4. Geo-Textile :
As we know, the prefix of Geo-textile, Geo means earth and
the ‘textile’ means fabric. Therefore, according to the
definition of ASTM 4439, the geo-textile is defined as follows
A permeable geo-synthetic included only of textiles. Geo-
textile is used with foundation, soil, rocks, earth and any other
geo technical engineering related material as an integral part
of human-made project, structure, or system.

5. Geo-Textile :
The ASAE (Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food, and
Biological Systems) defines a geo-textile as a "fabric or
synthetic material placed between the soil and a pipe, gabion,
or retaining wall to enhance water movement and retard soil
movement, and as a blanket to add reinforcement and
separation.”

6. Types of Geo-textile :
According to period of use :
• First generation : These were the geo-textile which were
manufactured for carpet or industrial sacking.
• Second generation : These were the geo-textile which were
manufactured for certain technical purpose but without
adopting any modern techniques.
• Third generation : These are the actual geo-textile designed
and produced to meet certain end use.
Venue: NUB, Date : November 17, 2016
7. Major application of geo-textile :
• Reinforcement,
• Separation,
• Drainage,
• Filtration,
• Erosion control,
• Permanent roads,
• Railroad stabilization,
• Landfill gas collection.

8. Modern geo-textile :
Modern geo-textiles are usually made from synthetic polymers-
polypropylenes, polyesters, polyethylene, and polyamides which do
not decay under biological and chemical processes. This makes
them useful in road construction and maintenance .

9. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Reinforcement : Due to their high soil fabric friction co-
efficient and high tensile strength, heavy grades of geo-
textiles are used to reinforce earth structures allowing the use
of local fill material .

10. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Drainage : Drainage and filtration layers are used in civil applications to
remove moisture or fine particles from the system. Geo-synthetics provide a
widely accepted, effective and economic alternative to traditional aggregate &
sand filtration layers. Geo-synthetic materials are manufactured using a heat-
bonded process to create consistent filtration characteristics utilized in a
variety of markets, be it industrial filters, geo-composites, or underground
drainage layers.

11. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
COASTAL EMBANKMENT : The coastal embankment which is eroded by
scouring due to wave action, current velocity and also damage by excess
wheel load of the loaded vehicles. These affected embankments can be
protected by using Geo-textile, Geo-tube and placement geo-bag. We offer
different techniques for protecting the unsuitable soil of coastal embankment.

12. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Protection : Erosion of earth embankments by wave action,
currents and repeated drawdown is a constant problem requiring
the use of non-erodable protection in the form of rock beaching or
mattress structures. Beneath these is placed a layer of geo-textile to
prevent bleaching of fine material. The geo-textile is easily placed,
even under water.

13. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Railroad stabilization : The present paper discusses about the importance
of using geo-textile in Railways. Geo-textiles are used for stabilization and load
bearing capacity improvement of sub grade below the railway tracks use of
geo-textile may increase cost of railway tracks, however the maintains cost
may reduce by giving the railway tracks long life time.

14. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
PROTECTION WORK OF THE EMBANKMENT OF POWER PLANT : The
embankment near the power plant should be stable enough to withstand the
pressure come from the movement of heavy water vehicle. The embankment
is also eroded by scouring due to flood, rainfall and current velocity. These
affected embankments can be protected by using Geo-textile. We offer
different techniques for protecting the unsuitable soil of the embankment.

15. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Erosion control : Geo-textiles have a long and distinguished record of use in erosion
control applications. Geo-textiles have been utilized unde r riprap and behind and
around bulkheads for decades. One of the earliest documented causes utilizing a geo-
textile for erosion control took place in 1958. Most governmental agencies have geo-
textile specifications developed for permanent erosion control. The AASHTO M-288
specification offers two classes of woven and nonwoven geo-textiles for permanent
erosion control.

16. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Permanent roads : Low-cost pavement is protected from
premature degradation and frequent maintenance by including an
appropriate geo-textile as a separator between the sub grade and
the pavement structure. The strength properties required to survive
construction and provide long-term separation are described.

17. Application of modern geo-textile in
Bangladesh :
Landfill gas collection : Maintaining a conduit for gases to
escape from landfills can be challenging . Heavy weight
nonwoven geo-textiles help collect and transport gases that
can build up beneath the flexible geo-membranes used in the
closure of solid waste facilities.
