionaries. But then there are those martial artists who transcend the circumference of the style(s) by becoming visionaries, innovators and revolutionaries. These are considered to be the transcendentalist because their dynamic perceptions go beyond the limitation of the style. It is the transcendentalists who outgrow the fact of definement, confinement and limitations of their own style(s), and bring about new dimensions of concepts, methods, technique, theories, principles and application in the context of new martial art styles or systems. The Sensei and the student(s) should further note and bear in mind that, due to the above dispensation one would find that the dichotonomy emerges and exists between the;  Stylist (positionary),  Non – stylist (visionary) and this position has been prevalent throughout the history and nature of martial arts. Therefore, the Sensei and the student(s) should not come into a point of surprise to find that there are those martial artists who find their absolute worth and substance in the fact of stylism and assertion of the superiority of their own style(s) over others. In the same tone undermining other systems. This position though deplorable, is premised along the factors of viewing the nature and essence of martial arts in the narrower scope of intellect and mindset. A mindset of this nature is more limiting and posing denial of the pervasive interconnectedness and wholeness of martial arts. [A]nd what a sadness it is to see an insect fall into a cup of milk and in that act sounding in its contentment that, it has inherited the absoluteness of the Universe...” On the other hand, the Sensei and the student(s) would observe that the martial artists of great mind, regenerated thinking and interactive focus would regard the fact of a style to be a collection of tools and structures. And that these enables the practitioner to transcend to higher and deeper dimensions of physical, mental, moral, intellectual and spiritual empowerment, worth and sustainability. Their minds and essence of intellectuality had outgrown the boundaries of the style (stylism) by becoming exponential, creative and pervasive thinkers, innovators, creators and philosophers who are beyond and out of the ordinary because they have acquired the unboundness of true mind and spirit. [T]he mind that has attained its creative essence and potential can not be compromised and stalled. When motivated by its own powerful vision it would go into the infinitive Universe to acquire its incredible substance and reality…”
  • 30. This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei. Conversely, an open-minded Sensei will definitely teach the student(s) to attain a true condition and position of exponential thinking and action, regenerative mind and concepts, creative function and participation, attainments of personal empowerment and originality rather than to make them become ritualistic, mechanical and structures of comformity in what they are learning, training and practicing in the context of the martial arts and from him. THE NATURE AND STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF THE STYLE. (KOSEI) The Sensei and student(s) must always appreciate the fact that a style has several modules or segments that which a student(s) should study, train, practice and apply before same can advance into the next advance stage. These units are vital segments or sections that must be mastered before one can graduate into the position of being a complete and competent student in his martial arts. Some of these modules can be long or short, and can cover a wide range of theories, applications, skills and techniques but then the main point being to give the student the fact of diversity, exponentiality and comprehensibility through the fact of interactive training and practice, which would produce a point of dynamic competency. Generally, an experienced Sensei will have the ability to instantly identify any student in his class and collates same with some particular module(s) in order that, the concerned student can fit in out rightly, while in others the progression may not be the case or similar. Given the above, it is also pointed out that the modules that are presented can not suit each and every student. Some students will be good at some modules while others will not. This is due to the principles of common but differentiated ability and capacity because each individual has his unique potentials. These then translate into standard performance variance(s), to interact and entertaining variances. Furthermore, the student(s) should be urged to entertain with other students from different styles or systems, the point being that, out of this creative exercise the very student(s) would acquire an immense opportunity and capacity of;  Comparative observation and analysis.  Comparative leverage and modifications.  Comparative perceptions and exponentiality. which comes from the fact of exchange of techniques, skills, theories and concept. In truth, there shouldn’t be any condition of phobia(s) and bias because from ancient times this position has been the trend that impacted on how the martial arts developed to the present day. In the same theme, the student(s) should also be adverted to the fact that the condition, position and stature of masterhood does not become acquired from a single source, style, teacher and philosophy. All these ingredients must blend and integrate in order produce the grand status and quality of variability, and the ultimate best of the product out of oneself. Therefore, the student(s) is encouraged to spread out his learning and training landscape so as to be inclusive rather than exclusive and selective because nothing is irrelevant and inessential. Once the student(s) have gained this very capacity and propensity, they would definitely become endowed with the achievement, experience and exponentiation of;  Diversity of thinking and wisdom.  Diversity of function and application.  Strategically perceptions and perspectives.  Centredness and roundness.  Depth and Wholeness. Rather than the facest of superficiality and constraintment from the limitations of boundaries occasioned by their preferred style or system. Furthermore, the student(s) should realize that styles are tailored differently in order to meet varied conditions, Objectives, preferences and activities thence one would find that styles or systems are of;  Full contact or non-contact nature.
