and division to model and solve problems using
units of 6 and 7.
Multiply by 7 (7 minutes)
7 x 5 =
Let’s skip count by sevens to find the answer. I will raise a finger
for each seven.
7 x 3 =
Let’s skip count up by sevens again.
Let’s see how we can skip-count down to find the answer too. Start
at 35 with 5 fingers, 1 for each seven.
Repeat the process for 7 x 4
Multiply by 7 (7 minutes)
Let’s practice multiplying by 7. Be sure to work
left to right across the page

Continue with the following suggested sequence: 8 x 6, 7 x 6, 9 x 6
Concept Development
(10 minutes)
Thad sees 7 beetles when he weeds his garden. Each
beetle has 6 legs. How many legs are there on all 7
beetles?
Talk to a partner, what kind of picture can we draw to
model this problem?
Draw and label a tape diagram to model this problem.
Use the letter b, for the beetles’ legs, to represent the
unknown.
What does the letter on your tape diagram represent?
Next to your tape diagram, write an equation for the problem and
solve it.
Talk to a partner, what strategy did you use to find b?
Write a sentence to answer the problem and then read your
sentence to a partner.
Repeat the process with 48 ÷ 6

  • 1. Multiplication and Division Using Units of 6 and 7 Module 3: Lesson 7 Objective: Interpret the unknown in multiplication and division to model and solve problems using units of 6 and 7.
  • 2. Multiply by 7 (7 minutes) 7 x 5 = Let’s skip count by sevens to find the answer. I will raise a finger for each seven. 7 x 3 = Let’s skip count up by sevens again. Let’s see how we can skip-count down to find the answer too. Start at 35 with 5 fingers, 1 for each seven. Repeat the process for 7 x 4
  • 3. Multiply by 7 (7 minutes) Let’s practice multiplying by 7. Be sure to work left to right across the page
  • 4. Group Counting (4 minutes) Sixes to 60 Eights to 80 Nines to 90
  • 5. Decompose the Multiplication Sentence (4 minutes) 6 x 6 = (5 + ) x 6 Complete this equation ( x 6) + ( x 6) Complete this equation Write an addition equation. Below it write your answer. Continue with the following suggested sequence: 8 x 6, 7 x 6, 9 x 6
  • 6. Concept Development (10 minutes) Thad sees 7 beetles when he weeds his garden. Each beetle has 6 legs. How many legs are there on all 7 beetles? Talk to a partner, what kind of picture can we draw to model this problem? Draw and label a tape diagram to model this problem. Use the letter b, for the beetles’ legs, to represent the unknown.
  • 7. What does the letter on your tape diagram represent? Next to your tape diagram, write an equation for the problem and solve it. Talk to a partner, what strategy did you use to find b? Write a sentence to answer the problem and then read your sentence to a partner. Repeat the process with 48 ÷ 6
  • 8. Application Problem (25 minutes) During this time, students work together in groups to complete the second page of the Problem Set.
