Culturally relevant pedagogy:
Focus is leadership, character and
culture of innovation.
This culture of innovation includes
connecting real world events,
challenges and opportunities to the
curricula across high school
disciplines and grades.
Students organize for worldly
challenges by assuming project roles
and responsibilities and by using
industry standard tools, systems
and processes when possible
Technology, science, and math
courses cross the language divide by
employing universal concepts and
theories.
Active classroom learning allows all
students, regardless of English
language skill, to apply knowledge
and demonstrate higher-level
thinking skills
15. Clark Magnet High School
Promoting Creativity:
Students participate in many competitions, but the art
of the school is the internalization of technology-based
competitions, careers, and projects across
curricula and grades.
The school does not have the latest equipment for
every project, but that does not stop Clark from
building, creating, constructing, simulating and
designing new worlds of possibility.
16. Clark Magnet High School
Teacher Creativity in the Classroom:
Teachers see themselves as facilitators, not instructors: direct
instruction, student presentations, student collaborative
work, and class discussions.
In one Tech Lit class, students downloaded images from CDs,
the Internet, or digital cameras to illustrate vocabulary words,
consulting with a peer or the teacher when necessary.
In a small-business class, students learned how a laser
engraver works, then wrote business plans and worked in
teams on production, marketing, accounting, website
development, and sales for an imaginary business.
In another Tech Lit class, after doing research on a topic of
interest on the Internet, students created newspaper articles
with columns and pictures.

19. 21st Century Skills
The Toledo School for the Arts (TSA) school community believes that
parents, teachers, administrators, and students are partners in the
educational process. The school and home must form an alliance to
provide quality educational programs for youth. A quality educational
program works in partnership with families and community and ensures
that students gain optimal academic experiences to prepare them for post
secondary pursuits.
TSA responds to 21st century learning challenges by understanding that
the resources that a school can use can deeply impact student
achievement.
Shared space, human resources, materials and supplies provided by
organizations helps TSA’s arts environment to model the professional
world.

24. Summary
“The role of a creative leader is not to have all the ideas; it’s to create a
culture where everyone can have ideas and feel that they’re valued.”
–Ken Robinson
Cultural relevance is the way of the future and the best practice in
the classroom. Educators should aspire and thrive to reaching, build
connections and relationships with each student. Integrating a student’s
cultural background into the classroom environment will allow students
to be accepted as a part of the classroom community. Students require an
environment where they feel valued and that they matter to someone.
Rita Pierson says it best, “Every child needs a champion.” The developers
of the Hayward Unified School District, Clark Magnet High School, and
Toledo School of Arts have their own distinctive way of integrating
cultural relevance into the classroom community that allows inspiration
and creativity to permeate each student.