  • 31. This is Oikado…. The Making of the Sensei.  Combatative or non-combatative nature. And furthermore, that some styles can adopt the preferential plane or symentry of linear, circular, and or a combination thereof. But what is of great significance is the fact that the student(s) should transcend the limiting perception of the style and methodology so that they can gain the point of absolute originality, ingenuinity, creative thinking and function in the state of Artlessness. THE ESSENCE OF TRANSCENDING INITIATIVES IN TRAINING (SHINSHU) The study and the training in the martial arts should not be a fact of division and skewed perceptions. It must be a volatile process that invigorates the powerful potential to become a better person in the community, society and the world. It should also provide the ambience of critical and right thinking, action and intentions for the beneficialness of all humanity. Thus touching on the foundations of true consciousness within oneself, thereby transcending into the higher realities in life and of oneself. In the ways of the Oikado, it is known and acknowledged that in order to transform into these heights it is not an overnight thing, because it takes an aspect of an extraordinary initiative to do so overtime. However, the most essential requirement in an individual is to acquire the potential to be the seeker of the truth, to have the courage and the desire to embrace and to serve it, then all things will begin to fall into place. Therefore and given this huge dispensation as found in the ways of Oikado, the imperative is that the teachings and the training, the practice and the application of Oikado should always be done in the best ways and with the most tenent of graciousness to the mind, body and spirit. The signifance of this approach is to allow the gradual realization and maturation into the discipline that which has an overwhelming and profound impacts on the character and personality of the individual. Thus the significance being understood and appreciated as a way that is integral into ones life. Therefore, Oikado does encourage the vitalistics of;  Giving acknowledgement and validity to all martial arts styles and teachings.  Encouraging that the growth and maturation of the student(s) can only be guaranteed when same are permitted to study and train in other styles and tradition in order to acquire the great experience of being and diversity  The realizations that when all things are done with open mind(s), virtues heart and questing spirit, there is no barrier that is too great and impossible to overcome. Thus in the leanership and practice of the martial are everyone should transcend the perception of the self, preference(s) and preconceived notions so as to allow the overwhelming experience of wholeness and boundlessness. It is further pointed out that, given the magnificence of the teachings as found in this discipline of Oikado, absolute devotion in the intellectual exercise and physical exercise should be done with the depth of affinity and conscious commitment. The Sensei and the student(s) would in the course of their social and martial arts interaction meet those who will disavow the nature, meanings and significance of these teachings. But then, in whatever situation and the end, no one should be discouraged because sometimes to breakdown the walls of ignorance, annoyance and self ego takes more than an act of teaching and of experience. Therefore, one should extend one’s compassion and understanding to all those whose point of view may hold out differently. But if none is in silence and not contradicting such teachings, it should be understood that same is affirming them and may not have not the courage, the sincerity and the boldness to openly say so. The reasoning to all the above is grounded on the fact that, many of us fear so much to be change because on the substance of

Therefore, all those who are in the ways of our martial arts should attain ultimately, the full realization that at the bottom of all things it is more about oneself and the power of regaining one’s divine consciousness, thus entering into the transcending reality. The truth is therefore this, the Sensei and the student(s) should always view and maintain the transcended position and acknowledgement that;  The techniques of the style, character and nature are basic tools and springboard towards the attainment of higher mind.  The leanership of martial arts should transcend the barriers, structures, concepts and cultures of the style and tradition so that the powerful dispensations of great and true experience could be attained.  Through true experience, effectiveness the overwhelming consciousness can be acquired and utilized in order to eventually become the first of the many to reach, embrace and integrated into the Universal Consciousness, through one’s absolute potential of the hearts, mind and spirit. Conversely, the student(s) who have right thinking capacity and profound faculty should not, and entirely be content with the superficiality of the techniques, styles and traditions but rather, of the substance therein that which can and does empower them to become completely different and be dwelling in their greatness in the dimensions of their hearts, mind and spirit without half measures and pretences. In the overall, the student(s) in the martial arts should be guided by the powerful realization and conviction which inter-alia contains these fundamental truths and principle in that;  The words that are uttered will certainly shape one’s future.  The thinking one has will impact on the reality that is currently experienced.  Whatever that which is being thought of will certainly produce a new reality.  Whatever action or omission done will certainly impact on the definements and meaning of one’s destiny.  That in truly believing in something and deeply committed into it, that will manifest it ultimate reality in one’s lifetime.  That when doing something and in the deeper point of sincerity and vision, it will begin to manifest itself in one’s character and personality as a profound reality. When the above mentioned had been internalized, the full process of transformation will gain deeper and greater momentum in one’s martial arts, and thus redefining the student(s) mind heart and spirit with unique and powerful quality that which is beyond the finest. Therefore once this very point is attained, the emergence and merging of mind and spirit will gravitated to a remarkable condition thus producing a magnificent difference in the student(s) life. Consequently, enabling them to enter into the frontiers of the Second Attention.
