What is the Point?
At the end of this lesson...

You will know what these two characters
    have in common...
Hand-Out

    Title your booklet

What is the Point?
Chameleon is Hungry

Sam knows that the fly is at point (4, 3). What should he do?
Move right on x-Axis
Move up on y-axis
Graphs of Functions

Today we will learn how to ...

plot ordered pairs from a function table and
    draw the corresponding line...
Let's look at this real-lilfe
    problem
    
Anan is buying T-shirts for Spirit Day. Each
package of t-shirts has two shirts in it. He
wants to know how many t-shirts are in 5
        packages.

Packages of T-Shirts
Y = 2x of
Number Number of T-
Packages (x)
1 Shirts (y)
                    2
2 4
3 6
Our table also follows an order
  Packages of T-Shirts
  Y = 2x
Number of Packages (x) Number of T-Shirts (y)

  1 2

  2 4

  3 6

       Remember: (x,y) ??
Write the function table as
                    ordered pairs
Packages of T-Shirts
Y = 2x
Number of Packages (x) Number of T-Shirts (y)

1 2

2 4

3 6

                         Example: (1, 2)
Let's draw the prefect grid
Number of T-shirts

                     Number of packages
You try

Samuel wants to celebrate his birthday. He
wants top hang up 12 balloons. Party
Warehouse has packages with 4 balloons
each. How many packages does he need?
1. Create a function table
2. Number x-axis 0-5: y-axis 0-17
3. Draw the perfect grid
3. plot the ordered pairs on the coordinate
  grid
4. connect the points
Work in pairs, 10 minutes
What happens...

When I extend the line. What does the
    graph tell me?

    How about: This function
y=2
X=6
Warm-up
• Take out your Math booklet, ruler, pencil, notebook (and graph
paper – if you have nto used it yet)

• Work with your partner to finish yesterdays asssignment

• You are finished? Take a graphiti and work on it (it goes in the
  Math part of your binder)

You have 10 minutes
After this, we will talk about the assignment for about 5
  minutes
                                             Chime
Be prepared to explain your thinking •Voices silent
                                             •Pencil down
                                             •Eyes on listener
Vocabulary Review
What is the x-axis?
What is the y-axis?
What is the Origin?
What is an ordered pair?
What do ordered pairs need?
We will learn how to graph
                      equations...

An equation is a rule for a function

You can use equations to make a function table

    Rule: y = 2x + 1
    x y When x = 1
    1 Y=2*1+1
    2 Y+2+1=3
    3


Use the function table to write ordered pairs

Use # 5 of your whiteboard – do not erase
We will learn how to graph
               equations...

Place the ordered pairs on a coordinate grid

             y
                 10
                  8
                 6
                 4
                 2

                      2 4

Draw a line through the points x

What can you predict for x = 4
15-20 min.
                   You try
Use your notebook (graph paper on counter) and
  work with your partner

Make sure you glue the graph paper in your
  notebook before you leave

Draw a function table (When x=1, y=…), then
  graph your equation

  Y = 2x -1

  Y = 6x – 2

  Challenge: y = 3

  Super challenge: y = 2x and Z = y+5 / draw
both function tables, then graph both equations
