Notes de l'éditeur
Hello, I’m glad to present you a topical issue about water.
I found that this topic is a relevant question for our future and I want to share some data about il with you.
I choose to deal with this issue from the perspective of access to water
On 28 July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation.
On September 25th of the last year, the UN adopted 17 goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.
For the goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and people like you and me.
6th goal is “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all”
Let’s have a look onto the seventeen goals for a sustainable development
Do you know that a world water day exist ?
It is on the 22th of march, every year. We have just passed it 2 weeks ago
It means to emphasise on water issues, and to call for action organisations and peoples around the world
the focus was made this year on water and jobs
The United Nations note that 1 out of 2 workers are active in water-related economic sector
I have chosen to emphasise on 3 facts about access to water among those that were communicated on the WWD 2O16. Let’s review them :
Almost 2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water
Women and children spend something like 6 hours per day collecting fresh water
The World Economic Forum in January 2015 ranked the water crisis as the No. 1 global risk based on impact to society
The question about water is simple : for the next few decades, will it be possible to provide enough water to a population forecast to be at least 9 billion by 2050 using a volume which will be roughly the same as it is now?
This card shows freshwater availability, expressed as cubic metres per person and per year in 2007. In brown are shown regions with lower availability, I mean under 2 500 cubic metres per person per year.
It is obvious that a big part of the world is in situation ranging from vulnerability to scarcity
In the context of stress and scarcity, the challenge will be to find creative ways to manage water resources without emphasizing already existing disputes and conflicts
Studies shows that there is 2 main reasons of conflicts in the world :
The first on is changes in the volume of water flows
The second one is the creation of new infrastructure, which is at its turn can have consequences on volume of water flow.
And the other hand, history shows that most disputes are resolved paecefully. Good new isn’t it ?
Maybe, the fact that the UN have decided to upgrade acces to water as a human right and as one of the seventeen goals for sustainable devoppment will change this data.
Maybe change will balance toward more negociation and further cooperation about water issues, especially in cities, rural area and among countries lacking water and those having.
Ok, Im at the end of this presentation.
Hope you enjoyed it !
Here are some references on internet that I have used.
Thank you for welcoming this topical issue presentation about water.
I am glad to open now the debate session. Could I ask you what you think about water management in France ? Do you know how water is managed ? do you hear about different kind of water and their use ?
Do you believe it is possible that 1 of 2 workers in the world is in a field related with water ? How is it possible ?
I would be glad to have your opinion
