QUARTER 3- MATH IV- WEEK 3
For the last two weeks you have been dealing with percentage,
base and rate. For this week you are going to learn polygons.
Polygons are shapes, and they are part of our daily living. From
our tables, chairs and even plates. So it is important to know how to
describe them, tell their names and how to differentiate one polygon
from another.
You alreadyencountered the three sided polygonscalled triangles
and four sided polygons called quadrilaterals in grade 4.
1. Polygons – a closed plane figure made up of several line segments
joined together
polygon
2. Sides – name of the lines segments composing the polygon, we
can name the sides with letters.
3. Vertex- the common point where in the sides meet.

Learning Competency: visualizes, names, describes and
compares polygons with 5 or more sides.

A. NAMING A POLYGON , ITS SIDES AND VERTICES
⮚ The capital letters assigned in each vertex
are used to name the sides of the polygon,
angles of the polygon and the polygon itself.
⮚ This is polygon LMNOPQ – we name the
polygon by identifying all its vertices in
consecutive order. ( we can also say it is polygon MNOPQL as
long as the vertices are arranged consecutively)
____ ____ ___ ___ ___ ___
⮚ There are 6 line segment namely LM, MN, NO,OP, PQ and QL.
⮚ There are six angles namely : ∠L, ∠M, ∠N, ∠O, ∠P, ∠Q, ∠L .
Study the image below for more example.

B. Classification of Polygons according to number of sides
One way to compare and classify polygons is according to
their numbers of sides. Study the table below:
Number of sides Name of the Polygon
3 Triangle
4 Quadrilateral
5 Pentagon (penta means 5)
6 Hexagon (hexa means 6)
7 Heptagon (hepta means 7)
8 Octagon (octa means 8)
9 Nonagon (nona means 9)
10 Decagon ( deca means 10)
N n- gon
C. Classifying polygons according to their diagonals.
Diagonals – a line segment whose endpoints are 2 non-
consecutive vertices of the polygon.
diagonal Line segment(consecutive vertex)
Line segment
Diagonal
1. Convex polygon - a polygon that is the boundary of a convex
set. This means that the line segment between two points of the
polygon is contained in the union of the interior and the
boundary of the polygon. Meaning when I try to connect its
different vertex the diagonals are inside the polygon.
All diagonals
are inside the
pentagon

2. Non- convex Polygon or concave
A polygon that has, an angle with a measure that is between 180
degrees and 360 degrees.
A polygon that has a diagonal outside the polygon
⮚ A polygon is a closed plain figure.
⮚ The sides of a polygon is called line segment.
⮚ The point where 2 line segment meets is called vertex.
⮚ We name a polygonby identifying all the vertices in consecutive order.
⮚ Convex have diagonals inside the polygon.
⮚ Non- convex or concave polygons have diagonals outside the polygon.
If I will connect V
and T to have a
diagonal it will be
outside the
polygon.
