3. Conker Tree Science Project
Following the spread of the Leaf Miner
Moth.
Huge infestations that causes major leaf
damage.
In 2010, members of the public were
asked to:
• Observe evidence of infestation and complete an
online form which could capture geo-data
• Place a leaf in a plastic wallet and identify insects
that emerged after two weeks - moths and
natural pest controllers

4. The 2010 Results
2700 people submitted results
Survey data included improbable results
Photographic evidence needed to help
verify the evidence of moth damage
How best to obtain, manage and verify
the data?

5. Tools for 2011
Mobile phone apps - we need to access
the camera. Titanium or PhoneGap?
Apps need to provide photo reference
of damage; take photos; tag with time
and latitude and longitude; push the
images to a repository
Web-based solution for those who want
to submit photos from a traditional
camera
6. Verification Tools
Look at approaches to crowd source
verification of photos. Game based?
‘Hot or not’!
Visualisation tools - website to help
illustrate the spread of the moth. Can
be linked into the verification process.
